New X-Wing Game in Development?

Recommended Posts

Oh god not you to Walsh, is this day like the original Troll day or something?

No trolling on my part Rayla. I haven't heard anything about it either, hence why I was asking if anyone else had heard anything.

Huh... No... I just found out more information regarding it.

It seems in the September 2011 issue of PC Gamer they mentioned it and I just confirmed that there was a job listing for it from LucasArts job posting regarding it at around the same time.

Okay, yeah, first off:

No. This isn't an April Fool's prank. I have more taste than that. Second of all I found reports from PC Gamer, G4, ScrewAttack, and even Gamasutra regarding it. So yeah, apparently last September LucasArts began putting a team together.

Then your buddy is probably trolling you. You should do something horrible in retaliation, like send him an official looking letter telling him that his pension has been revoked.

Wish I knew. Loved all three games from a couple decades back. X-Wing was great. TIE Fighter was even better. And X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter was damn near the best space combat sim ever made.... right after the entire Wing Commander series by Chris Roberts. :)

And yes, if Wedge is the main character in a new X-Wing game that takes place before, during, and after the Battle of Coruscant when the New Republic took it, that would be amazingly awesome. :D

All that said, I'll believe it when it isn't April 1st anymore if anyone can link or point out proof tomorrow that was NOT posted today. :p

If there is a new X-Wing game in development, or going to be, I have a bad feeling it won't be as good.

To sum it up, I'm worried it'll be too "console-y", because it'll need to be a console game or it just won't sell enough*.

*MMOs are exceptions to this "rule".

They really should just update X-wing vs TIE fighter, by update give better graphics, maybe more ships etc. Don't change anything else, and then just re-release it and I guarantee that it'll sell faster then hotcakes.

Hell, they should do this with all the series. Then do the same with most of the older SW games.

In fact the next time Lucas Arts decides to have an RTS made, they should look at Force Commander and Rebellion. EaW should have been those two melded together imo, instead of smashed together with all the good bits that fell off left on the ground. The same goes for any other genre of game they want made.

Still waiting on Republic Commando 2....

That's pretty much my sentiment about a lot of games nowadays though. Losing what makes the original/inspiration for a game worth playing, and creating something subpar and overly simple.

Imagine a jumbo pack that combined the entire X-Wing series into several campaigns in 1 game, using today's technology? Imperial and Rebel campaigns? They kinda sorta did something similar, when they transferred X-Wing, TIE Fighter's DOS-based game / campaigns to use X-Wing vs TIE Fighter's engine. It was done for the X-Wing Collectors Series in 1999.

I remember the last Wing Commander game that was made... It was console only, and practically nothing like any Wing Commander game at all.

Was more like the Battlestar Galactica game for Xbox/PS2, only worse.

Should have mentioned it in my last post, but the above is a prime example of why I fear for a new X-Wing game.

Price of Freedom was the last Wing Commander game, and I have it for PC. At least to the best of my knowledge, it was the last one. It also came out on PS1, but that wasn't the only version.

Man, I would love a Chris Roberts collection of games for Windows 7 with upgraded graphics....

I've got the entire Kilrathi Saga, Price of Freedom, Privateer 1 & 2, and Prophecy + Secret Ops.

After PoF there was Wing Commander Prophecy in 97 iirc, and the DLC episodic mission pack Secret Ops in 98. The Gold Edition of Prophecy came with the Secret Ops episodes as standard, after the download service for them was taken offline due to lack of interest. Too far ahead of their time.

Prophecy still had Maniac (Tom Wilson) and Blair (Mark Hamill), and brought Chief Tech Rachel Coriolis (Pornstar Ginger Lynn) back, as well as Hawk from 4.

You played as the son of Iceman from the first game, Lance Casey, instead of playing as Blair.

Maniac was now in charge of his own squadron, and even wound up going through some attitude changing events!!!

Years later, there was Wing Commander Arena available from Xbox Live Arcade.

Totally different game from all the previous Wing Commander games, and it was set during the Kilrathi War.

Prophecy! Man, I can't believe I forgot that one. And I can't count that XBLA game as real Wing Commander. It's just not happening there. I do believe Chris Roberts has been retired for some years, and his last work was as a consultant on Freelancer.

Actually, the entire Kilrathi Saga was Wing Commander, Secret Missions, Wing Commander 2, Special Operations, Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger, Privateer 1 and 2. Price of Freedom took place after the Kilrathi war, as did Prophecy.

Sounds like the same kind of friend who tells you that artificial sweeteners are safe, WMDs were in Iraq, and Anna Nicole married for love.

A new X-Wing game would be awesome. I was too young to actually understand how to actually play it right when I had it, but looking back with new gaming insight, I would love to have another crack at it. I don't even care if they don't update the graphics.

Meh. Not into the RTS WC. I prefer my hands on stick and throttle as far as space combat goes. :p

Tachyon: The Fringe was also BOSS! And not just because Bruce Campbell was in it. :D

"...Hell, I've still got the shovel around here somewhere." Nice reference there Lyer!

And I could handle a new Star Wars 'flight' sim type game...been too long imo.

Wasn't an RTS.

Was still the same gameplay, with the added bonus of controlling the war against the Kilrathi. Or the Terrans if you played as Kilrathi. It was more of a stand alone game between 2 and 3 iirc.

Was a lot of fun, getting to pilot a cloaking Kilrathi fighter, pulling a loop behind the ship that fired a missile at you, and vaping him from behind!

Be honest though, hearing Bruce Campbell saying "Woah, now that's a big gun" made you grin like a drunk with a full bottle of wine.

Well, considering I play my space combat sims drunk, HELL YEAH! Also, I must have just skipped over Armada since the idiot at Babbage's back in the day said it was an RTS.

Ok, ok. I do PvE in EVE sober, but PvP is beer time!

Also, I would love to pop a Guinness while playing a new X-Wing game. My callsign as always, will be Buzz 1. :D

So a buddy of mine was telling me that there is a new X-Wing game in development. I haven't heard anything about this, but it has me curious. Has anyone else heard anything regarding this?

I recall a job listing for dog fighting at Lucas Arts a while back, no idea where it was. I think it was in the Wookieepedia news.
