What were you saying though? Were you in general chat? Were you spamming guild recruitment messages? What were you doing when you got squelched exactly?

Thats usually what people hate there is this one guild on the Ebon Hawk that spams allies, gen chat... and fleet, and everywhere..........

But ya i mean what exactly did you say? Say to someone (like Tano Vik) their mother looked like the rear end of a Bantha? Or ERP'ing in gen chat?

I know the guild you're talking about! And their guild leader. They're awful. :(

Sadly squelch abuse doesn't require you to actually do anything. People can hit /report spam on you even if you don't post anything.

Don't 10 people have to report you in a short amount of time for that to happen? I can't imagine someone could find 9 other people to report someone just to annoy them.

Oh I can see this happening on harb easily. I know it's happened. Some guilds do this. Some banded together to target other guild leaders so they couldn't organise conquest runs.

is ANYTHING being done about this old issue?

i just got squelched on the fleet for no reason. i had alt tabbed out of the game to do some internet browsing, then i went back in the game to reply to a whisper from a friend. but i couldnt, because i was squelched. i have never spammed in this game, not even for guild recruitment. i know that there was a group of players that wanted to greif me, and now they've done it. i cant enjoy the game until i am unsquelched.

days of my sub will now be wasted.

what the hell.

If you are anything like the guys on The Garbinger that sits on the fleet saying in general chat and on the pvp chat: "Game is sh**!", "I enjoy ranked!" and bombarding us with Murica political non-sense, trash talking each other over regs or ranked or (gigles) pve content every 10 min or so 24/7 no scope non stop then it was well deserved.

:jawa_mad:

Edit; not to mention the racial trash talk that goes on from time to time. I love this game but sometime the player base is pretty awful.

If you want any sympathy in a forum you'll need to be more specific. One of Harbinger's most notorious GenChat trolls ALWAYS plays the victim when he gets squelched. He whines in game and occasionally in these forums. Without more details that's all squelch complainers sound like.

If you're playing the game normally there is virtually no reason 10 people would ever notice you enough to want to squelch you, let alone repeatedly.

Guild recruitment? No one cares unless you repeat it obnoxiously.

Political topics brought up? This is Star Wars and a game. You deserve it if you started it, and deserve it if you fed the trolls.

LFG recruitment? See guild recruitment.

Did you ninja loot an ops group? You deserve it forever.

WTS/WTB ads? See guild recruitment.

Did you rob a guild bank? You deserve it.

Are you begging like a toddler for people to join ranked PvP and then trashing everyone back in fleet that fell for your toddler entreaties? You deserve it.

Are you whispering/openly raging at people in PvP? Following them on alts when you justly get ignored? You deserve it.

Scamming people into using your referral link and not paying what you promised?

Did someone not play the game exactly to your standards? Didn't use an adrenal or keybind or use the "only" possible rotation or write an essay on your YouTube study before doing an op or link hidden achievements with your YouTube link of you soloing all ops naked or you simply didn't RNG your way to BiS gear the day after each new tier drops? Did you not politely offer advise but decide to insult and rage at them because they aren't as awesome as you? (even though you were actually carried through yourself)

I'm sure there are a lot more reasons 10 people would squelch someone. But the least likely reason would be "I was minding my own business and suddenly I got squelched out of nowhere."

That has actually happened before, so it isn't entirely implausible. There were some guilds who were abusing the report function to squelch members of guilds that were rivals in Conquest or PVP. At least one guild was even openly boasting about it in the chatbox for their forum.

I of course have no idea if that is what happened to the OP or even if that still goes on. I just know it happened in the past and used to be a frequent source of complaint threads on this forum.

Yes this. As I said previously people have been going around squelching specific guild members. They have done it in the past to mess with conquest

Some people on fleet are just spamming stuff that is not called for. Myself - I'll SPAM report you for doing any of the D-bag moves.

  • ALL CAPS non-stop spitting crap from mouth about politics or whatever your beef.
  • Guild Recruitment messages that contain foul mouthed garbage.
  • Being a royal ahole Cyber Bully - Just nit-picking the crap out of someone.
  • Asking for millions of credits or a specific item to be given to you (Non-Stop spamming).

Beyond that I suspect you might have been talking smack about a certain LARGE multiple guild organization that has like 3 guilds on each PUB/IMP fleet. Maybe pissed off an officer and one of them decided to enlist some help smacking you down because they can't PVP for crap. (Or GSF or PVE). - Just throwing that out as an option, but it's like throwing newsworthy stones at Scientologists and expecting them to not file non-stop lawsuits against you.

