  1. says who? you or the science community? again...we currently can not create them.....does that say anywhere that one day we will not be able too? 30 years ago cold fusion was a pipe dream yet now we know that under the right circumstances and with the right materials it is possible, not easily done and not at a level that could sustain anything but possible none the less. scientifict breakthroughs happen all the time, we are constantly rewriting the rule books as we learn more and find new ways to do what could not be done before as well. we understand so little it makes me laugh when people say it's not possible, it just reminds me just how stupid the human race actually is.
  2. how are lasers not possible in that fashion? what branch of physics do you cover? laser physics? i can tell you right now that for 300 quid you could pick up a nitrogen laser and simulate those effects that would also be pretty darn damaging as well considering they are used to punch holes through steel girders. just because our current understanding of laser physics means we can not create them with the same degree of power does not mean it is not possible. also with regards to not possible, i bring you a deployed laser by the military, deuterium fluoride laser, currently being deployed in small forms at military sites as missle defence systems and anti aircraft defence. they may once have been a thing of science fiction but i seriously suggest you get your head out of your *** as they are not science fiction anymore and haven't been for some time. how about an argon mining laser, as another example, small enough to fit on the side of a small vehicle and utterly devastating at HEL levels that are used for weaponisation and mining. your grasp of modern laser physics is worse than my grasp of quantum physics.
  3. good job for bioware. now add more depth to space gameplay and the rest will come back.
  4. actually thats just our understanding of physics and light that is stopping that from happening nothing to do with newtons laws... on topic, physics and newtons law is bound by the constraints of the gravity and can be easily affected by other forces...ie applying the brakes. that said a plane in free fall will at some point reach a point where there is no gravity, nasa do this to do certain tests inside our own atmosphere. completely blows newtons law out the water by manipulation of other forces. but ye jumping onto an elevator 1 foot below you should not cause 4k damage...maybe a twisted ankle, or a broken leg if your carrying that much junk in your bags. i hate to see it but those speeders are rather heavy and we run around all day with them hiding in a bag....gotta love applying real physics to a game.
  5. pure speculation. anything short of a freelancer style and size will be a waste of money and i mean that, if they add that then say hello to a returning subscription. the on rails shooter isn't fun isn't noval or interesting, would have been interesting in 1985 but not now not today and not 10 years ago. open space flight free travel and navigation to multiple hyperspace points, free flight combat for pve and pvp, don't mind things like cap ships for guilds as they did hint at that as well...or was that some show i was watching that speculated that...can't remember now. more worlds off the trail of the story, moons and asteroid belts to mine or build on. random encounters dynamic events in space seeing as they didn't add them to ground based combat they may as well add it to the space side of the game. lots of modifcations to ships...i mean lots, i want to make a bucket of bolts out of my ship and a mish mash of systems that no one would ever recognise what it was originally never mind how to fix it without a wookie.
  6. it's ok buddy the budget for rift is common knowledge to those that can use google you don't need to defend that figure. swtor used a colossal sum of money for the voice overs probably alot more than they should have as well by the sounds of things. i'd be interested to know just how much was spent on the game compared to what was spent on voice overs...call me silly but i think they may have spent to much on vo's and not spent enough on the game.
  7. i'm in a similar situation to yourself yet i realised i'm not burnt out from the potential the genre has or gaming, i'm burnt out from seeing the same games do the same things that has been done before. when i play fps games like mw3 or bf3 i see the same games with some differences, yet the entire time i play them i'm looking for a switch or a blue key like i would find in doom. when i played starcraft after several years of playing supreme commander..i tried to zoom out found i couldn't and said ''crap game'' just because of that, nothing wrong with starcraft but i like to be able to zoom out more than it lets me and coming from supreme commander i found it lacking in many ways, i have 3 monitors which sup comd can use 2 of for the game maybe thats another reason. what i want i suppose isn't asking much when you consider what has come before, when i think back about final fantasy 7 and how long i played it i wonder why no one has ever thought to take the best parts of that game and do create another game with the best elements of it. i can't understand why so many games come out that have these amazing graphics and yet when it comes to gameplay can't compete with games that came out 15 years ago, it strikes me as very odd. the mmo genre is no different, games have done the same as what swtor is offering but they did it years ago, the genre isn't failing but the developers are letting the gamers down by producing the same things just in a different game engine with different graphics. what i want to see from an mmo is a fully open world game set in the star wars universe with free flight space ala freelancer and ground combat as is with more freedom to become an actual smuggler doing spice runs from kessel or something, i don't see swtor doing that which is one reason i'm disapointed. i want tab target combat removed already it's been done to death and other company's are looking at ways to make combat more dynamic i want dynamic events....come on now we all knew thats where the genre was heading, so rift added it and gw2 will be using it as will no doubt many new games to come yet swtor happily dropped the idea during a meeting around a model deathstar then carried on as if players weren't going to ask where it was. what players are after is actual evolution of the genre, swtor hasn't done that which is why some feel like they can't connect with this game. gah long post sorry.
