[Combat] The Next Generation of a Star Wars MMO Title

I'd like to preface this forum post with my outright belief that SWTOR is a great game. I've spent some really great hours in this game and I really like it however I truly believe that the next generation of MMO titles are making a shift with the style of combat that is implemented. With recent MMO titles such as Blade and Soul, Black Desert Online and 2014's release of The Elder Scrolls: Online I believe that this could be a trend.

So with that said what are your thoughts about a possible next generation of Star Wars MMO where active combat is introduced? Maybe stepping away from the traditional point and click/cooldown combat to more of an active combat gameplay style?

In my opinion, Disney/EA should purchase a license to Black Desert Online's engine. It's my understanding that it isn't a customized version of a pre-existing engine but rather built from the ground up. This might allow it to be licensed a bit easier and let's be honest... Everything in this world has a price tag.

I would love to experience an MMO with the combat system that Black Desert Online has but built inside of the Star Wars universe. I feel that a Star Wars title with that type of engaging combat and crafting/sandbox would be an instant hit.

They invested something like 200 million dollars to make this game. They're not going to invest another 200 million to adapt to the flavour of the month. SWTOR has problems, but combat style isn't one of them.

I'd have to disagree. In my opinion, the top two shortcomings of SWTOR are it's combat system and the damn launcher. Also, I highly doubt even modifying the Hero Engine itself cost $200m considering Elder Scrolls: Online utilizes the same engine and the game director laughed hysterically at similar claims for the development of their entire game stating that if their game cost that much he'd be out of a job.

the Hero Engine itself cost $200m

The license they use for what was Hero Engine is less than a quarter million. (I have the $99 license myself)

ESO did not use Hero Engine as a base for their game. It was used as a test bed to plot out the storyline.

The high costs involved were due to the voice acting that's in the game.

The $200m or whatever figure that gets quoted was retracted.

Firstly, your quote is so out of context. Fix it. I never stated that the engine itself cost $200m.

This is what was stated:

You want real time combat Star Wars? Battlefront ----> thataway

Here's reality - not gonna be another Star Wars MMO anytime soon.

An MMO takes in the range of 5 to 6 years before you can even talk about a release date. If another MMO were in progress, it would have leaked by now.

SWTOR is profitable. That means EA isn't going to sink more resources into developing a new MMO.

Since EA has the exclusive SW games license, no one else can make one. If they were to start development on a new MMO, it would be to compete with their existing product, which is profitable.

Common sense will tell you that's a bad idea. And if that's not enough, then your shareholders will be a little louder about it.

Battlefront is far below the MMORPG experience seen in other titles titles that was noted in the OP. Battlefront isn't even a good active combat system really. If you haven't played BDO yet then I recommend you do because you might not know what active combat is in an MMORPG yet.

I'm not saying Battlefront is a good game. I'm saying it's about the closest you're going to get to Star Wars realtime combat.

An MMO as you're describing has very little chance of ever getting made while EA holds the exclusivity license, and there's no way to know if the trend will outlive the license agreement.

The trend (afaik) has been running for near 5 years now.

It would seem the trend has been being developed, rather than running, since both examples you cited are 2016 releases, and as such, its a bit early to judge their success or failure.

I'd have to disagree. In my opinion....

Every single person on the planet has an opinion. Yours, and your disagreement, are irrelevant. Bioware and EA have invested waaaaay too much in this game to toss it for, as someone already said, a flavor of the month.

You're kidding, right? Do you know how to read a calendar? DC Universe Online was released in 2011. Elder Scrolls: Online in 2014. Blade and Soul in 2012(KR), 2016(US). Black Desert Online 2014 (KR) and 2016(US).

Flavor of the month has lasted over 5 years and is still continuing. As for "floaty" combat that is repetitive rotations watching cool downs there has been a decrease.

"Active combat" is at least part of what's kept me from playing each of those games you listed.

While I don't begrudge anyone their interest in an "active combat" Star Wars MMO... it would come at the price of SWTOR, and that I cannot abide.

Doesn't matter if archaeologists discover proof that ancient Egyptians used what you propose. It's not a mechanic I want in my game. There's a reason I don't play the games you've listed.

I get that you want to see aspects of other games you enjoy in this one. Heck, I'm a big fan of American football and I always thought SWTOR needs more trap blocking ... and extra points. But I like this game as it is.

Why are you opposed to an active combat game? Does watching cooldowns and rolling your face through your hotbar keep you interested in the combat mechanics?

For those that are opposed to an action combat system. Would you stop playing SWTOR if they made this switch?

I remain subbed year-round, even when I know I'm taking a six-month break from the game. $15/month is utterly meaningless to me.

Yes, I would cancel my sub and uninstall the game if they made this change.

What exactly dissuades you from playing an MMO with active combat? Is it the learning curve or is the skill ceiling too high for you in particular?

It's not that complicated. I am dissuaded from playing those MMOs for the reason I don't listen to Country Music ... I find no entertainment value in it.

You gave your recourse but didn't answer why. Why would you do that?

Are you not "good" at those kinds of games or do you find active immersion into the combat a bad thing?
