State of the game: Maintenance-mode and milking whales?

I remember a discussion a few years ago about how it would look like if this game dies.

Consens was it would be maintenance mode and milking the last users.

Now what we have is gamebreaking buggs that are left unfixed for months (10+ people per team in a warzone exploit),

we have incredible big disparity between endgame damage in pve (sniper - sorc). But what really convinced me that we are in maintenance mode is that leaderboards have not been updated for over a week, so they cant even manage a webpage. A webpage.

I doubt they cant, i think they dont give a ****.

Another clue is 60+$ items for direct sale, whoch sounds a lot like "milking the last users" to me.

So what do you guys think, will swtor survive the summer?

Since they are coming out with new content as we speak I wouldn't call it maintenance mode at all. As for "milking" anyone... You are not qualified to judge what something is worth to me or anyone else. And yes, I do think it will survive the summer...

I feel you are right, but the dates are off. It will last another 2 or 3 years until Disney unveils it's new Star Wars mmo.

This single OP stretched out for an entire year, pretty much says everything.

OP I think it depends on your definition of survive. As far as I am concerned the game didn't really survive 4.0 and 5.0 and thus why I have unsubbed.

I do think the game will be online well past the summer, but not at a standard many would hope to see. While some will point to the new content coming forward, but honestly to me it is a pathetic attempt to fill a gap that should have been filled months ago. Compound that with the gearing issues the past two months and it all is really too little too late.

Not to mention the trust they have destroyed with so many of the founding players. I don't know if that can ever be rebuilt.

Only after they were publicly called out by their MMO veteran player base and the press 3 months ago. We'll be lucky if Iokath is the size of Ziost. And announcing the release of one boss every 2 months on top of short 2+ Uprisings - when competing MMOs like WoW have all released entire expansions with more explorable worlds and more group content since last Halloween than SWTOR has seen in 3 years - is nothing to be proud of.

December's rebellion temporarily took the MMO part of this game out of maintenance mode. They did it to save face and what they've announced will never be enough compared to what this game once provided, which is what those SWTOR MMO veterans this fire drill was designed to placate will expect.

As for milking ... pulling items out of the game that players used to be able to farm for and putting their equivalents up for sale instead is milking. Adding new blind grinds to a system so reviled that it caused the biggest player rebellion since the SWG NGE update, and then charging players to be able to advance through it at a normal pace, is milking. Milking is a legitimate and applicable business term in this case. There is no judgement involved.

I'll give the game 2 years until those whales, who pay handsomely to cuddle Ken, Barbie and stronghold customs that will disappear from their gaming world forever, are all that's left. I know how they will feel before too long. I used to be one of them, so I think I'm qualified:

I took out pretty much everything except Cartel Coin purchases and monthly Subscriber & Security Key grants because of a "The text that you have entered is too long (80527 characters). Please shorten it to 50000 characters long" error. Hence all the snips. :o

The vast majority of purchases were in support of myriad aspects of the game that were either put into maintenance mode or removed entirely when 4.0 released. To highlight this I added the dates and names of each expansion to the timeline. I'm wondering if my contributions that diminished beginning with 3.0, then fell off a cliff with 4.0, reflects the game's decline in microcosm?

BWA has zero loyalty to their player base and I feel sorry for the current whales who blindly believe otherwise. No PR stunt, no amount of damage control livestreams, no increase in staff coming out into the forums and rubbing elbows with select groupies on inconsequential and cherry picked topics ... nothing short of a full about face to its MMORPG roots will change where this is headed.

What's worse? 30-35 bucks for a 1 in 5 chance to win the item with some random crap as a consolation prize or 60 bucks for a 100% chance to get your item?

To be honest, milking players started when the cartel packs started coming out. It's not a new development.

What is real is that with each expansion we got less and less new content added, particularly 4.0 and 5.0. So for them to bring new content out next month is a step in the right direction. Let's just say I hope they rethink what they've done with the last 2 expansions and choose a new direction.