  8. is it a success? thats a difficult question to answer after 1 month. i wish i could say how many will actually play this game but i know for a fact there a great many players that are waiting on the sidelines as they do for every game launch for it to stabalise and get the bugs ironed out before buying and playing it. for some that could take 3-6 months for others up to a year. what that means lady's and gents that we will not know the outcome of such a question for at least a year and even that depends greatly on bioware and how quickly they resolve certain elements of the game and add in the right content.
  9. of course they had more grind, but the thing is...it didn't feel like a grind to do it. why? because they had a community to chat with that actually responded while they were doing it. amoung many many other reasons that just wouldn't fit in this box of text. games didn't rely on flashy gimics before, where as now it seems like the company's don't think they would last a week without them. the industry is in for an almighty shock when it comes back to bite them in the ***, and the cost and development time invested in mmo's means they can not afford to make those mistakes yet they keep making the same mistakes. bioware should not have copied other game ideas they should not have looked at any so called models for what makes a successfull mmo, as frankly players are driven by the evolving market not by what was out before. weve seen it before...we don't want to see it again move on and create something better.
  10. couldn't agree more, all the flash and bang seems to be in the graphics these days as well rather than in the gameplay.
  11. i enjoyed the game but for me it was missing some parts, no i don't mean lfd or stuff like that i mean full on space combat and more depth to that side of the game. it should be there and frankly i just don't want to play another ground based mmo, using the star wars ip should have been a big *********** clue to add proper space combat and better use of space craft. but that is my only real gripe about this game, bioware did say they were expanding on it and thats good enough for me, but i'll remain unsubbed untill such a time as they expand it properly. ground based mmo's are fine but i've seen them before and they are usually very similar to the extent you can predict how something will work and relate it to something from another game, thats not really a problem but for me it gets rather boring. i've been playing games for close to 25 years so i'd say i've seen a fair whack of what has been done but that doesn't mean i don't want to see a fresher take on what has come before. i've mentioned previously that some games feel paper thin in regards to gameplay and swtor has depth but not enough, the gameplay is the same as other tab target based mmo games which is something that is probably going to change as players strive for more active ways to play and more direct emersion. i feel that given the sheer volume of possible content that they could have put in the game they left far to much out in favor of voice overs. all in all i enjoyed a great deal of the game i experience very few game breaking bugs..combat lag was probably the only one i found to be irritating but the lack of proper space orientated game in a star wars ip was a real let down. the way i look at the game right now is, a house with walls, missing the roof doors and windows with no floors inside or furniture, essentially a bare shell of a game given the possibilities they just didn't explore or implement. but hey ho thats the way it goes sometimes i hope they add in some of those things in time so i can come back, if not i'll be looking for games that don't use tab targeting...sooo bloody boring.
  12. considering this isn't a gear centric game i'm not shocked or concerned by how loot and items are handed out. wow is overly based on gear which is just as bad. gear shouldn't be hard to get and shouldn't require you to be the best in the world. IT'S A GAME!!!!!! sure gear plays a role in this game as it does in many others but it is not the sole focus of the game either, other games do centre character progression around gear and well ye it's not that much fun after a while. when i played wow i was a mage/paladin/deathknight all were geared in heroic t12 gear..they were my only 85's as i just couldn't stomach leveling another, gear was not hard to come by neither were the raids difficult but i was bored stiff of gear being the only method of character progression, things like path of the titans were suppose to augment that but were dropped in favor of yet more gear.... i treated gearing in wow with utter disdain i didn't care if my gear was better than someone elses all i cared about was having a laugh with my guildies and killing bosses in a timely manner before nerfs came. swtor doesn't follow that path of which i am eternally gratefull, gearing is a means to an end nothing more it shouldn't signify anything or lead to e-peen battles when trying to form groups.
