morfius
Some advices... Don't disable services until you have good knowledge what exactly they do... otherwise you could have OS issues instead of boost. Stop nerding witch OS is better, it depends on current hardware. New OS works better on new hardware (even low budget one), older OS could over perform it dramatically on older but high end one. I have done many performance tests, fastest Windows OS till now is 2003 server, but it is not easy to install on new chipsets and little mistake here could degrade performance very much. So until you have a chipset that doesn't support XP, try both OS (all have trials on Microsoft sites if I remember right). It is time consuming of course, to install 2 OS with all drivers and patches to do a series of benchmarks. At least if you have ATI video, try to change settings there, not in game. Little tweaking in ATI Catalist Control Center gave me about 10 FPS more... (Nvidia center could also have such options but I have not been used Nvidia cards in years). So my advise for average users - don't stop anything else than Aero, Sidebars, Search ... try your video driver software settings and avoid Vista, it is worst in performance from all Windows I have tested. Loekii
Great post. Although I am still on Vista 64b, thank you for posting this. Could you post a 'Before' and 'After' Ingame Screenshot in the OP, maybe to demonstrate the potential improvement?
Crawelc
FYI, the latest nVidia beta drivers (from the 20th) gave me a HUGE jump in FPS; plus, they fixed a lot of the weird texture issues I was having. I have checked Nvidia website every day since pre releas and they show no new drivers, where do I find the beta ones?
renegadeimp
I have checked Nvidia website every day since pre releas and they show no new drivers, where do I find the beta ones? You have to go to sites like guru3d as they get released there first, due to modders and serious enthusiasts visiting there.

Perastus
I tried doing this with windows vista and now whenever I load the client it crashes, any idea why? Edit- Tried to do a system restore, after about 10mins it restarted my computer and gave me an error message saying system can't be restored. I went back through and re-enabled everything I disabled, and I'm still getting the same problem. Any help? renegadeimp
The guide was written for Win 7 and can work on win xp. I wont write a guide for vista because i consider it one of the worst operating systems ever designed.. apart from windows ME that is. If you have followed the guide and created system restore points like the guide said, simply find the earliest restore point and activate it. MemGeo
Thanks. My laptop could run the game fine, but I had to turn it in under warranty for a repair. It won't be back for a couple of weeks. I installed the game on my wife's 4yr old laptop and I can't even see my character picture at the log in even though it meets the minimum requirements. I am hoping this will fix the problem. If nothing else it should make her laptop run faster.

balone
Aright I work at a company and I have an extremely maxed out computer for gaming at the moment. It's almost brand new and I've done everything listed in this little guide. How does SWTOR work? Horrible. FPS outside goes from 90-110 FPS with maxed graphical settings but in certain areas, such as the Imperial Fleet and in every single Cantina around the world, my FPS drops to 20-39, which causes suffering to me. I wonder if you still believe in the fact that the "FPS problem" is only a result of crying kids that don't know much about computers? Maybe a 28 years old man with this computer spec can prove the opposite? renegadeimp
So you are saying that the issue is connected to the GPU developers? This will be fixed when NVIDIA releases drivers optimized for the game? I can guarantee that when Nvidia and AMD release FULL dedicated profiles for this game (not the stupid minimal crap thats in the beta drivers atm), you will see a noticable drop in complaints about graphic errors. Why? Because i use a dedicated profile that has been coded for me by a GPU modder and i have NEVER encountered any of the problems that seem to be rampant in this forum. And i use 2x 6970's in Crossfire. Edited December 29, 2011 by renegadeimp

Flain
Gamebooster is a free and useful utility for turning off all those unneeded windows services, plus it has tweaks that you can also apply easily. Most of the times you will get upto a 40% increase in performance after using it. It can also be used to defrag only your games folders on your hardrive. I use it all the time and it's easy to use and convenient.
Squizzo
My framerate stays at about 35fps in the open game world, no matter if the settings are on the lowest with 600x800 or maxed out with 1680x1050. I also occasionally suffer 1-2 seconds of lag while my latency is apparently at 60ms. Now my computer isn't exactly top of the line, but it's no slouch either: 2.8ghz amd quad core 4gb DDR3 Nvidia GTX 280 (all drivers up to date 29/12/11) I can play Skyrim on ultra settings, 8xAA, 1680x1050 at 35fps (or more!). So how is it a much less graphically intense game with no AA can run at the same fps while running on settings that look like something from the 90's. I am not keen on Windows and I didn't think I use it to play games, so I had only Debian running on it.. SWTOR changed everything and I was still a lucky having 10-15 fps. Thanks to your guide it's now 30-40 fps. I even can use high textures for enviroment and character now and I have to say, man does my char look good. Renegadeimp, thank you a lot.
