Game Update 7.4 "Chains in the Dark" Updates

Recommended Posts

Hi Jackie,

Not sure if this is tied to the memory leak issue, but I have an issue where the I will go to launch the game from either of the Steam based launcher or the directly downloaded version - sometimes get to the splash screen and occasionally But like 1 out (not sure how many) tries get into the game.

When it does not get into the game it will either black screen and then shut down or get to splash screen and then dump be back to desktop or get a BSOD pointing to a driver issue.

I have looked at the event viewer and seen the following:

@JackieKoI’m also getting the App crash dialog every time I go to shut swtor down now. I get the similar Microsoft message as above that swtor.exe app has crashed & do I want to send Microsoft the data. Only difference is mine is AMD, not Nvidia or Intel. This sure sounds like driver issues linked to the new lighting.

I also noticed after the game crashed last time. That all my in game preferences (not the graphics) have been reset to default. Things like sound, zoom, dialogue settings, combat settings, social settings etc. I had to go back in & reset everything back the way I had it & it’s still not right 😔

Obviously you guys made some changes while the game was live to make this happen. But next time, do you think you could give us a heads up on the forums first? As I still haven’t got all my settings back the way I want them. At least with a heads up, we could go in and record what they all are before you reset them.

@JackieKoThe game is still taking over 6 minuets to unload from memory after I close the game. I'm left staring at a black screen for 6 minuets before I am returned to the desktop then is continues to dump for another 30 to 40 seconds before it is done.

It appears that there is still a memory leak someplace that is causing allot of disk caching.

System Info:

Intel Core I7-8700K @3.70GHz
16 GB of DDR4 memory
NVIDIA GeForcs GTX 750 TI @1920x1080
ASUS TUF Z370-PRO Gaming Motherboard
Windos 10 Pro 64bit Version 22H2
OS build 19045.3696
Game Drive Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 89 GB free

in the game folder, you will find another swtor folder, in that delete just the file called diskcachearena, see if that helps with closing

can you place the game into window mode per https://answers.ea.com/t5/General-Discussion-Technical/Guide-Game-failing-to-launch-on-Clicking-Play/m-p/4809830/highlight/true#M70795 and maybe try an older video driver version just to be sure, use ddu first

Hi everyone,

Follow up from the team regarding the freezing screen issue. We're still investigating and would love to know the following:
If the game is NOT currently running, please go to the following locations:

  • C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\SWTOR\swtor\DiskCacheStatic
  • C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\SWTOR\swtor\DiskCacheStream

Please answer the following:

  • Do you see these files?
  • Are they read-only?
  • When you delete the files (it's safe to do so!), what happens when you run the game? Does deleting these files change what happens when you run the game?

Good morning, everyone,

Following up on the freezing screen issue. First, thank you to everyone who submitted the DxDiag and client_settings_ini files.

Second, below are potential workarounds for this issue.

  • Delete the DiskcacheStatic and DiskCacheStream files if they are found in the following paths:
    • C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\SWTOR\swtor\DiskCacheStatic
    • C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\SWTOR\swtor\DiskCacheStream
  • With the game closed/not running, RENAME the client settings ini file to client_settings_broken.ini. This can be found here:
    •  C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\SWTOR\swtor\settings

To reiterate, these are potential workarounds as they have worked for some players, but not all. We are still investigating and trying to repro this issue. The team is asking for the following information relevant to the SECOND bullet point. Please read through the following breakdown fully.

If you are currently experiencing the frozen loading screen issue and you RENAME (not delete) the client settings ini file, run the game and if it works, we are requesting that you submit the following to communitysupport@swtor.com

  • The original Client_settings.ini file
  • Client_settings_broken.ini file (this is the one you renamed)
  • And a DXDiag report (please only send in a recently run file)

The team needs would like to see a before and after comparison of the ini files hence the instruction to rename the file first.

When you submit the files, please be sure to include your SWTOR account name.

Thanks all!

Jackie , just making sure here since a few guildmates were asking me:  That ^ NEW email address  is  only for  frozen loading screen related issues , whereas the prior  support@swtor.com   email address still exists for all OTHER  game related issues too , correct?

Or has the newer  communitysupport@swtor.com  replaced the other  prior email address now?

The former is correct. I am asking players to use the community support email for this specific issue. But support@swtor.com should continue to be used for all other game related issues.

Hi Trixie - this is a new install. Freshly patched with the original launcher.

I have attempted to use the steam launcher as well and get the same issue.

I have also attempted to repair the client_settings.ini file as suggested in my original thread, along with the suggestion to simply delete the file - all failed.

Other more modern games run well (when they run given they are buggy messes when released) and this should run on my system given that it is an overkill system.

Yeah, it’s not your hardware. But it could be your hardware drivers. It’s also possible that you have left over past files from previous installs causing you issues. I know I had a problem years ago with old Steam files doing this.

While I have tech knowledge to do IT support. It’s been a long time since I’ve done remote support & I kind of need to see what I’m doing now so I don’t mess up someone’s system.

Owen is definitely the man to talk to for swtor. He’s even helped me in the past with some really random problems I couldn’t troubleshoot.

Just provide @OwenBrooks with any info he asks for & try & follow him step by step.

And send any related info back to Jackie if she asks for it so she can pass it onto the dev team too.

The disckcachearena file is created on the first launch of swtor , so if you have played swtor that file exists

see its location below so once you get to the install folder its  Star Wars-The Old Republic\swtor

Ok so quick update on my disappeared holocoms, lightsaber blades, aoe animations which also included the boss circles on the ground or the enemies shots in space mission, I lowered my anti-aliasing to medium and now it works normally.
On the imperial saboteur problem... I did the mission with my imperial saboteur and it worked for me, like I got the option and everything. I play on the french version of the game, an operative chiss if anyone is curious.

common issue with certain amd drivers , also seen occur with those that use reshade

for resahde can disable it in the Reshade.ini by placing this in the [Depth] section
DisableINTZ=1

that will allow you to use high AA again
