pquadro
This is a major, major change This is going to impact every class and basically force everyon to re-learn a class and respec Is unbelievable. I am very concerned, will the game be fun again One grows accostumed to a certain progression and playstyle and you decide to completely change it? This level of madness I only have see in SWG, and when they did change so much the game play, the game broke and closed within months I am very disappointed and worried http://www.swtor.com/blog/developer-update-introduction-disciplines

Nothematic
If anything all the system does is give you more choice when it comes to how you want to play your class. SpirantKaze
I just hope that it takes away the "Standard" builds that we have right now. I hate having to have the exact same build and such as every other DPS/Healer on the server. If it gives us more freedom to customize our spec without sacrificing performance, I'm all for it. This level of madness I only have see in SWG, and when they did change so much the game play, the game broke and closed within months I am very disappointed and worried http://www.swtor.com/blog/developer-update-introduction-disciplines It actually doesn't sound like it's going to force everyone to learn a new spec. It sounds like they've taken the "must have" stuff from the trees and given them to you as you level. Then they've taken some of the "optional, build to your taste" stuff from the trees and given you a way to get them as you level, too. So whatever spec you play, the "guts" of it are there for you just because you leveled. You don't even have to click any buttons to take it. You'll still be a tank or a healer or a DD probably with mostly the same core skills and core feel. You just might have a bit more leeway in getting to the optional stuff that fell outside of the "must have" skills. I expect to log into my Shadow Tank post-patch, select the set of optional skills I had selected in my talent build, and to be able to play effectively immediately. That is... if they've implemented it properly. On that, we shall see.
Vashforth
From reading the blog, it sounds like they know what they are doing. Plus, lets face it, the skill tree didn't really do anything for us. We all spec'd pretty much all the same and had all the same abilities. This just streamlines it for us. Sure, for some it may seem like they are dumbing it down but anyone before hand would just go to Dulfy and look at a spec. It really shouldn't frustrate the rotation type gameplay. pquadro
. So after we finished pulling out all of the skills that we thought were really important for a Discipline’s play style and rotation, we took the remaining skills from each of the three Advanced Classes, cut some of the extraneous ones, created some exciting new options, polished old favorites, and put them into a selection pool available to all members of that Advanced Class. They basically chopped entire skillsets and created new rotations from scratch without even asking the playerbase But this is WILD!

Actually, if you read the entirely of the blog post you will realize that BioWare intends to remove all variation and make everyone follow a "standard build" from lvl 10 to lvl 60. The only choices you will get to make will be for relatively trivial "utility skills."

This level of madness I only have see in SWG, and when they did change so much the game play, the game broke and closed within months I am very disappointed and worried http://www.swtor.com/blog/developer-update-introduction-disciplines By all accounts, the primary progression and playstyle are going to remain the same. Take a Gunslinger for example. A Sharpshooter will still progress to get trickshot, the charged aim effect, burst volley, etc... But take for example the ability Cool Under Pressure from the Saboteur tree which does the following: "While in cover, you heal for [0.5 / 1]% of your total health every 3 seconds." Or the ability Riot Screen in the Saboteur tree (much higher up than tier 1) which does the following: "Reduces all damage taken while in cover by 3% and reduces the cooldown of Scrambling Field by 15 seconds." Under the new system, I believe the idea is that you can use your utility points on Riot Screen or Cool Under Pressure regardless of whether you are a Sharpshooter, Saboteur, or Dirty Fighting. It could great or just end up like the skill tree before hand, where there is an optimal skill layout for a particular play type (dps, heal, tank). Why do we have to be force fed a playstyle change is beyond me. That is what enrages me, not the thing in itself. But the fact that they woke up and instead of trying to adjust balance they say...**** that lets do a new system from scratch and screw everyone else
MillionsKNives
They basically chopped entire skillsets and created new rotations from scratch without even asking the playerbase But this is WILD! Who says they changed the rotations? Certainly not the dev that you're quoting. They said that they took what was core to the class and rotation and then gave it baseline. Then they took some of the other optional utility stuff and changed/added/polished them and are offering them as optional utility stuff. Basically from position of a max level character you won't be able to tell the difference, aside from whatever balancing they ended up doing. From their description this seems like a very positive change with marginal impact to gameplay.

But this new system doesn't change A THING except not having to buy skill from a trainer. Seriously its not a big deal. It basically specs for you as you level. Just like going to Dulfy and finding the best spec. I dont see YET how this will hurt your rotation. Plus, when has there been an expansion to a game that didn't force people to change their rotation up.

And we will be FORCED to adapt to whatever change has been made without asking or demanding it at all Actually BioWare pretty much directly said that each advanced class playstyle is going to stay the same. Let me dredge up some quotes for you. "We created three Disciplines per Advanced Class, named and themed after the original Skill Trees (for example the three Disciplines for Commando are Combat Medic, Gunnery, and Assault Specialist, all very familiar names, themes, and play-styles from the skill tree era). For each of these disciplines, we took a look at all of the skills from their tree ancestor and imported everything that defined the identity and rotation of that tree and laid them out in a level-based progression, along with quite a bit of combining, cutting, creating new, and balancing along the way. No longer are you forced to purchase skills that are, in essence, necessary for your character to function; you simply get them automatically as you level up and progress down what we call the Discipline Path." Casuals are the people who keep their paychecks from bouncing. Everyone has essentially a fixed build already. There are few variables or options and they have very limited impact. Go look at the most popular skill tree sites for this game. They all say the same thing: "YOU MUST DO THIS, these 3 or 4 things can go this way or that". The differences are: 1) You don't have to click through the trees for the "YOU MUST DO THIS" part. 2) The "these 3 or 4 things are optional" part might expand to 6 or 8 things you can choose from.
