Chat Bubbles: We need an option to enable them for say, yell and emote chat!

I don't know if it's been discussed, but I had a thought:

What if chat bubbles were only enabled within your party?

It would limit the stress on the game engine, as there wouldn't be as much on-screen activity. I think most RPers would vastly prefer it to watching the chat window.

That wouldn't help with large-scale RP events where these chat bubbles are most needed. I think giving options on the distance and amount of chat bubbles that can be displayed at once would be a good way to allow the user to tweak chat bubbles according to their system's performance as well as their own preference. If they gave an option to allow users to turn turn on chat bubbles for various chat channels individually, it would be great, too.

Exactly. Have options so people can pick how many Chat Bubbles, if any they want displayed, how far away they want the to display, and how big or small they are. Toggle on/off for those who hate them.

No reason they can't be put in. I doubt it takes THAT much coding and development time. But then again, no one thought hood toggles would either...

No way it's gonna happen :) I can foresee 1.5/1.6 coming with chat bubbles though.
It better be 1.5 or even earlier. It's brutal not to be able to play the game properly for a socializer like me. Edited by Cave

People socialize just fine in EQ with no bubbles.
There are people that can socialize fine on IRC or social media as well. That doesn't mean there aren't people that have problems doing so in an MMORPG without chat bubbles and/or voice communication. Besides, Everquest was created in 1999, before chat bubbles were an industry standard in high-quality MMOGs. Star Wars: The Old Republic is a late 2011 MMOG and a large number of people expect features like chat bubbles from a MMOG these days, many of which can't even play the game the way they like without them. Chat bubbles i predict will be obsolete in about 5 years for MMOs as most will switch over to voice overs for all games.Voice integration is the next logical choice for MMOs as folks can really role play with their real voice in a game as well as interact with the game world.

Hardware is light years ahead of software atm.As software writers catch up , more will be possible to do online.

I was disappointed when i saw chat bubbles as interaction in SWG.Not exactly what i envisioned from reading about MMOs for the first time.

Things look very grim for chat bubbles and roleplayers in TOR in general. In case you haven't heard, TOR's Lead Designer Daniel Erickson, one of the few advocates of chat bubbles and roleplay in general, has left Bioware, following other Bioware icons like Rich Vogel, and founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeshchuk among others. It looks like Bioware is now completely under EA's control, which doesn't bode well for roleplayers.

You can read more in the following article:

A prolific voice for RPers leaves BioWare for other pursuits @ SWTOR-RP.com.

So what does the future hold for roleplayers and chat bubbles? Could people that are in charge of the game now please comment on it?

I was disappointed when i saw chat bubbles as interaction in SWG.Not exactly what i envisioned from reading about MMOs for the first time.

Let's see, SWG:

  • Chat Bubbles Enabled: check box to draw bubbles with other players' chat text in them above each character's head. Uncheck this if you do not wish to see the bubbles, perhaps if you're taking screenshots.
  • Chat Bubble Range: modifies the distance at which chat bubbles can be seen.
  • Chat Bubble Font Size: alters the point size of the font used when drawing chat bubble text.
  • Chat Bubble Duration: controls how long chat bubbles stay active above a character's head.
  • Prose Style Chat Bubble Text: automatically capitalizes the first letter in each sentence in a chat bubble. Uncheck this to display bubbles exactly as they are shown in your chat box.
  • Chat Bubbles Show Emotes: toggles the display of emotes in chat bubbles (actions like /wave).
  • Show Chat Bubbles For All Others: checking this forces all the following check boxes:
  • Show Chat Bubbles For...: individually toggles the display of chat bubbles for the player, other players, NPCs, guild members, and group members.

Seriously at the time and even now, none game compares to SWG in terms of tools for communication.

What a list!:( I never played in SWG but already miss it...
Yes. SWG was awesome and is still largely unmatched for it's social, communication and roleplay features. Bioware should have strived to emulate them and combine them with TOR's strong points and TOR would have been a much better and well-rounded game. All the things SWG did well, TOR is lacking, and SWG was lacking the good things about TOR. Combine them and add polish and you'd have a killer MMORPG like no other. Perhaps the next Star Wars MMORPG in 4-9 years (when EA's exclusive Star Wars MMORPG deal expires) will learn enough from both it's predecessors SWG and TOR to finally deliver the experience all Star Wars fans have been craving for. Note that I still hope that TOR will add things like speech bubbles and everything else that made SWG great to reach the great potential this game has.

Admittedly, it still boggles my mind how TOR could simply ignore all the wonderful things about it's predecessor, as well as the many mistakes the developers of SWG made instead of learning from them and doing it better. In my opinion, ignorance as well as bad design and development decisions like this are of the big reasons this game hasn't met expectations and is on a path to failure not even one year past release.

Seriously at the time and even now, none game compares to SWG in terms of tools for communication.

This is how you do Emotions and Chat Bubbles. If this was in TOR, I'd probably never log out lmao!

In all seriousness though, just having Chat Bubbles would be good enough for me. I see that the Devs comment on Hood Toggle, but only once have Chat Bubbles been "spoken of"...

Still no official word on chat bubbles? I just can't bring myself to rp in this game without them. It feels so lifeless. The combination of no chat bubbles and no talking animations means that I may as well be sending a text message while starring at a photograph.

Seriously, I love an official word one way or another. If they are in development then please give us some idea of a time frame. If they are not going to be implemented, then please BW have the decency to say so, so I can stop wasting my time waiting for a feature that will never come and go play a game that does have them.

/signed. It's just so hard to initiate spontaneous world roleplay without chat bubbles :(

and that is the best kind of RP. I fear though that this game is soley based around jsut logging in to do flashpoints and warzones with very little in the interactive RP world.

Its a shame because i am so bored of this game with so little immersion that i cant even log in anymore. I just keep loggin in an out of the character screen.

I am really missng SWG these days. Only had two toons and yet logged in every day.

Yeah. It would be great if they talked to us and told us which patch to expect them in or otherwise. It's just so frustrating not to hear from them about this topic. While communication with the players has improved a little, it's still highly selective and light years away from what it should be.

At any rate, chat bubbles aren't in the current Game Update 1.5 build on the public test server, so it doesn't look very good for them to be added in 1.5 (they said the 1.5 build on public test isn't final, so there is still hope, but I think it's unrealistic to expect them in this patch). Hopefully 1.6 will finally add them to the game, as I think it depends how well their free to play game will do depending if such quality of life features are in the game by free to play launch (it has really affected the live launch that things like that, sitting on chairs, group finder, a customizable GUI and more were missing, they should learn from it and make sure it doesn't happen again with the re-launch).
