Hi everyone,

I know we’re coming up on the weekend, so I wanted to update this thread with what’s happening regarding this issue.

First, thanks to everyone who is supplying info for us and answering the questions the team has. It’s helpful in their investigation into this issue.

Second, a fix has not been determined as of now, however, please know that this is a priority for the team.

Third, the team has requested that DxDiag files be sent to communitysupport@swtor.com. Please only send in files if you are impacted by the issue of not being able to get past the loading screen. And be sure to include your account name!

If the team needs additional info, I will update this thread again.

Lastly, we understand that the players impacted by this problem have not been able to get into the game since 7.4.1 went out, and we are working on plans to compensate those players. This will be executed after a fix has been made and deployed.

Thanks for your patience everyone!

How does one access their DxDiag files?

Well, one possibility is that the corrupted file is specific to the account, which would explain several things:

1. Why creating a new account would not cause the same problem.

2. Why logging on to a different computer would not cause the same problem (because that computer wouldn't have any files related to that account on it).

However, since one of the users stated that they bought a relatively brand new computer with good specs but it didn't work, then that makes a muddle of it, unless they transferred their hard drive and all their data over into the new computer as part of the update.  Then the corrupted file would have been carried over.

The one thing we didn't do that worked for someone else was a deep clean program which goes much further than just uninstalling the progam folder and app data folders.  There are probably some other folders or settings that I am overlooking that aren't stored in the folders we cleared out in our experiments.

@ryuteki if you are referencing my post about when I got my new PC yesterday - I purposely DID NOT transfer anything from my old PC with what you said here being in mind. But I wonder if when I downloaded the game from swtor.com and entered my credentials to begin the installation from the launcher screen if that pulled my accounts files from on to my computer... Now in hindsight I wonder if I should have just created a new account to download the game first, then after seeing if I could play a new account,... then attempt to login with my account. But from the large number of others in this thread with relevant posts about making new ones and comparing the results I don't think I would have had success. I truly think its something I (we) could really only access or change in game. 😑

It seems to be if you have a computer with Intel graphic cards with only 128MB dedicated vram AND trying to log into a server or last logged into a server where you have lots of characters. Exact number of characters not known but somewhere between 9 and 26 characters on the server freezes the game at the loading screen.

Is there anyone having trouble logging in who has more than 128MB VRAM? I'll  see if I can find an old laptop to test on. I probably don't own any.

Okay... update.  My main server is Star Forge.

Got on my wife's Ryzen laptop and logged into my subbed account... able to get to character select (which defaults to Star Forge since that's where I always play).  I went back to sever select and went to Satele Shan, where I have one character.  I logged in on that character... then logged out, so that would now be my default character.

Went back to MY computer (which is hanging on the key art) and logged into my subbed account... got past the key art and it went straight to my character on Satele Shan. I'm able to login and play that character on Satele Shan.

Logged out and went back to server select and picked Shae Vizla... have a dozen (all level 1) chars there.  Can log in fine.  Went back to sever select and picked Star Forge (I have 22 chars there).  As soon as I click "play" (or whatever the button says, I wasn't paying attention), the key art splash screen appears and the game freezes.

Could it be something related to the Star Forge server?  What server does everyone here play on (or last logged out on?  since that's where it attempts to log you into when you launch the game).

This is NOOOOOT an issue my VRAM or graphics settings or firewall or whatever... stop telling me its my computer.

@Keirowyn, I can get into Star Forge on my computer (Intel HD integrated graphics) and get playing, so it has to be an account issue for certain players.  I was on it yesterday until my game got intermittently cut off by our own (house) crappy internet connection.  It took until today late afternoon for it to be resolved and I haven't tried going in yet again, but I'll bet dollars to donuts that I can get in just fine.  which royally p***** @KeiralynHalcyon off immensely because she can't get into her subbed account.  I'm also subbed atm.

@JackieKo, @KeiralynHalcyon is so fed up and irritated with not being able to access her account right now and she's not familiar with the technical aspects of dealing with pulling out a DxDiag.  So I told her how and asked her to send her DxDiag to me and I'll send it to you.

This is @KeiralynHalcyon's DxDiag information below.

@NikkeiSimmer's DxDiag - Thought you might want to do a side-by-side comparison with the DxDiag of someone who can access their account and play.  @KeiralynHalcyon is my wife and we play on the same internet connection.

I have no problems accessing my account and playing.  I have over 20 characters in my account on Star Forge.

I do not understand why I can get on and why my wife is having problems with her subbed account?  This CANNOT be a graphics problem.  This CANNOT be a hardware issue.

