Commando as Tank, Vanguard as Medic.

I am just curious if anyone shares my view that the character who carries the cannon, which is sometimes not much bigger than him, should rather be a "tank", and Vanguard take over the role of a combat medic.

When i started to play swtor I had same opinion. Always when saw cannon - ok this is tank or dps. Later I knew truth but it was weird for me to think otherwise. Sometimes still is.

Commando just suit as tank with body 3, and Vanguard just looks perfect with body 2 as healer in my mind.

Well, all I really want is the possibility for my commando healer to have a blaster rifle instead of that ridiculous assault cannon.

Are there any healing abilities that require the cannon? For Gunnery, there are hugely important things that only work if you have a cannon (not sure about Assault Specialist), but I thought someone said that Medic doesn't have anything like that. If that's true, you can, indeed, equip a rifle.

I agree the Tank should carry the autocannon. The medic needs the knife to cut shrapnel out...lol. Plus the autocannon isn't a weapon system that can be used behind cover. So it makes sense to put the Vangaurd out in the open behind a shield as a tank class with an autocannon. Then the Commando can be a medic with an Assault rifle and knife quickly assaulting the enemy and kiting around it's target supporting the Vanguard. And why in all of havoc squad does none of your companions carry an autocannon? Seriously, let's make the squad leader carry the crew serve weapon? If you chose to play as a vanguard, nobody has an autocannon in your havoc squad...lol.

i have the Calamity equipped on my Comm-heal... the class can wear Assault rifles easily, the only skill that are greyed out, are, rocket out and the AoEattack (don t know how Pubs call them)

No, there aren't any healing abilities that require the cannon. I run my Commando with a rifle. It keeps you out of a couple abilities, but since companions are so OP it doesn't really matter for doing dailies and such.

I also despise the cannon. I think it's a cool option, but I don't like that it's a requirement. Same thing for the lightsaber requirements. Why can't a Jedi Guardian use a double-bladed lightsaber?

Maybe it would be enough to give the Commando the ability to use both a Blaster Rifle and Assault Cannons?

Um. They can(1). Of course, on the DPS disciplines there are abilities that don't work, but Commandos *can* use Blaster Rifles.

(1) Technically no, they can't. They have to choose one or the other at any given moment, and cannot use *both* at the same time, but they can use *either*.

propulsion round and hail of bolts yeah. They're not healing skills but they are useful situationally and I just don't like not having them available, especially propulsion round (rocket out). I suppose I could but I just wish that BW would just lift the restrictions on those two skills really. It serves no purpose in the end.

I only use slim and/or small cannons on my commandos and eventually made peace with the cannon situation. For people who don't like these huge cannons, here are some more compact alternatives:

Ordtech F7 (my favourite)

Beryar’s MK-3 (my 2nd favourite)

Grantek F-11D (would be my favourite if it would be shorter)

EL-34 Rotary Plasma

SL-34 Rotary Plasma

Defiant Technographer

Commanding (PvP season 8 reward; unfortunately I don't have it, but it looks great on TOR Fashion)

Kyber :p (just kidding)

I know the thread is different, but I don't see the point in starting a new one. I searched the internet and found information (2 years old) that using a blaster rifle as a commando (medic) is associated with a "lack" of two skills and a small drop in dps. Has anything changed in this topic in current version of the game?

I refer you to the discussions above by flyersfan, Dimitir and Tsillah, which are *recent* and definitely apply to the current version. It would appear that this information is still valid.
