Hey guys, just getting back into SWTOR and I think I made a mistake in a new gaming machine. I purchased the Aorus x3 Plus-CF2 with an 870m but should I have went with the other MSI with a 970m

Will my gaming be significantly different on SWTOR with the older card?

I cant attached pics but the 2 laptops are as linked below. I haven't received the Aorus yet, should I just return immediately?

I learned the hard way when I was younger why a "gaming" laptop was a bad choice. Best thing I ever did was go back to a tower. Going on almost 4 years old now, and quite a few of the original parts still. Upgraded a couple things over the years, but still runs great and plays most games I try at max awesomely.

It was bought to double as a work laptop just something light but powerful. I don't think I realised the difference in the cards. Yes the Aorus is a nicer laptop but is sacrificing the additional SSD and better screen worth an upgrade to the 970?

I have the Msi gs40 one as my main gaming computer and it does really great. However, that other one is really nice as well. I average 100 fps in the open world and about 45 fps in raids/warzones if you want to compare to yours. Edited by Skaara

Yes there is a significant difference. I would have switched

For SWTOR it should not matter at all. If you play more demanding games, it might.

As a rule of thumb, mmo's are never that demanding, since they'd lose out on lots of possible customers. The graphics aren't usually the most demanding part in mmo's. And definitely not in SWTOR...

Hardware requirements are as follow after all:

Processor:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4000+ or better

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz or better

Operating System:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later

RAM:

Windows XP: 1.5GB RAM

Windows Vista and Windows 7: 2GB RAM

Note: PCs using a built-in graphical chipset are recommended to have 2GB of RAM.

Star Wars: The Old Republic requires a video card that has a minimum of 256MB of on-board RAM as well as support for Shader 3.0 or better. Examples include:

ATI X1800 or better

nVidia 7800 or better

Intel 4100 Integrated Graphics or better

So shouldn't be a worry on higher settings either... :rak_03:

If you look in other threads you will see that Swtor is not very graphic card demanding but more the actual processor.

Both the laptops you put there look to be decent i7 quad core. You should have no problems running Swtor.

Saying that, you will still get fps issues. If you expect to run everything at more than 60fps just forget it. I have a little pc monster myself with a gtx 980 and certain operations in 16m, certain wz, even in fleet you will see it drop to 30fps or even less. I play other games like GTA, ESO, H1z1, Battlefront, ... , with 90+ fps and Swtor i do get certain times around 20fps in certain occasions as explained above.

Now if you are thinking of other games, then yes you will see a big difference between those two graphic cards.

I have this laptop :

http://www.medion.com/gb/shop/gaming-laptops-medion-erazer-x7835-laptop-md99121-130018428.html

and the performance is better than a lot of desktops I've used.

It generally sits at 105 fps and but can drop to 85 fps for a few seconds on certain planets.

That is a very nice machine with a good video card...

I suspect a lot of those desktops that you've used didn't have such a nice video card...

Ignore all the fools bashing on gaming laptops. I've been playing on a gaming laptop for a while, and I love it. You can't beat the power and portability that a gaming laptop offers over the clunky massive desktops that are not much more than pretty paper weights.

With that said, you need to return the first one ASAP. The MSI with the GTX 970M will be a lot better, and if you can afford it try and slide into the 980M. But either way, I would return the first, since the graphics card is becoming dated in the laptop world. MSI also has a lot better support, for both hardware and gaming.

Here is your problem:

GeForce GTX 970M 3GB Graphics

Not supported.

Dedicated GTX 870M 6GB Graphics

Not supported.

I have a similar problem. When I realized the conundrum, I went out and built a desktop. Regardless about how you setup your laptop, the graphics card is not fully supported. You will also experience unusual overheating. I ended up buying a cooling table. Whenever I touch the bottom of my laptop, the shell feels as though it will melt.

Where the industry currently stands:

(Until March 2016)

Processor: Intel® - Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz - Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz

(K = unlocked for overclocking)

(i5 = inexpensive/high performance)

(i5-4690K 3.5GHz & i5-6600K 3.5GHz are practically the same chip; however, the 6600k was built for DDR4 RAM.

RAM: 32-64 Gbs DDR3/DDR4

(industry will be pulling away from DDR3 in March)

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 640-950 2GB GDDR5

GTX 640 = bare minimum

3Gbs has already started to become a standard.

I build a i5-4690k over the last few months. Once BestBuy starts selling the i5-6600k bundles, within a few months, I will be building a secondary machine.

Cannonlake, i5-7#### (intel generation seven), is due out in 2016.

Im just curious regarding performance. I will have the Aorus tomorrow otherwise I'll be waiting till mid January for the MSI. I mean will SWTOR run a similar level of performance when using an 870 vs a 970

SWTOR is very CPU dependant, but both laptops have similar quad-core CPUs. The newer model in the MSI would give a few extra FPS, but not enough to really matter.

GPU-wise, the two also have nearly identical GPUs (the 970m is a bit better than the 870m). If the screen resolution of the two was the same, they would perform about the same, but the Aorus has a much higher rez screen, so you'd get lower graphics performance with it unless you run the game at a lower rez like 1920x1080 - but in that case you may get crappy graphics or bad performance anyway, depending upon how well the Aorus can do the down sampling.

Of, course, your FPS may be mostly limited by the CPU anyway, so the Aorus might perform the same with some graphics settings lowered a bit. For example, on the Aorus, you could turn done the Shadows settings and turn off AA. (Given the rez, AA won't make as much difference in the "look")

TL;DR - Of the two choices, I'd go for the MSI, but the difference might not be worth the hassle of returning the Aorus. (I've also never heard of Aorus, so I have no idea of the relative quality of the two.)