Least likely was what I said. I know there are people out there who only want to ruin other people's time and that is the only satisfaction they get out of their unfulfilling and sad lives. I'd be all for Bioware doing more to punish those types but that's so unlikely and probably not worth Bioware's time/resources to track them. I know it's ****** up but I'm sure EA, when asked for approval to put resources into something like that, tells Bioware internally "those are 10 subs versus one" and to "do the math"

Would love nothing more in the world than for Bioware to prove me wrong on that cynical take. But I don't mind snarking the people who make this game unbearable for a lot of people

They don't do that. My guild would be the ones punished by Bioware for abusing the squelch system and we are told specifically not to squelch people and when you're a large guild you have a wide assortment of players who can do various aspects of the game and to varying degrees than when you only have a small smattering of opportunities to run ops and so on in other guilds where you bench a majority of the guild and don't care they can't regularly run content.

We're an inclusive guild who are happy to help our players get into content- if that means people of any skill level can do things together and you know, hang out as guildies, then yes, we're guilty.:t_smile:

  • 2 years later...

After returning from a 2 year hiatus I attempted to assist my old guildies in rebuilding their guild by trying to recruit. Suddenly in red letters is 'squelched' so looked it up and researched the threads.

So apparently chatting one on one with someone who's not in a guild is now a kind of spam? Are the small guilds supposed to always be small? No warning of any kind just perma silenced. Glad I only did a 90 day sub and will no longer be purchasing cartel coins from Amazon.

Firstly welcome back, secondly, fear the walking dead necro

Seriously though, were you spamming the gen chat trying to recruit? I can tell you, I report spam when people do that more than once every 5 mins. Some do it every minute or every few. They type so much at a time that it blocks out conversations.

What Bioware need to do is create a recruitment channel that people can turn on or off as needed, Spamming gen chat will get you squelched.

Thanks for the WB :)

Seriously just whispering to people who were not in a guild. I whisper to them once while on that planet. On another planet I see an unguilded similar to my level and whisper them. If they say 'nope' I put them on ignore which makes sure I never bother that person ever again. There is a chance that I may accidentally whisper them if I see them the next day if they didn't whisper me back.

A recruitment channel is a great idea.

I auto ignore / report spam anyone who whispers my non-guild characters trying to recruit. It was fairly common prior to 6.0 landing to get messages like that, or a guild invite on non-guild characters (which also got an ignore / report spam).

It's possibly the most annoying thing that someone can do to another player who may be in the middle of a story-line or fight somewhere. Breaks the immersion.

The only way to resolve it is to have a dedicated guild recruitment channel or have similar systems to other games where players can browse guilds and request to join. That way no-one gets annoyed by recruitment messages in chat, nor do those recruiting get squelched.

Thing about being squelched is it only happens if enough people report you (it is also not permanent)

So if you are annoying enough people so that they get you squelched, you may want to try a different tactic.

+1 for dedicated recruitment channel.

I would also like a reverse-ignore list. Ignore everyone by default unless I specifically allow them

Just a couple days ago, a DPS of all people fell asleep in the HM FP queue.

I yelled at them about 20 times in a whisper to "Wake the hell up!"

...and got squelched for 24 hours.

Called customer support and got the usual, "can't do anything" bullcrap.

=8-(

Are you joking or actually clueless as to why your behaviour was both incredibly annoying and wrong?

Who is the problem? Myself and others inconvenienced by people falling asleep in the queue?

Or people for whom a MM FP queue pop is so important - they're not around when it pops?

This has become a real problem on Satele Shan - person after person asleep in the MM FP queue.

That's not a bad idea, I do wonder if players in need of a guild would use it, or would recruiters just be posting to an empty chat room? still may be worth trying.

I report Gold sellers often which don't get squelched, I surely cannot be the only one who does? So there must be a lot of players reporting recruiters if players are being squelched, seems odd. However if sending whispers to players out of the blue and those players report it as harassment HuaRya , that may indeed get you squelch very quickly.

Hey, I just got squelched on Star Forge server for trying to recruit in 'allies' chat. ***. This is totally WRONG.

I cannot talk to any of my guildies - or anyone in group. I cannot even whisper for help.

I was NOT even spamming for money - just posting recruitment messages in Allies chat. Some guy told me i was

squelched and i was unable to talk anymore in any chat.

Can something be done about this? this has the effect of players ordering other players around and telling them what to do.

Is there any way to get rid of the 'squelch' option? This ability is very easily abused by players who do not like you.

Obviously the staff should get rid of this easily abused 'Squelch' ability

No.... that's totally right. Allies chat is not for recruiting, it's for filling groups cross instance.... and is generally used by people in guilds already, so obviously recruitment is not welcome.

Beyond that.. who knows..... it's the internet.. he could spin us any yarn he likes.. from complete truth to complete fiction. :)

Perhaps he is actually an exiled Nigerian Prince, desperately trying to raise the funds to reclaim his father's kingdom...
