Question: I'm currently going to use the iron fist spec, but i took out the 2 points in quell and add them to retractable blade and oil slick. My question is, is it good or bad?

Also, I mainly pvp while i lvl through planets. Can i stack Power > defense > absorbation or should i stack other stats (which stats will make me a good off-tank for FP/ heroics)

RB has a solid damage-to-mana ratio. Since 1.1.5 went live, I've gone back and forth as to whether it's worth using. Oil Slick is a solid debuff against the right targets that use a lot of Melee or Ranged attacks.

Read that first, ask questions after.

Just wanted to ask Tau' are you still running with the Iron Fist spec, now that you have dropped Gut/Retractable Blade?

I've been playing various specs over the past month, ranging from various Pyrotech to Carolina Parakeet to Iron Fist.

About a month ago I got my 4-pc Champion Eliminator, and I have now upgraded to 4-pc BM Eliminator. I'm in the process of grinding out my 4-pc BM Combat Tech as well.

I'm hoping to have the full 5/5 BM Eliminator and Combat Tech by 1.2, so I can run various specs and have the pieces for trade-in to War Hero. It's unfortunate that we have to have the BM piece to trade-in for War Hero, but it is what it is.

I'm not going to grind out 5/5 BM SC but it is a solid set for PVP tanking.

I was under the impression that you could simply buy the BM pieces that you were missing (provided you have the appropriate valor rank) when 1.2 rolls around?

Is that not how it works?

I've had terrible luck on tokens in my bags, so I've just been trying to raise my alts to BM because I thought this was the case. Anyone know?

Not only that, but I replaced the terrible BM mods w/ the (better) Champ mods, so when 1.2 rolls around, all of my BM gear is going to be sub-par (mods that you have removed from your BM gear will NOT update to the new 1.2 expertise mods.. if you still have the accuracy mods you replaced, you can put them back into your BM gear and they will update to the new expertise mods for 1.2).

I think most of us will be buying new sets of BM gear anyway.

(Also, that sniper of yours is mean...)

BM gear requires no valor rank post 1.2. BM pieces are bought with regular WZ commendations after 1.2 also. BM commendations become useless when 1.2 hits.

They are still used to purchase some type of crafting component. I haven't read much in to what those things are for though.

Ah, thanks guys. I'll need to read up on it a bit more carefully before 1.2 hits. I guess I should get back to farming BM bags for 0 tokens till then.

Well at least switch from WSAD to EDSF, your left hand has better reach there to more keyboard real estate.

I can't believe I hadn't thought of that. 2-3 more keys with my pinkie, and another column within reach of my index finger. Z, X, and C are already remapped.

Taugrim, if you happen to still be dabbling in SWTOR PvP, I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we'd love to see your guide updated.

If not, cya next game! =)

Give me some time. I'm still working through different specs.

There has been a bug reported that one of the ticks for Plasma Cell (Combustible Gas Cylinder) is missing:

Is this why you haven't been killing me on your sniper anymore? : )

The first tick is the one missing, huh? That's.. the most important one. :c

more like to busy being a part of the spoiled brat wow crowd complaining about the game

Heh, because we all know that 1.2 was absolutely perfect in every way. Right.

1st pass update to the Guide for 1.2 has been done:

http://taugrim.com/2012/01/04/guide-to-bounty-hunter-powertech-trooper-vanguard-mechanics-and-pvp/

Let me know if I missed anything.

Taugrim, thanks for your guide, I've learned a lot when I first started PvPing. However, I think you might have missed something:

"Grapple (Harpoon) which has a 45 sec cooldown, 35 sec with Advanced Tools (Tactical Tools). You can add a 3-sec root effect with the tanking tree talent No Escape (Defensive Measures). Keep in mind the root effect builds Resolve"

I don't think the root builds resolve, grapple/harpoon builds resolve regardless if it is talented or not. This is why you can't grapple people with full resolve even when you don't have no escape. Also, I'm fairly certain other roots/snares don't build resolve as well.

Also, since Ion Gas Cylinder is broken right now (not doing the damage that it should be), you might want to consider taking the point out of Supercharged Ion Gas and putting it into oil slick. Just my two cents.

But as always, great guide!

Woops, thanks for that catch. The pull builds 400 Resolve. The root effect, like all roots and snares, does not build Resolve.

IIRC you can't pull a white-barred (Resolve immune) opponent, but you can still root them with the pull.

Added links to 31/10/0 tank spec:

- Powertech: http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#301GRGb0RroGRZMcRM.1

- Vanguard: http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#801GRGb0RroGRZMcRM.1

Patch 1.2 Tank: 31/10/0 provides charge, Guard, solid melee capability, and excellent durability via passive mitigation. Limited ranged capability. In 1.2, Heat Blast (Energy Blast) was removed from the GCD. Empowered Tech (Counterattack) increases the chance to proc Shield Vents (Shield Cycler) and Flame Shield (Static Shield) to improve DPS

Just wondering if Iron Fist is still viable?

Also interested in this. I have still been using the Ironfist spec and cannot tell if my decrease in performance is due to not having full war hero like everyone else, or something being changed with the specs effectiveness. Thanks!

Ironfist will still be viable until 1.3 lands. The nerf to your bread and butter rocket punch is not counteracted by the free flame sweep you would pick up. So you could be better off going further up a different tree.

Here is my free in-depth Guide to Powertech Mechanics and PVP:

http://taugrim.com/2012/01/04/guide-to-bounty-hunter-powertech-trooper-vanguard-mechanics-and-pvp/

Let me know your feedback / questions, either here or on my blog.

I'll be updating it multiple times a week on my blog, and I'll be posting significant content changes here.

Look forward to dialoguing with you!

Is this thread even viable to the community anymore? I'm assuming the OP no longer plays SWTOR, therefore would not be updating his blog with any pertinent information. If that is the case I feel this thread should be "unstuck".

Indeed. Alas, the great Iron Fist has joined the Carolina Parakeet in extinction.

:(

Indeed.

Given the current mechanics, I recommend running Pyrotech (Assault Specialist) or Advanced Prototype (Tactics). If you are set on tanking, you can run a 31-pt spec but understand that your damage output is going to be limited.
