I dont see how its my web habits guys. I dont look at ****. In fact i can list all the websites i visit typically.

http://www.thefiringline.com http://www.google.com sometimes i use http://www.yahoo.com . I also go to http://www.opencarry.org and http://www.sherdog.net/forums as well as http://www.martialtalk.com and its forums. I also spend alot of time on youtube and i have also visted torhead a few times.

Thats it, so i dont see how its my browsing habbit at all..

Someone mentioned changing settings in my router security, well im password enabled but for some reason every time i go to the security section(on my room mates computer) on the router settings it says duplicate administrator and then gives some numbers like 192.xxx.xxx.x.x I have yet to figure that one out.

the 192 addresses are your internal NATing at work. Those don't leave your network. You use a single IP address via BGP (assuming Cisco at work here since Cisco owns 95% of the market share in networks). Those, and APIPA's, are basically irrelavant.

What the risk here that people are bouncing around are known as Drive-By Downloads, usually implanted in Flash Banners/Advertisements, sometimes put there maliciously through SQL injections.

Deny it all you want, but you aren't just magically getting all of those viruses while doing nothing, and 99% of all viruses you are likely to be exposed to, require you to click something to actually get infected. It's not like they just crawl around the internet actively infecting "innocent" users.

Ok, so I just lost my Asus ROG laptop. Sure it was 3 years old and out of warrenty, but it was powerfull enough to play anygame i wanted. Well i had just upgraded to Trend Micro Titanium maximum 2012. I had been using them in the years prior and had no issues.. Well apparently the crap their peddling now isnt worth what i payed for it. It seamed to pick up and take care of some viruses and then be able to do nothing about others. Requiring me to use their virus removal service. Which was ok, becuase my subscription came with free removal services.. Well 1 week after i had them remove it, it was back, and apparently i had used up all my free removal services, and it costs start at $75 to remove viruses and go up from there. They have a nice racket going on, soaking supscribers for removal services.. I expected there top of the line programe to deal with this, instead it lets it go. I didnt have the money to pay for the removal, so i decided to wait for my next pay check.

Well, i didnt get to wait that long. I opend my lid to see a BSOD, and when i tried to do a windows repair and windows could not repair it self. I had long since lost my copy of windows 7 due to having moved 3 times since i bought the computer. So now i have a $1200 paper weight, all thanks to my not having the backup cd, and not having proper AV software.

So Which subscription based paid for AV software out there does not suck like Trend micro now apparently does?

Secondly i need build advice, Mostly regarding A good budget build with expandability, with decent Cpu and GPU that will play all games, including this one, whith out breaking the bank. Budget is no more then $1500 so i know the gpu must eat a lot of that budget.. Its been YEARs since i built a computer, Is it still intell<Amd or has Amd finealy released anything worth a crap.

If you dont mind paying, I suggest Kaspersky. That is, assuming the company/product is still around. lol I haven't used an AV program in years. At a certain point you just know what you're downloading and whether or not you can potentially get a virus or not.

If you dont want to pay, then I suggest Avast. It's free and is a good substitute.

It's possible.

now now now, dont go spreading lies.

First of all, if you're computer is connected to a router BEFORE it connects to your modem, then that will prevent you from being 'scanned and infected'(assuming you dont forward all the ports to your computer lol).

Second of all, if you dont go to malicious websites, AND dont download anything stupid, AND you have a router between your computer and the modem, then you are incredibly safe from viruses.

Still, I suggest keeping Windows up to date ALWAYS. But if you do like I said above then you dont need virus scanning software. BUT dont be naive. If you have a child that uses your computer dont just assume they wont do anything. They could just be following a link and end up someplace bad. And I can't stress this enough, dont just assume. . .even if they're a goody goody two shoes(that's the phrase right? lol) it could still happen.

Do I recommend others to not use an anti-virus? No, it's one of those, 'do as I say, not as I do' moments lol. But you definitely are safe without an anti-virus program if you know what you're doing. Even then it could /still/ happen, but the odds are soooooooo low. I probably haven't used an AV program in 7 years and have never gotten a virus(and I download from the newsgroups every day).

In my 10+ years of experience as an IT consultant, it just doesn't happen. Certainly not in the way the OP is talking about it. If his complaint was that his AV failed to catch a single virus, then sure, that's possible. But when he's talking about catching all multiple viruses and not being able to get rid of them, etc, it starts to shift the focus towards him.

I didnt even know script blockers existed till this thread sadly. Since i primearly use IE, which script blockers can you reccomend to me.

Firefox with noscript (and I'd go for ad block plus as well)

Now i know some of the av out there has firewalls, but incase i get one that dosent, which firewalls do you guys reccomend.

Zonealarm Free is ok, not as good as it use to be, but still fine. There's other free (and paid) ones out there too.

I did once get something that came in through an open port in database software I was using, but that was before I had a proper router in my system. Since then I have improved my security and never had a recurrance.

These days I have my router and windows firewall, avast and windows defender, firefox with noscript and ad block plus and I keep everything up to date. Occassionally I will get something in a spam mail or I will get a warning about a risky web link, and naturally I don't follow such links or open suspicious mail.

But with respect, if you never use an AV program how can you be sure there is nothing untoward on your computer? You may well be correct, but without scanning you can't be certain.

I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials now. I used to run free AVG but it let me down and missed a keylogger. Microsoft detected it. There's are a number of websites that will compare the various software and rate them on how well they detect and how many resources they use up.

NOD32, AVAST or Microsoft Security Essentials is pretty much the only way to go, coupled with Google Chrome with Ad Block and common sense, you will pretty much be immune to viruses.

I've been using computers for 16 years now and not once have I lost an installation of Windows due to a virus.

I should have been more clear, I never use them anymore.

I used to be paranoid about not using one and would do the random scans, both via Online Virus scans as well and thorough scans with like avast and kaspersky. Eventually I just got tired of keeping the software running when it would never find anything.

Even programs like spybot search and destroy I quit using because they just weren't useful for me. A scan with spybot like once every two years is enough to keep what little clutter i do accumulate down.
