General Chat On My Server Has Descended Into Madness

Not that I think every incidence of swearing should be reported/actioned upon but it is against the game policies that form part of the ToS. Maybe if people actually read them and realise it is then they'll exercise a little more control in chat channels

Profanity isn't very static or objective. You could send in a report saying, "This person used the F-word in general chat," under the premise that it violates the profanity clause of the ToS, but I think most GMs will probably laugh and delete the report without doing anything. *Shrugs*

Yes, you're probably right. If it gets filtered by the profanity filter why would the GM's regard it as profanity...

That said I think the intention of the policy on language use is aimed at profanity used to harass other players, such as insulting them etc although that doesn't mean it wouldn't be used to take action against people just swearing in the chat channels like in WoW.

Too add to what I said....

The way to prevent this is with strong guilds.

SWTOR has done nothing to encourage guilds.

In fact, SWTOR seems to want NO guilds. If they wanted guilds, they would have a proper guild search option.... instead ... the have... nothing.

To one-up other MMO, they could have had a chat tab G and P for Guild and Party - but they didn't. Because this entire game is based on a quick profit and a slow death.

:)

Have fun while it's here.

create custom tabs, call them "guild" and "party" and only enable these channels?

rocket science....

On the first few planets the general chat for me was also unbearable. Obscenities (not just swearing), racism and other filth I just don't want to see. What age is this game? Because unless it's 18 then a lot of people need to start getting warnings for the things they say in general/public channels.

why would you think that? it's against the TOS. the GM will deal with it as per the TOS. any GM worth his salt that is.

thanks to whoever posted the link. i will paste it here and highlight things:

Inappropriate Language and Naming

The Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ Customer Service team prides itself on maintaining a friendly game-play environment. Therefore it is required to provide guidelines for you to follow when chatting with other players in game or when naming your character, Legacy, guild, or any feature that allows a player to choose a unique name that will be visible to other players.

Violations that are inappropriate and can result in a name change and/or game suspension include:

  • Profanity
  • Sexual or obscene/vulgar references
  • Xenophobia or hate speech
  • Violence
  • Harassment
  • Impersonating EA or Bioware employees
  • Gibberish/unintelligible character names
  • References to significant religious, political, or historical figures or events
  • References to drugs or other illegal activity
  • References that violate trademarks, copyrights and other proprietary rights
  • Generally inappropriate

As far as the naming of characters, pets, guilds, items, etc. it is important to remember that BioWare reserves the right to change any name deemed inappropriate at any time, as well as take action on an account based upon any communication that is considered to fall into one of the categories above. Multiple violations of the Terms of Service may result in temporary or even permanent suspension. This policy applies to all languages regardless of what language server the player is playing on.

As you can read above, customer service "Pride themselves" on maintaining an environment free from the listed violations. And repeated violations will result in a ban. Now that I know this, I will be reporting these maggots instead of just setting to ignore.

I've found it varies from planet to planet but yeah some people are just vile but others are fine. It's just one of those things in MMOs. If they are behaving inappropriately (ie against the rules) then report them. Wait for your droid response and hope BW actually get round to acting on it ;)
