Very Disappointed about Vanguard Adv Class

Vanguard, Advanced class definition :

Unstoppable and utterly fearless, Vanguards are the first and best line of defense in the Republic military.

- Class Role: Tank, Damage

- Weapon: Blaster Rifle

- Armor : Heavy

- Resource: Energy Cells

 

I just reach lvl 31 and i have to say that this class is boring as hell (compared to my other chars), when i first saw the description, i never realized that i was rolling on a melee class.

 

If i wanted to have a melee class i would have picked a jedi/sith Warrior Or Shadow/Assassin, i picked the vanguard because i thought it will be diferent, but all specs are based on melee/10 yard attacks, i dont see the point of having a blaster rifle if you only use it to hit with the butt of it.

 

Low levels Rotations use too much Auto Attack if u want to keep Ammo (I dont know about high lvl, but leveling a class using mainly Auto Attack is not fun).

 

Also low lvl heavy armor gear looks like cloth, wich is very anoying till you reach lvl +20

lol the part about auto attacking is funny. Your going to have to use your "auto-attacks" so you can keep your ammo full, there is no way around it, spamming special's will make your ammo run low, gotta play smart man.

Not really. I love my Vanguard, and what was that part about auto-attacks about? This game doesn't have an autoattack.

 

Well someone bumped this awful thread. Guess I might as well respond before it falls off this forum.

 

Listen, OP guy... you know there are three trees right? Try spreading those points around into ranged abilities if you like ranged combat more.

 

The rest is all about learning to play your class better and managing your ammo.

 

If having one melee attack is still to much for you, I guess it's your fault for not finding out more about a class before you played it.

There is no auto attack. If I press nothing my person will stand there and do nothing. Auto-Attack would mean that once I was engaged in combat my character would shoot every few seconds (depending on the attack speed of the weapon) even if I do nothing.

 

Now what each class does have is an attack that consumes no energy/ammo/force whatever your class uses.

come on you know hes talking about hammer shot, hes already said so.

I got a Lvl 20 Van, I like it, not as much as tech BH which plays mean and looks good but as a tank class I still like it now and again.

This post Dont suit trooper forums because that forums talks about troopers quest/history or companions, and my post shares concerns with the bounty hunter powertech also.

Im ok with the tank spec as melee, but why the other 2 specs are melee also? We are talking about a Trooper with a blaster rifle.

Yeah you picked the wrong class bro, the vanguard is a legit mix of melee and ranged abilities. Start off at range, then rush in and bust some ugly faces with your stock strike, before shocking a mother****er to death with your ion pulse. It's a very active play style and not for everyone.

Actually its indicated to be tank/damage dealer.... But its dps is lackluster. Imo don't play a vanguard if you dont want to tank or only pvp. As pve dps it definitely leaves something to be desired

I actually agree with the OP that the reliance on melee for Vanguards (and Operatives/Scoundrels, for that matter) was a big letdown after assuming they were a ranged class.

 

Ditto on agreeing that it's sort of a surprise that the guy with the rifle can't really tank from range--that it's all about running up into someone's face and keeping their attention, which means you're pretty similar to every other tank. The amount of irrelevant drivel in the other replies here is annoying--who cares about auto attack, pvp, or whatever else. This is not a ranged tank. It's a melee tank that comes from a ranged class, somehow. Which is fine if they just handed you an electrostaff to go with your blaster or something. Having a rifle is weird. Especially since you spend half your rotation using the wrong end of it.

 

I do have fun with it, but the OP's concern is legitimate.

 

The real thing of it is that, the way it plays against weak mobs is cool--you lay down mortar, charge in, and kick *** while everyone is dazed. It feels like a blitz or storming a position--and works great. But against anything tougher, it becomes this assinine action movie fist fight where you stick your gun up something *** and pull the trigger a bunch, and when that doesn't work, you punch it. Which is the dramatically appropriate move, but not a different playstyle.

 

So I think there's a good point being made here. Why have 3 flavors of melee tank? A ranged tank would be an interesting idea. Maybe still work the mob positioning stuff and threat with some kind of decoy/temporary droid pet thing on a short cooldown.

well, dont like the vanguard being melee?? Reroll. Dont like what you Rerolled?? try it about 16 times.... still unsatisfied?? please dont play this game. and vanguard dps is NOT lackluster, like every other class, once you get your rythym down, your on right on par, and balanced....

 

 

im sure the only problem with your vanguard, is User Error. because mine works Great!!

The OP wasn't talking about his DPS being low or the Vanguard sucking complete ****. Its about him not wanting to play a melee tank class with a RANGED weapon.

how about, check out a few youtube videos of a (range of levels, or at least higher) class before commiting to it? i did... helped me... i got what i was expecting =p

Because its hard for most readers to believe that the OP was both completely set on playing a ranged class, but unconcerned enough that he did not bother doing even the most simple research before picking his AC. Seriously, a quick glance at the skill trees for vanguard reveal that shockstrike, ion pulse and/or gut are going to be your most frequent attacks. while a quick glance at the commando tree reveals a bunch of abilities with "Range: 30m".

 

Besides, this is Star Wars. If there is one thing we know from all the previous movies, cartoons and video games, its that shooting a blaster at a guy waving a glowing wand around is just a good way to get yourself killed by a reflected shot. And that's assuming he doesn't just decide to do an amazing acrobatic leap across some impossible distance and slash you to bits. You think the Republic Military never noticed? It's in the training manual to whack those guys in the face with a rifle butt and laugh maniacally while doing so.

It is a range class, and tanking is probably best executed at close range. Tactics and Assault Specialist could be done effectively at Long range but maybe at end game, try commando OP. Tank Vanguard is awesome and taking hits like a truck is fun and if you get used to that you maybe not like commando because you go down fast with big pulls. Experiment with classes even tho you chose this class doesn't mean you should stick with it of you don't like it.

Vanguard is great, even though you wield a rifle for several reasons. You have the option of using Hammershot for ranged aggro rather than being forced to move towards a mob for melee damage. Great for tanks.

For the dps lines it's still a great option of having a range for closeins or if you are rooted or forced to kite. Utility at it's best.