Okay more information from me. If you read my previous posts you know I have a subscriber account, a preferred account and a new free-to-play account. I also have a desktop computer and a laptop computer. I have had no problems logging into all 3 accounts on my desktop. I have not been able to log into my subscriber or preferred accounts on my laptop (Intel 128MB graphic memory) even though it worked fine prior to the latest update. I could log into my newly created free-to-play account on my laptop with no problem.

With the new discussion today about character numbers I went and logged into my preferred account on my desktop and instead of logging into Satele Shan where I have 26 toons, I logged into Shae Vizla where I only have 2 characters. I then switched to my laptop and was able to get into the game on my laptop on my preferred account for the first time since the update.

I then tried it with my subscriber account. Logged into my subscriber account on my desktop, chose Shae Vizla again where I only have 4 characters and then switched to my laptop. And again I was able to get into the game on my laptop on my subscriber account.

I then switched to Star Forge on my laptop which has 8 characters and shut down the game and tried to get back in. I was able to get into the game. I then tried to switch to Satele Shan where I have 50 characters while on my laptop and it would not load the character select screen on Satele Shan.

So it appears from my testing if you have 8 or less characters on a server you should be able to log into that server. I haven't been able to get into my preferred account on Satele Shan which has 26 characters so the character limit that prevents the login is somewhere between 9 and 26.

So now it appears to me this in not an account related issue (subscriber/prefrred/free-to-play). It seems to be if you have a computer with Intel graphic cards with only 128MB dedicated vram AND trying to log into a server or last logged into a server where you have lots of characters. Exact number of characters not known but somewhere between 9 and 26 characters on the server freezes the game at the loading screen. I have been able to successfully get into the game on my laptop on a server with 8 characters.

On SS where you have the most toons, can you get in, and switch your most recent toon t something with no fancy outfits, pref low level.

Then log out and try again on the laptop

So, after dropping internet, and reconnecting, then tabbing out and back in, I was able to get into the satele shan server (I have ten toons there, but my highest is 19, and level 1 legacy) I was able to log on and play my characters like normal.

The server select window did show -1 for each one though for character count, so I'm not 100% sure why it let me in this time, where it didn't last time.

I was able to back out to the server select screen, and this time it shows the correct number of characters per server. I was also able to log into the Leviathan, and play the one lone character I have there.

However, when I went back to the server select screen and tried to log into Star Forge, it got stuck on the loading screen again with the issue.

This worked for me! It's not a complete fix but by following these instructions I was able to play on all the servers except my main server(Star Forge as well)  So I know I am able to get into my system.  I am able to get into my account I am just not able to get into Star Forge. My Tulak Horde even has 9 characters in it and I was able to play in that one as well, it was just Star Forge that has many that gave me the blocked Splash Screen.

I was lucky and did happen to have an old laptop in my collection that has an intel with 128MB dedicated VRAM. It took a couple hours to download everything and update as it's running at a snail's pace.

Started the game, it appears to be frozen on the Heta loading screen.

  • 37 toons Satele Shan (last played)
  • 12 toons Star Forge

Okay I was able to get past the Heta loading screen on my crappy laptop. Here's what I did: after logging in to the launcher (steam version btw) I clicked play and quickly unplugged my ethernet cable and was able to quickly get through the Heta loading screen, then I entered sleep mode with my laptop for a few seconds while plugging in my cable and after coming out of the sleep mode the character count on the server browser was displaying -1 on all servers.

I'm trying this on my test laptop. After sleep mode, the game crashes. Does it need to be in exclusive fullscreen mode?

Edit:

turned on Fullscreen mode. Discovered sleep mode not needed. After plugging the ethernet back in, and doing an alt+tab out and in a couple times, the window froze for a bit and when it finished I could see the  servers with the -1 character counter. This seems to work since Fullscreen mode causes the game to do some kind of soft reload every time you lose and gain back focus.

Was able to successfully get into Darth Malgus and Star Forge. It froze when trying Satele Shan where I have 37 toons,

Broadsword should hopefully have a good amount of test data to figure this out since we seem to have identified the condition that's causing trouble.

(I also know that I've probably got at least one character, if not two or three, in each stronghold I have on Star Forge. That's where I usually log off)

Yeah, this worked for me as well ,, I am afraid to try SF (my main also lol) but l have been able to check the other servers,a little laggy on SS and I  have between 10 and 18 toons on each server.