  13. hmm i must be one of the few that doesn't want to play games through steam or any other client...i just want to play my sodden games. i remember picking up half life 2 while i was away somewhere, boy was i pissed off when i found i couldn't play it without going online. i'd rather all games made steam/origin or any other client like them optional to the point you can at least play your game without having to go online or register it through a steam client. i spend alot of time abroad so no i don't like steam or origin or games for windows crap they are all a massive pain in the ***.
  14. isn't that half the problem though? virtually every mmo is losing players and they aren't all going to wow which is losing subs by the hundreds of thousands every quarter. aion...losing players rift...losing players eve...pretty much the same. wow..losing players swtor...who knows but it lost a few of the initial players. take your pick most are losing players. so where are they all going? my guess is they are all just sick and tired of the status quo the tab target combat the raids the same pvp regardless of game the same quests the same proffesions with different names. they certainly aren't playing mmo's thats for sure. swtor was for many a place to look to for that change and many thought rightly or wrongly that it would be different probably hoped is a better word. at the end of it all everyone just wants a different approach and vastly different at that too but gamers have become fickle and the company's frankly aren't sure what to give us so they give is the same old same old spoon fed games weve had for the last 15 years and hope it will be good enough.
  15. ultimatly it depends on your budget. and then it depends on how quickly you want it. you could for arguments sake wait a few months for ivybridge and pick up one of those. a 6 core is utter overkill and i mean that in the truest sence, you would get no benifit from it at all in any game in existance, what it would allow is for you to be able to play your game and do other stuff but then a an i5/i7 can do that already. ram does make a difference and certainly a bigger one than is being said, however it will only make the difference when all components are at or around the same quality. also if your going for a new build now do you upgrade to pci-e 3.0 and the 7970 or do you not. essentially anything you buy now as an upgrade is old as it is just about to be replaced on the market. best bet is to spend as little as possible and see out the year untill windows 8 comes and ivbridge and the pci-e 3.0 cards are more common from both nvidia and ati and then do a bigger full system upgrade.
  16. ah but they have little to no effect unless the game was written to take advantage of the memory in the first place which they have never been. of which there are no games currently available which do take advantage of ddr 3 tripple channel memory configuratons or fully take advantage of the most common dual channel memory configurations. frankly unless you own a game that is using ddr3 tripple/quad channel ram at 2000mhz fully i'm calling you on it as there are none that you can buy and none even in the works right now. it's great that you have those features in your hardware but it will be years before we see any software that is a game actually use it while applications have been using it for some time, like 3ds photoshop and other high end rendering software does and has done for a while. frankly your an idiot for thinking games could even remotely use that kind of hardware and see a difference, marginal maybe but not on the scale the hardware actually works at. even the new pci-e 3 revision will take years to fully be taken advantage of by games designers and it will be longer still before it becomes a standard in a high enough percentage of computers to limit games to that revision as well, tripple channel memory and quad channel memory has it's uses but those uses are not in games, it will be a long time before a game comes along that has to use it to function well. right now your sat on hardware that is by all intents worthless to gaming unless you are a full time graphics designer or some other proffesion that has software that uses it you wasted your money. not only that but you bought the 39.. whatever just before ivybridge is due to come out...what a dolt.
  17. if you buy the base unreal engine then yes it is geared towards fps games, however devs are heavily modding it to suit their games needs, i doubt the creators of unreal engine would recognise some of the rewrites done to it for games like tera or some of the other upcoming mmo's that will use it. i'm no developer of any kind but i did do some research into the unreal engine when i heard that tera was going to use it, they rework they did to that engine is insane to the point they should have just created there own. simple fact is those modding the unreal engine to work in mmo's know far more about how to do it and how to make it work than any poster here whether you like it or not. edit: i cracked a wise comment about how poor the hero engine is in another post, and said that the use of an actually tested and finished game engine like the unreal engine would have served them better....i did not mean they should use the unreal engine, but the issues with the hero engine are it was not finished when taken up by bioware it was not ever put to use by anyone as it was still in development by it's creators, thats not to say it won't work but as it stands it is not doing what it is suppose to do and frankly is not good enough.
