Same gender relationships clarifications?

I wanted to add my own two credits on this: A few pages back, I made a long post about my take on what relationships might be taboo in the Star Wars-verse. I'm not going to repost my own post, but I can sum up the relevant parts.

From what I've seen in the game, it is far more taboo to be with an alien than another gender, at least on the Empire side. I always thought that Quinn would be very xenophobic if my SW got together with Vette. He's shown signs of it on my female toon.

Remember, conservative is all relative. :) On the Empire side, good golly, there is a lot of xenophobia going on. I think that's more important to the story than two people S/S of the same species.

For those that don't know, xenophobia is the fear/hate of aliens. And if they have played Imp toons, they'll see what I mean.

On the other hand, think about what it says when all SGR content is 50+ only. Every new character and every new player has to play for weeks in a completely heteronormative environment until they can finally be freed of their closet. I find that somewhat counter to their stated goal of "doing it right".

I concur completely; heck, I find it interesting that, depending on your gender/class, you might not meet the "love of your life" until level 20 or 30 or higher. Simply as an artifact of play, you're going to have more time, and do more quests, with your first companion than with any of the following. I don't have a good design solution, as it would be a nightmare to have you pick any companion in any order and have the stories/quests make sense. (I'm still impressed by how much any random companion has to say on entering instances; it's interesting to think that if I'd gone into a particular place with Gault instead of Mako, I'd have heard different dialog or might have made different conversation choices to guide affection gain.)

Ultimately, I think they're stuck between unsatisfactory solutions; force re-leveling, or, as you say, segregate SGRs to post-50 play.

However, as I've said in this thread, I believe they might actually add both content for the leveling player/those who waited to talk to their companions as well as new content for players at 50 who've done everything already, regardless of their interest in SGRAs or OGRAs.

Their wording was certainly vague enough to allow for a variety of interpretation, but it's somewhat unlikely that they will add 16 new companions just for SGRAs. People have already speculated that it will be a mix of the two - some new companions and some old ones.

I am absolutely certain there will be -- there MUST be -- post 50 story content, romance or not, SGR or not. I think bioware recognizes a lot of the players of SWTOR don't just want "new instances" or "new raids", we want "new story". I am often driven more by the plot of a quest arc than by the random green or blue item I might get as a tangible reward -- I just want to know where the story goes. It's pretty much inconceivable they won't keep advancing that.

And, I agree, it might be that at least some existing companions could become romanceable to different genders, hopefully in ways that fit with their established characterization. (Having only really played BH to any decent level, I can't comment on other classes, but, of my companions, Gault is currently not romanceable by anyone, but there's no good reason for that -- he's humanoid enough that it's not inconceivable a human, sith, etc, would find him attractive, and he's got that whole "bad boy" thing going for him. He also shows up early enough in the BH story arc that it would be comparable to where romance companions show up in many other classes.)

I'll have to admit, I was skeptical of the "We didn't have enough time so had to cut content" line until just recently.

I've finally managed to get all classes to the Interlude on Chapter 1, and have the Primary Companions maxed out in affection and the secondary (and in M1-4X's case the third one) maxed out for Chapter 1 on at least 1 of each class.

If you look closely you can see that they ended up cutting content for the non primary companions.

For every primary companion it follows a formula: As you gain affection you have X number of conversations, then suddenly you get a conversation where "Hey I need you to go with me on a mission to XXX and do YYY".

For your secondary companion (and again with 4X I got the 3rd comanion to it) you get the same formula, but when you geto the point where the Primary Comapanion said "Hey let's go on a mission" instead the companion says "Hey I need to run off on my own and do a mission". And some of the exususes of why they say they need to go solo "Hey, I'm afraid you might spook him if you come with" are obviously (at least in my opninion) contrived fillers.

It seems obvoius to me that they ran out of time, so they had to cut out the missions and instead threw in placeholders. Heck with the 4X mission:

He describes going back to the Casino on Nar Shadda, it seems to me this was tailor made to have anohter instance in the Star Light Casino that you're supposed to go with him to take out the "Imp Spy", and I wouldn't be suprised if there was supposed to be a moral twist where you have to decide "Hey what if he's not REALLY a spy, but just someone that strongly (and by republic standards leagaly disagrees with the Replubic?"

. But instead 4X just narrates to you what happened.

Truth told, I'm kind of curious about this "Story Update" if it's to go back to these secondary companions and make their missions available for you to go with, instead of them just running off to do it off screen.

Yes, there's a moment like that with Doc, too. He mentions something about having to go somewhere (I can't spoil the moment for people as I can't actually remember the details) and I was all set to charge off into the great unknown, and instead he goes, 'Nah, I'll go do it myself,' and he does. That seemed very curious to me.

I don't mind SGRA not being added until post 50, after all, by the time it comes around most people will be level 50 anyway, and it might actually be worse if they only come earlier in the levelling experience and we would have to reroll another of the same class just to experience the storyline. Plus at level 50 your storyline is in "Interlude" so it makes sense to stick it in as part of a new story chapter.

I don't really mind my smuggler, he's flirting with every woman he meets (whatever brings more credits, right?) but he's been saving himself for something more up his alleyway :p

For those of us playing now that might not be such an issue but imagine what it would be like for a brand new player, starting after SGRAs come in, to find that they don't have access to SGRAs until post-50.

Personally I think they'll put something in to allow 50s to go back and pursue SGRAs. I mean, they're pushing Legacy very hard indeed; if they basically said, 'Okay, SGRAs are in but you people at 50 who've gone past the flirt points have to recreate your characters, bad luck,' then it seems to be it'd go against the general trend they seem to be trying to obtain with Legacy (that is, to get people playing lots of characters consistently and not restarting them).