I really want more from 6.0 than just a new story line I play through 2-3 times and a handful of uprisings. Too much effort was put into a Jedi Knight story that doesn't fit other classes that well or not at all and an endgame gearing system that everybody could see from miles away that it wasn't going to work and then needs more dev time to undo.

But does that make it maintenance mode? The last 2 expansions did give me that impression but they seem to be waking up to the fact that the game needs more actual new content to keep enough players. So we'll see. But the CM sales are not a new development. Just a different way that makes transparent how much people have been ripped off with the cartel packs.

This game died 2 years after it was released, when the beta apps went out it had 1.5 millions applications, since then server merges, F2P, and now this epic story that is quite frankly 2 hours of game-play rinse repeated on multiple characters......

Its not going to die, it already has, It has at best 150-200k players globally, tbh i doubt even that.

It had tremendous potential 5 years ago and has been on a downhill slide ever since, substituting interesting, tactical, strategic, player involved star warsey game-play for micro-transactions and endless mind numbing grinding....

Don't get me wrong, it looks pretty, and i suppose playing through the story on a few new characters to new players is interesting, but the game has nothing to keep a player here day after day after day paying a sub. Its a quick 3-6 months of play then off to the next game...

House building is weak

Star-fighter is terrible

PVP is shocking

Explopration is non existent

Character development is lacklustre

There is actually nothing EPIC about it at all....

And to top it all off as the OP states, everything about this game now, is EA milking your money.....90% of the stuff in the CM should be available in the game to fight for, win, find, or loot.........Good games make you play for cool items..........Terrible ones make you buy them.....Go play LOTRO and see what you can buy in the store compared to what you can EARN in game...Then you will understand how a store should be run, how a story should pan out and how maps should be exportable not walled off tunnels, filtering you to where you want to go.

I honestly agree with you, which is why I am only paying my sub until the big expansion for ESO comes out. Then I am done. These devs dont give a hoot about the playerbase. If they did they wouldnt have created Galactic crapquest. And they would release content that caters to all players , to lure in new players all around. But instead we get 1 expac ( if you can even call it that ) per YEAR, and alienate all but one player base.

right... what i dont get is why the people saying its dead or that they hate it are still here... i wouldnt buy a product i hated personally. As for myself... i am much happier with where the game is now then when it started (and i was a founder myself) which is why i took a hiatus after RotHC was launched. So atm im happy to play the game with a great bunch folks in my guild and pay my monthly subscription... i completely understand those that say the game is no longer for them... it happens... but why the constant complain threads. Shelf the game at least until such a time you think its worth your money again (if ever) ... thats what i did a couple of years back and even with WoW way back when (didnt like the direction of the game after Lich King was launched and havent played the game since). The devs dont owe me (or any of you) anything... that is the long and short of it. Edited by Valceanu

Because as December's rebellion proved ... it makes a difference. Until BWA comes right out and tells their MMO player base that this game is no longer for them, and that they need to look elsewhere for their sci-fi MMO fix, the rebellion will only continue to gain energy and support. Recluses who don't like the disturbance are probably better served taking that up with Bioware just like we are. Edited by GalacticKegger

ahh... so its a case of the vocal minority fudging it up for everyone. Guess thats in line with everything else the millennial generation is attempting to "revolutionize" out in the world...

I shelved it with 4.0 to 5.1. Came back when they announced new Ops. To the OP it appears more low budget mode than maintenance mode.

Probably too late to turn the tide budget wise. I'll be here as long as Ops are a focus. If they go solo focus again this game will go back to the HDD or external storage

I feel you are right, but the dates are off. It will last another 2 or 3 years until Disney unveils it's new Star Wars mmo.

Given current trends, it won't be an MMO. MMOs have gone to more of a niche thing, rather than the big releases they used to be. If Disney pushes a new Star Wars multiplayer game, it will most likely be a MOBA.

So what do you guys think, will swtor survive the summer?

Yes but it won't be healthy especially if this new raid can't compete with other games like wow raids.

Also if iokath is the last major content patch players will slowly start to melt away.