  18. they will tell you that your average earnings are higher and the pricing is based around that... it's not based on currency conversion rates...someone else that knows this point it out.
  19. the pricing isn't based on conversion rates. it's based on average wage in each country and assessed from there there is a far more in depth analysis done than what i can describe for you but it has nothing to do with currency conversion rates.
  20. not really true at all, the entire genre feels stale. when i look at other mmo's i see the same things the same combat the same games in effect it doesn't matter how much money was spent on them the games are almost identical to each other with lore and graphics being the prime differences. threads like this one are the ones the company's need to pay attention to and start reacting to sooner rather than later, it's not that the game is bad it's that weve seen it before we know what to expect and the gamers are not expecting that anymore. gamers are expecting something different and perhaps were asking for to much with that but as with everything times are changing and gamers are expecting more gameplay content, more dynamic events should be the norm, rift did get that right of all the things we say are bad about that game the dynamic zone wide events were amazing, sure they messed up some other aspects but at least they had that. swtor doesn't have dynamic events in zones or anywhere else that most new mmo's are going to be offering, no political system that most new mmos are going to be adding in, it could have had space combat on a grand scale instead we got space on rails...that was not a good move. what we got was an mmo reskinned to be like star wars, aside from the bugs there is far more missing from the game that makes the game feel dead.
  21. that does not mean they deserved an expansion....oh and it was one single solitary pandaran merc in warcraft 3 thats hardly a lore aspect worth exploring hence the general pissed off people over it.
  22. i left wow because i was bored of it and the incoming panda epidemic...sigh i came to swtor with expectations and was not really let down by it but i was disapointed at the lack of space combat or any space based game...don't even bother with that on rails guff. not going back to wow as frankly it's far to mind numbing and swtor isn't really getting me interested. for me i think they either better up their game by a lot or this will be the last mmo i ever look at, they are all just disapointing these days.
  23. the fact is even the creators of the hero engine didn't know how good it would end up being. you can for all intents create a game using the unreal 3 engine, you know what to expect as it is a finished game engine, tried and tested before being released to the market. can you spot the difference? bioware took up the hero engine rightly or wrongly in an unfinished state and had no idea whether it would even work as it had never been used before or properly tested as it was not finished to be tested in the first place. and you go on about poor reading skills? that goes both ways.
  24. what christmas money? everyone is skint or not spending it due to the worst global economic downturn in history. they should have released the game in a better state at any time simply due to the small fact they would have gotten more subs and more would have bought the game knowing it was in better shape, there will be countless people that want to play the game but are waiting a given period for these main issue's to be resolved before sinking time into this game. what is causing the issues is of greater concern though, performance from computers should be far far far higher this game is not good enough to tax high end systems yet somehow it is, thats dire optimisation which is suppose to be done before release. the other issues so many seem to have is a clear sign they were not ready, the launcher issues patching issues corrupt file issues and so on. the small fact the launcher is done by a 3rd party...i mean really? are they joking even with all their devs they couldn't do their own? that worries me. hero engine....was not finished when it was taken up by bioware, they had only a vague idea of how well it would actually work, granted probably a very educated idea but did they overestimate it's ability? it's certainly possible. blaaa i went on a tangent...just just sooo disapointed.
  25. skyrim...it took them 4 years to create the graphics and landscapes..shame they spent 3 weeks on gameplay possibly the most disapointing game from a gameplay standpoint i've ever played...games from 1980 had better gameplay and more depth..i seriously think some gamers today don't understand just how little games have improved in terms of gameplay this last 10 years. sure the graphics in games have improved but that just doesn't cut it. swtor is no exception, it does nothing that previous mmo's haven't done before...sure voice overs....but gameplay? you know that core element of any game, nothing new here. granted i knew swtor wasn't going to be any different i accepted that but i did expect more than just ground combat.
