They just took what WoW did in Cata and applied it here.

This.

However, i'm pretty happy with this change and convinced that it's for the good of the game. As a long-term WoW player i've experienced the same conversion firsthand. At first, i had my doubts just like some other people in this thread, but in the end i never had any regrets about it.

First time ever i have to say... swtor have copy WoW :(

Why exactly copying WoW is a bad thing? They have many great features over there and it's only for the good of this game if BW adopts some of them (since this game is of the same type as WoW).

I'm going to pitch in my dislike for this proposed change as well.

Both I and many friends run hybrid specs in PVP and general PVE, the cloned specialisation system from WOW was one of the reasons I stopped playing that game and came to SWTOR.

Please stick with the skill trees.

This is a good thing because I always enjoyed picking my spec at level 10 and being given a bundle of skills and passives to help me learn my spec and auto learn the rest as I level up.

Is unbelievable. I am very concerned, will the game be fun again

One grows accostumed to a certain progression and playstyle and you decide to completely change it? This level of madness I only have see in SWG, and when they did change so much the game play, the game broke and closed within months

I am very disappointed and worried

WOW did this with the Cata expansion, which we all know lost them a huge amount of player base.

They basically chopped entire skillsets and created new rotations from scratch without even asking the playerbase!

No. That's not what they did at all.

Read the announcement. They kept the core abilities, made the peripheral abilities optional so you could pick and choose. Example: Marksman Sniper still has Diversion and Followthrough, but they are "forced" on you, and you get the option to pick whether you want (guessing at examples) a longer Entrench, or better defense during Entrench, stronger frag grenades or a quicker Adrenaline Probe.

Yes, it will change rotations, but only in small ways. Any player claiming to be skilled should have no problems making that adjustment.

LOL over react much?

What it sounds like to me is they are FINALLY DOING what a huge percentage of us told them to do in closed beta

Allow players to design their own classes ala KotOR 1 and 2 style

So it will not be solid cookie cutter classes and hybred classes will increase

Personally Im thrilled about this change (but need more info to be 100% sure)

What Im not thrilled about is 12x xp boost cause I have been putting a insane number of players on ignore for not understanding the most basic part of their classes already (because they level so fast)

12x xp boost is just going to grow that number 12x fold

and thats NOT GOOD FOR GAME

It's actually a GREAT GREAT change and switches up a lot of things and gives you more choice and freedom in the end. It's more "kotorish" and feels like you have more things to do to surround you character with. They will keep on evolving the core gameplay as the game keeps growing and getting better. This is just the beginning! Imagine the possibilities. It's a great idea and I'm glad they decided to implement it. Even more reason why SWTOR is the greatest mmorpg ever. Keep on the lookout for more of this type of stuff to change core elements and make it better as the game matures. ;)

Here is my problem - who decides what the standard build is?

The player base. BioWare knows what talents you have taken, they just needs to examine the game's database to discover the most popular build for each spec in each AC. I think it likely that they do that whenever they are looking at class balance.

Which had nothing to do with why they lost subs.

Not?

Well I and 3 of my mates quit WoW because of this ******** and well WoW lost about 30% players... sure WoW still has 4 times more players than Swtor but with this Swtor no longer is an alternative for WoW players who like the "classic" skilltree system.

It actually doesn't sound like it's going to force everyone to learn a new spec.

It sounds like they've taken the "must have" stuff from the trees and given them to you as you level.

Then they've taken some of the "optional, build to your taste" stuff from the trees and given you a way to get them as you level, too.

So whatever spec you play, the "guts" of it are there for you just because you leveled. You don't even have to click any buttons to take it. You'll still be a tank or a healer or a DD probably with mostly the same core skills and core feel.

You just might have a bit more leeway in getting to the optional stuff that fell outside of the "must have" skills.

I expect to log into my Shadow Tank post-patch, select the set of optional skills I had selected in my talent build, and to be able to play effectively immediately.

That is... if they've implemented it properly. On that, we shall see.

I have to agree with you darth(scary i know). It looks to be a smoother simpler system that will allow everyone to actually get some of the hybrid benefits. more customization of a character = win. we dont even have specifics and people are frightened. I am usually at the front of the bioware bashers association but this time I think they done good. lets see how it works and go from there.

Wow lost those players cause of how hard the end game dungeons were compared to Wrath and the lack of end game stuff to do because most of the developement time was invest in revamping classic azeroth.

- Blizzard did something similar with WOW at one point and it didn't ruin their game.

- Rift also uses this kind of system (though they have been using since launch) and it works very well there.

That doesn't mean it won't screw up the game if they do it badly, but the system can work well and other games have made similar shifts to positive effects.

Well maybe this is also a point, i don't know. But I know that people quit just because of the changes, and for the endgame there will always be "must have" skills for each boss, it doesn't matter if its in a skill tree or disciplin. They only take the options of making hybrids to make balancing easier for them. And for casual players it doesn't matter how the choose they will still be casuals but they normaly enjoy swtor because they like it and not because of the mechanics.

Sure, I like to play with mechanics an see what you can do with them and yeah we respecc for bosses.

I really don't think it will change anything other then you will not be able to cookie cut anymore. The only thing I m wondering is what will be utilities. I think it will be your tier levels but that's just me . So nothing will change other then cookie cutting.

Cheers