The Dragon Age and Mass Effect games created a brain drain of Bioware's most talented individuals who made everything great up until the Shadow of Revan (2014). I'll keep repeating it was these SWTOR whale's that generously gave to their game in way of cartel coin purchases only to find their money was re-routed to other Bioware projects or even worse EA.

They don't even seem to have funds to consolidate their dead servers like POT5, Jung Ma, & Begeren Colony into half dead servers like JC and Shadowlands. This should've been done back in 2016.........................

Going one step further I'm not buying any new Bioware products after playing this as I feel anyone who's spent over $1000 dollars in cartel packs should be getting these games free..........

It's simply a case of long time SWTOR MMO veterans getting in Bioware's face to stop diminishing the MMO part of their game. (Yes ... it's just as much their game as it is yours or mine.) Millennials or not, if they were indeed the minority then their points were valid enough for BWA to call 4 emergency PR damage control livestreams within 8 weeks of 5.0's release to save face. But if millennials are willing to take it upon themselves to revolutionize the world ... I simply hope they do so with ethics, integrity and the greater good in mind. I have nieces and nephews doing just that and it's wonderful to see.

As to whether or not those wascally SWTOR MMO veterans are fudging things up for everyone, we'd need everyone's individual take on that as no one individual can speak for everyone.

By definition you are incorrect. http://imgur.com/chBjmou

There is more content coming with plans announced through Dec. The Devs are trying to listen.

The high price of the lightsaber is to not upset people who spent a fortune on packs to get it and to keep it a rare item. I have been petitioning as have others for direct item sales. the packs are crap. I think this is their attempt to listen. Milking a cash cow would be more packs.

And no I didn't buy it. Too expensive for me. Id rather buy the new mass effect game if I could but my 6yr old wants a birthday party instead.

What I don't get is why the current dev team is still here...I wouldn't work on a product that I hated, personally. They clearly have no love for the core of this game, so what exactly are they sticking around for?

The core of the game is the Story, and they've put out 25 chapters of it over the last two years with the story continuing in the upcoming Daily Area on Iokath.

If you follow them on Twitter you would see that they do love the game and star wars and I agree with this quote.

Depends on from where one sources the definition:

"Maintenance mode, the point in an MMO’s life where the patches and new content slow to a trickle or stop completely."

"A great MMORPG in declared maintenance mode that utterly refuses to accept its fate and keeps right on patching and patching and patching, with events and new content and everything. What is dead can never die."

There is more content coming with plans announced through Dec. The Devs are trying to listen.
In addition to a new class, full-time weeks of lore story with an emphasis on cutscenes to mirror the movie's flavor, and an entire continent with 5 zones the size of Alderaan that takes weeks just to explore the surface ... here is a list of group content additions that WoW's expansion has given us since last fall:

New 5-man Legion Dungeons

  • Assault on Violet Hold (duplicated and updated, the original remains intact)
  • Black Rook Hold
  • Court of Stars
  • Darkheart Thicket
  • Eye of Azshara
  • Halls of Valor
  • Maw of Souls
  • Neltharion's Lair
  • Return to Karazhan (raid duplicated as a dungeon and updated, the original remains intact)
  • The Arcway
  • Vault of the Wardens

New World Boss raids and the tier pieces they drop

  • Ana-Mouz - Chest
  • Calamir - Feet
  • Drugon the Frostblood - Wrist
  • Flotsam - Hands
  • Humongris - Shoulder
  • Levantus - Hands
  • Na'zak the Fiend - Legs
  • Nithogg - Head
  • Shar'thos - Chest
  • The Soultakers - Waist
  • Withered J'im - Head

New Full Raids (3 tiers worth)

  • The Emerald Nightmare
  • The Nighthold
  • Trial of Valor

By comparison here is what we got since 5.0 dropped:

New 2+ Uprisings

  • Done and Dusted
  • Firefrost
  • Crimson Fang
  • Inferno
  • Fractured
  • Trench Runner
  • Destroyer of Worlds
  • Divided We Fall
  • Landing Party
  • Trial and Error

No new open worlds to explore. No new story. Just these and Galactic Command. As soon as we get something even remotely similar to what the "standard" is I will believe in BWA's commitment.
