Is it worth playing Vanguard in PvP ?

Hi everyone !

I reached level 50 a few days ago, and I immediately began to play in PvP but... I just can't manage to survive properly.

Is it because my gear is bad, and I'll have to wait until I can purchase the PvP gear ?

Or

Is it because Vanguard isn't just PvP material ?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Vanguards are very much pvp material. My vanguard is my main pvp character, and I can pretty much go up against every class in the game. Some classes are a bit harder then others, but its all possible.

lvl 50 pvp is very gear based though. As most lvl 50's will have really good gear with their health jacked up around 16k +. Your spec is also going to matter. I mostly spec into assault specialist, but that requires a lot of kiting, and you'll need to keybind most of your skills.

Vanguards shine in huttball, since they can harpoon the ball carrier, guard their own ball carrier, or be the ball carrier because of their armor and defense, plus their charge skill storm is extremely useful.

Try out these 2 hybrid specs. http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#801ZMsrrobckzZrIMbzh.1

Its a gear thing. Stick with it and buy your centurion and champion gear and you'll see things rapidly improve. Vanguards are great in pvp if you play them right.

You have two lots of daily and weekly quests to complete.

One is pvp warzones, 3 wins for the Daily, 9 for the weekly.

One is ilum, 30 kills or colletions of armaments for the daily, 150 for the weekly. Depending on how ilum is on your server this can be a real pain in the backside to complete.

A daily will get you 1 champion bag, a weekly gets you 3. Each bag contains 15 centurion commendations and 7 champion commendatuions. They may also contain a champion token which is essentially free kit, but they are rare.

Do all your daily and weekly quests and thats 20 bags in a week. or 300 centurion comms and 140 chammpion comms. You should be able to fully kit yourself in pvp gear for that and then you wont be squishy. (man, 300 coms used to be a 100 bags and you never had champion comms, just tokens once in a blue moon - you newbies has it so easy :p )

You can also buy champion bags for 200 warzone comms and 200 mercenary comms. Mercenary comms can by bought for the cost of 30 warzone comms for 10 merc. So 800 warzone comms will get you a champion bag. Or you can try and pick up merc comms from chests in Outlaws Den in Tatooine, though its not a very productive way to do so any more.

It is VERY worth playing Vanguard in PvP. As others said, gear up, it makes a HUGE difference.

Piece of advise for people reading that haven't hit 50 yet but want to PvP: DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOU'RE LVL 50!!!

Lowbie PvP is very fun in my experience so far. You can get decent PvP gear as well that works in PvE too. Also, you can buy one champion bag before you even hit lvl 50, and also have 1000 each warzone and mercenary commendations to spend on 5 more champion bags. Also the Valor, you can be lvl 50 Valor once you hit lvl 50 if you PvP a lot as a lowbie.

So basically, if you don't PvP until you hit 50, you're pretty much selling yourself short. My opinion...

Yes If you get your gear up, and get into a good spec, Vanguard is VERY good in pvp.

We may not post the biggest damage numbers, but if your like me and like to Roam around in warzones looking to pick off some people 1v1, (To keep the enemy team split up and weakend, I'm not on a farming mission, running solo is a form of teamwork too :p) Vanguard is the way to go.

I love my DPS vanguard in a team setting. For solo missions my hybrid tank shadow is much better.

If you are Assault spec, as soon as you fill most of your gear with centurion or better pvp (this could take a week or so) gear you will find that you do very good damage. I cannot comment on tank-mode vanguard other than to say that my assault spec melts them.

Shield Spec VG is an absolute beast in PvP. I often finish first or second in medals earned. In voidstar/alderaan you can single handedly hold a door/turret for a long time against multiple opponents. Throw in a healer and you can take on an entire team of 8 for a short while. In huttball, you are a great ball carrier with all your defensive CDs and trinkets. Close to the goal line, or stuck behind the fire? Storm FTW! Enemy about to score? Harpoon them back. My favorite is harpooning people into the green goo and cryo grenade. Someone knock you into the goo? Pull them in with you and select another enemy and storm out. The list goes on and on.

You arent going to win DPS races, but you should be able to score 75k damage without issues, as you have a plethora of AoE abilities.

