I like the OP's original idea.

 

My wild speculation...given that you can already invite other players onto your ship, why not extend that so that the other player passengers can "man the guns" as in the Return trailer video where Satile (spelling!) and the trooper guy man the guns on the Smuggler's ship.

 

Be like IL2 Sturmovik in space :p

Whatever it is, I can't wait...

 

But my momey's on 3D multiplayer space zones/exploration, more customization, and more ships available for purchse (and possibly even crafting).

 

 

I can't decide if you're betting your mother or your mulah? :D

I think we will get an additional space mission.

Plus the possibility to name our ship.

Plus the ability to display the name of our ship during the mission.

I dunno how they can include Guild ship PvP without a completely new space game though.

I hope they finally put bathrooms on the ships. I know, I know...I keep saying this, but c'mon...having to pull over at a spacestation every couple parsecs or *gasp* use an empty gatorade bottle during a long space flight is completely ridiculous. I mean, my toon and her crew have sleeping quarters but nowhere to potty. As it is, people are already complaining about how long it takes to travel from planet to planet...well, if we didn't have to make pit stops all along the way, then it should help with that. Any PVP, or even multiplayer, will involve a new space game.

 

I could see a system where the current rail shooter 'space missions' are still available (after all, some people really like it as is), while also having zones that are for free flight and multiple players. Ideally, in my mind that is, there would be PVE zones as well as 'hostile space' PVP zones.

No reason they could not impliment a full Tie Fighter like space game with multiple players.

 

Fighters for starting off ships, guilds could possibly eventually gain capital ships. Smugglers could.....smuggle.....

 

They got the graphics nailed at least, some of the space battles are gorgeous. Would be pretty damn simple really. They did it masterfully on some floppy disks 15 years ago or so.

Ideally, in my mind that is, there would be PVE zones as well as 'hostile space' PVP zones.

 

You can do multiplayer rails -- each player starts on a different rail, if you follow me. It would not be hard to have multiple craft swooping around each other within the current rail system. After all, the enemy ships already do.

 

You can do PVP on rails, where there'd be two foci -- shooting enemy ships when the opportunity came around, and competing to win a mission. For example, the republic players are trying to shoot down NPC-controlled Imperial ships, while the Imperial players are trying to inflict enough damage on an NPC Republic cruiser to destroy it. The two sides, each with ships on rails, are constantly swooping past each other, and learning the moments of intersect when you'll be able to target PC ships will be a part of mastering that aspect of it.

 

These would be much easier to build onto the current engine than a free-flight system.

No offense, those ideas seem possible, but I really hope that's not what they're planning. As stated above, something more like JTL with SWTOR's graphics would be amazing.

I'm hoping so, been crying after space combat since Freelancer.

 

Freelancer, ah the great game following a great franchise. Wing Commander 1 was my first Space Sim love, Freelancer my last great one. There have been okay Space Games since, but that franchise. Memories.

My hope - rather my speculation- is on free roaming space missions where a 4 member party can man stations at different points of the ship, perhaps one person piloting, another manages shields and torpedo while the other two get on the turrets.

 

Mission structure would be pve: escort, getting from point A to point B or taking down capital ships and stuff. But i guess there would be room for group vs group pvp.

 

To throw some rpg elements in there experience gained from these missions can be used to level up bonuses in things like ship handling, lock on time, shield strength etc.

 

but like i said: that's mostly just a pipe dream of mine.

Has anyone here ever palyed Vendetta Online? They had these incredible PVP scenarios where scheduled convoys of supplies would occasionally travel through hostile space.

 

One faction would have to escort and protect their convoy while the other group tried to destroy it. It was a ton of fun.

I'd like to be able to board and raid other player's ships, have my companions face off theirs and start my own piracy ring.

 

I'd also like space pvp, or even dailies that gave me commendations and made space combat relevant again, post-50.

 

But at the bare minimum, I'd settle for some multiplayer space action. On that note, they could also look at creating flashpoints that were space-dependent (i.e. some bosses and trash to be cleared in-space on multiplayer-rails), then you board your way onto the remainder of the content and fight your way on foot.

 

It wouldn't be hard to take the rail shooter and up the ante a bit.

They cant just "take out the rails". The space combat isnt actually in a space environment with auto pilot on. Its just a scripted mini game with a visual representation.

Unless you are on the dev team incognito you cannot know that, and actually it seems unlikely.

 

It seems more likely they have been working on a star wars (as opposed to Newtonian) spaceflight simulator and realized fairly early it would not be ready as soon as the rest, which gave them time to build the rail system as a minimalist place holder until the simulator could be done right.

This may sound like anti-hyperbole (word may not exist) but I honestly think they will allow you to change the color of your space ship... in about 6 months.

 

jokes aside I think if they are thinking about expanding the space game they will need to add a reason to do it after hitting 50. Currently all space is good for is money and xp. None of the 50's I know have done any space missions since they hit 50. So they will probably add some sort of "token" for endgame content. No other big changes are likely coming since it would require a major redesign of the architecture.

 

But it's well within the engine for Bioware to create three separate architectures and systems. There could be a system for the current space missions, a separate one for PVP space missions, and then one for open exploration. The Galaxy map sort of creates a basic architecture for that type of system with 5 designed regions and instanced areas within each region.

 

So in essence, they could create different scenarios for people to enjoy space.

pure speculation.

 

anything short of a freelancer style and size will be a waste of money and i mean that, if they add that then say hello to a returning subscription.

 

the on rails shooter isn't fun isn't noval or interesting, would have been interesting in 1985 but not now not today and not 10 years ago.

 

open space flight free travel and navigation to multiple hyperspace points, free flight combat for pve and pvp, don't mind things like cap ships for guilds as they did hint at that as well...or was that some show i was watching that speculated that...can't remember now.

 

more worlds off the trail of the story, moons and asteroid belts to mine or build on.

 

random encounters dynamic events in space seeing as they didn't add them to ground based combat they may as well add it to the space side of the game.

 

lots of modifcations to ships...i mean lots, i want to make a bucket of bolts out of my ship and a mish mash of systems that no one would ever recognise what it was originally never mind how to fix it without a wookie.

I highly doubt they are gong to release a free flight system. Unless this is what they are intending to release, they are going to disappoint many people in a big way when this dosn't turn out to be the case.

 

The only time I would see a free flight system making it into game was with a paid for and boxed expansions. I would be OK with that, I enjoy the current space system for what it is.

 

My personal opinion is that they will introduce space content that is completed in groups. You and your group mates each select a roll (Fighter/Wingman/Bomber etc...) and this places you each on a certain "rail" within the same space area. This content may even be required to access/progress in other first person content on the ground. Just a guess.