Eh, saying that everyone will be 50 is kind of ignoring the fact that a) this game is very much encouraging alts and b) any MMO has a huge turnover and new players come in at any time. I want both.

 Not sure about anyone else. But , I really would like to hear from the devs sometime soon on which companions will be able to romance when sgra are added. :D

Really hoping for Risha, Kira, Elara, Vette , Jaesa, Nadia, mako, and whoever else I forgot. :p

Unfortunately, the first time we'll hear about this is when the relevant patch goes up on the test servers. Bioware has a history of keeping romance and story spoilers really close to their chests.

Since most classes only get one female companion and those companions are the ones I'm most interested in seeing a f/f SGR with, I'm really, really hoping BioWare goes with adding SGRs for the current companions. My hope list is much the same as yours, with Ashara and maybe Kaliyo and/or Temple added on. I don't want much, just everything. :D Kira and Mako are still my absolute top hopes, as their personalities fit so well with my JK and BH.

Very true. It's probably for the best that it works that way - MMO players do not take well to being told of upcoming features and having those features not show up. Ask anyone who's played WoW. I'd really hate for BW to say something like "Hope you're all looking forward to visiting Dantooine in the story patch!" only to have something happen and we don't get to go to Dantooine.

As for when the story patch goes up on test servers... y'know, I've never played on a MMO test server before, never saw much point to it. But for SGRs, I think I will. It would mean I'd get to see everything twice, maybe more. :D

I'll have to admit, I was skeptical of the "We didn't have enough time so had to cut content" line until just recently.

They've given us enough clues to what their original intentions were. Just look at how the whole thing unfolded.

First they announce no SGRA's in the game. Forums ignite. Their first official response to people requesting SGRA's? "There are no gays in Star Wars". Forums explode. Then they come out with "due to time and money....".

Just looking at the chain of events its pretty clear they originally never intended to have SGRA's period. Basically they got caught with their pants down and didn't understand what the expectations of the player base (and their Senior Vice President) were. Based on what they have and haven't said so far and how they've treated the whole issue I'm still rather skeptical if they know what those expectations are even now.

I'll keep my fingers crossed they'll seek out some help from the BW groups responsible for ME and DA to find out how to properly implement the content, but I'm not holding my breath either.

Ashara, Raina, Kaliyo (who is probably the most likely to...), SCORPIO (for some hot droid lovin'), Akaavi, and Zash!!!! (Yes, I'm still holding out hope that we can get Zash a new body and romance her, or at least flirt with her). :)

well, I can also live with what someone else said here a few pages back (though it was probably mentioned several times)

y'know, some npcs you talked to on your travel, thought 'oh PLEASE be my companion I'll show you the universe and everything' ... for example the twi'lek on tython, the daughter of that matriarch you meet pretty early on in the jedi knight class quest. she seemed pretty cool. she even asked me to become her sister  (just to be clear: I said no, friends is better, but I totally would have picked something else aswell *cough*)

If they implement SGR I hope I can get a companion that looks just like Mr. Slave.

Jesusssss Christ he's hot.

How about a compromise? We all get characters who aren't satirical stereotypes and Bioware adds a male version of the slave outfit for you so you can live out your fantasies.

i say, that if they do add SGR dialogue to current companions (which might not happen), i would like to see something like "i am not usually interested in my own gender, but i can make an exception for you" with Elara pulling your rank into the equation. kinda like Kaidan Alenko, one of their characters in Mass Effect 3.

They should do it exactly like Kaidan! The scene in the cafe where he confesses his man Shep love was absolutely perfect, I almost cried. :)

Obvs spoilers for ME3, but video:

With a new character:

With an imported character (epic:)

"Guess I'm just choosy... or patient..." lol

Kaidan died in ME1 for me. I just couldn't do that to Ash. Mostly because she was my male Shepard's love interest. Even though after she went off on me in ME2, I decided to go with Tali (who went from sweet to freak at the drop of her mask) :D

I did feel bad for her afterwards, though. The convo we had in Engineering after the mission was over, that is. Made me feel like "Ouch!" but at least she thought it was worth it. lol

Also, in that final mission, my entire "Dirty Dozen" came back alive.

I can see were your coming from on that. I'm on the fence about it atm. After seeing that it took nearly until the end of the guild summit for them to answer does raise some doubts. But right now waiting to see what happens. :) Really hoping for risha for my smuggler :D

I really don't think it's fair to say that BioWare not saying anything about SGRs 'till the end of the guild summit means anything. They had a ton of stuff to cover, and most of it had nothing to do with companions or the relationships with them; BW clearly wanted to get their players interested and excited about stuff that's coming soon, rather than stuff that only had a date of "this year". If BW had said they weren't going to discuss SGRs, or if they hadn't answered the question at all, then I think there might be reason to doubt. And like I've said, we haven't heard anything else about the story update patch, so I think it's safe to say we'll hear more about all of this only when BW is ready to talk about it.

Of course, this is just my opinion, I could be wrong. :o

And I'll be really surprised if Risha doesn't become an SGR option for the smuggler. She really seems like an "anything goes" kind of person, and for some reason I can see her laughing hysterically at some poor guy who hits on her and then telling him he's not woman enough for her. :D I too am hoping for her as an SGR option, because she really doesn't suit my male Smuggler and would fit my planned female one much more.

I can't wait for the same gender romances to happen, and i'm so happy to hear that they are coming...eventually....

...one can hope.

Also it would be really nice, to get a male 'dancer' social outfit for male NPCs.