Add the damage reduction of taunt/sonic round and you are forcing the other team to attack you or they suffer reduced damage.

I second this. Vangaurd if played right can be a monster. Medals don't matter anymore as of last patch really. WHich is a shame since Vanagurd was flexible enough to get both offensive and defensive medals. But oh well.

It's great fun to pop all your def stuff and just watch the Imps go crazy. You can almost hear them slamming their gamepads and screaming "WHY WON'T YOU DIE!!!!"

What spec is the OP trying to play? Could give some indication why he feels squishy.

If you are Assault, than yes, you'll be squishy no matter what tier gear you have.

You make up for it by melting faces. (You'll have the strongest possible burst of any class, crits considering)

In general you won't have many tools in this spec compared to a hybrid shield build so it really relies on playstyle and what you enjoy.

IMO, go heavy into SS and be a utility player until you get more gear. Then look at a hybrid spec. Ideally, roll with Ion Cell, shield a healer in WZs, and stay within 15m of them while taunting enemies every chance you get. Eyeball your protection numbers, not just your damage.

Hopefully you pvp'd pre-50 and banked some coms?

It's all about the gear at your level. So just keep pluggin away until you can get some decent stuff. And I agree with Mordris, go heavy SS right now.

Absolutely, although I'm not 50. I always mange to get my 3 guard medals in around 10 seconds of combat if I have someone to guard. Kiting proves to be very good in terms of dps and surviving. I have got top dmg multiple times while tanking as well Edited by Mattyatkinson

Favorite thing I did at 50, Made sure I had

1000/1000 merc/wz comms +1, champ bag. To get 6 champ bags.

Hit 50 on a sat, got all my dailies for sat, sun, mon (2 champ bag each day, Daily pvp is get 30 armenments, kills in ilum or wz points. the wz points were added in 1.1.5 to allievate ilum suckiness, though ive always had fun even getting facerolled when under geared. This gives you 3 points per wz win or lose. Second one is 3 wz wins.) Total 6 more bags.

Weeklies in by tues patch, ( first wkly is150 kills or armenments in ilum, or 3 points per wz, second wkly get 9 wz wins.) These provide 2 champ bags and a choice of a champ bag or BM bag. Total 6 more bags.

Wkly, and dailies for tuesday after patch (resets your weekly :D) for another 8 bags

Grand total in just 4 days, 26 champ bags, (which I got no tokens from so far lol,) pretty much fully gets you all cent, with champ MH and OH, not to mention another bag or two for the wz you had to do to get your dailies/wkly done. I dont see why it needs to be easier lol.

Vanguards are a blast probably most well rounded class in the game even with our defenses/shield/absorb bypassed by alot of attacks, which is why some want us nerffed, it is not needed btw lol. You can do damage really good, or you can be a pain in everyones butt by taunting and controlling the wz, while not dying.

We may not post the biggest damage numbers...

According to the forums I've been scouting Vanguards have the most impressive single target damage I've seen so far, after Watchman Sentinel/Annihilation Marauders.

Well tbh it was in the BH/PT forums, Pyro spec. Yours is called Assault Specialist I think.

Check out the BH forum for youtube videos where they kill ppl in 3x 5k crits in a row.

Becuase people want those 26 bags in an afternoons work instead of 4 days :p;)

Though that's impressive you went through 26 bags and got no tokens.....

Liking Vanguard so far for PvP, though I'm not at 50. My trooper's fairly resilient and I can tank / guard someone to take some heat off them. Also, when attacking, I can still move around and be mobile for most of my main attacks. That mobility on offense or defense is great, IMO. It's not like being rooted in place for charge ups or something, and then getting knocked back and seeing that ability on a cooldown... Curious to see how my Vanguard holds up at Lv40+.

Just a word of warning. Lower level PVP players get HUGE bonuses for life/damage etc... Once you hit upper levels those start going away rather quickly. So while you will be leveling and upgrading gear, weapons, etc... you might feel like you aren't gaining in PVP.

Becareful when you hit 50 too. The gear difference is huge and you'll absolutely get rocked if you don't plan it right.