Ok pushed the button tried SF and a familiar chill came over the room

locked up:(

In terms of number of characters, the more I think about it, the more I believe it's not the *number* of characters, but how complex they are: loadouts, outfits, equipment, combat styles, level, history, missions, etc.   All those bits of data add up.

One thing that I haven't seen anyone mention is if they were able to log in on a good computer, create a simple level 1 character on the same server they are having trouble with, and then log out with that toon as the currently selected toon.  Then see if they launch.  That would determine if it's a server load with all the toons (which is likely) or just the last toon used.

Are there fellow SWTOR still having trouble with the freeze loading screen? I try everything still no luck. I'm sure (or) I'm hoping that there still trying to fix the problem. This is getting very frustrating going on day five.

I wanted to document this here, as well. It seems to be in all clear here, yet the loading screen seems to still be problematic. I will be sharing the information in the appropriate format to the email Jackie Ko listed, too.

I'm not sure if Support are responding to Y'all atm given it is now Saturday...

can they change your "most recent character" on the problem server using their backend tools ?

to one with no special armour / dyes / etc

On the laptop I'm using to help troubleshoot this, my level 80 on Starforge with Cartel Market gear and dyes works fine. It seems to be related to the number of toons on a sever in combination with VRAM. I have 12 on Star Forge, and it worked fine after forcing the game to the server screen. When automatically going to to Satele Shan or manually selecting the Satele Shan server, it freezes. I have 37 toons on Satele Shan.

I'm seeing 128MB VRAM on that screenshot, which seems to be one of the puzzle pieces to this problem

For what it's worth, I transferred one of toons to Star Forge. It's now level 80, and has Cartel Market gear. Since it was transferred, it pretty much has a cloned legacy as my Satele Shan legacy. The server and the toon work just fine. Tomorrow, what I can try is flooding my Star Forge legacy with a bunch of level 1s and see if I can induce the problem.

In terms of number of characters, the more I think about it, the more I believe it's not the *number* of characters, but how complex they are: loadouts, outfits, equipment, combat styles, level, history, missions, etc.   All those bits of data add up.

This might be relevant. I'm curious whether anyone having this bug is either A. NOT having the issue with a second server that has >17 characters (since that is the lowest number I've seen quoted as being a problem) or B. IS having the issue with a server they have <15 characters on (the highest number that worked for me. If anyone is in either of these situations that might rule out the number alone being a problem.

I can't test your suggestion, unfortunately, I am poor and only have this one computer with integrated graphics. But I agree it's worth trying even if it probably isn't causing the issue.

The issue seems to be related to number and/or complexity of characters and character data, not subscription status itself. Being a subscriber (or having been one in the past) lets you create more characters. And Stefan and I proved that we can still log into other servers as subscribers, just not our main servers where most of our characters, items, and game progress are. So unsubscribing alone is probably not going to get you back into SWTOR as you will still have the same characters.

Yes, I am still having the issue too. They said they are trying to fix it, but it is currently the weekend so a fix likely won't happen until Monday at the earliest. For now, email them your DxDiag files and wait (or use the internet connection trick to play on another server for now if you want).

The game is still stuck on the loading screens for me on both computers. I've already changed the graphics settings to low, and 1 computer has AMD Radeon while the other has Intel graphics cards.

Eh... the character I last played on my account is wearing one of the oldest cartel market sets in the game... the Destroyer armor.  There's nothing high-end about that armor set.

The character I last played on my account is wearing the old ass Destroyer armor set. That thing has no fancy textures or anything...

But I just got on my wife's Ryzen laptop and made a new char on Star Forge, then logged out.  Still hangs on the key art when I try to log in on my laptop.

I have 48 characters on Star Forge but I have no issues logging in. I do have a quite powerful computer though. I also helped a friend test on my computer and he was able to login without any issues.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION HERE:

We then logged into each character and checked the use gear as outfit option instead of the outfit (he had 26 characters). He was then able to log in on his laptop with integrated graphics. I hope this works for others and also gives insight to the developers to fix this for everyone.

I have 18 characters on Shae Vizla... can log in just fine.

I have 23 characters on Star Forge (my main server)....one is a level 1 I just created as a test.  I also got on my wife's Ryzen laptop and got on one of my level 80s, who is wearing the Destroyer armor.  Added a new outfit and clicked "use gear as outfit".  Still cannot log in if he's my last played character... same with the level 1 character.

If I last played a character on a different server (Shae Vizla or Shatele Shan), I can log in and play on those other servers.  If I last played a character on Star Forge (or attempt to select Star Forge after logging onto another server).... it freezes on the splash screen.
