Space combat...good or bad?

what is everyones opinion on space combat? i think they offer us a unique perspective but it lacks the same feel that the rest of the game has.

you have no option which way to go, its like being on a disney ride and just shoot at whatever comes into view.

star trek online or even the old galaxies allows you to pick your direction and let you do what you want.

galaxies offered massive PVP space battles and you have your choice of views, and you get to completely control your ship, its direction of travel and attack, you could attack from top or below, it was a true 3 dimentional combat area.

space combat in this game is very limited and in my opinion not up to the same style of play as the rest of the game. if i want to attack a cruiser or provide just fighter escort, i cant. i have to go where the ship takes me. i cant choose which ship i want to engage. again like being on a amusement park ride, just follow the track and shoot whatever pops up. i cant even pilot the ship to where i want to go, if fact im not even piloting it, well a little to avoid asteriods and other ships but not really. im just along for the ride.

i dont even have the choice of free flight, i cant just fly around the galaxy and take in the sights. i pick a sector and boom im there. space combat lacks any excitment. i was quickly bored of it after 4 missions.

the space mission should be more like the ground missions, choices on what you want to do and where to go, with the graphics and ships in this game, there is so much potential, IM just severly disappointed in this aspect of this game.

please post some ideas and thoughts on what you would like to see space combat evolve into. im curious of more people feel like i do.

i know that all of the players who came here with me from galaxies agrees that space combat here is not what they expected and like myself are dissapointed with it.

so far thats the only major complaint i have with this game, its new and im sure there will be alot of updates and changes over the years to come.

Good for what it is trying to do.

In the long run it needs to get more depth though for people to continue be interested in it.

Surprisingly I personally like it. It offers nice change of pace from questing/flashpoints and I have been doing dailys every day. But like I said, in the long run it needs to have more depth since I bet it will get old at some point.

Space combat has been, and always, will be a rail shooter.

It was a rail shooter during beta where A LOT OF BETA TESTER SAID THAT IT IS A RAIL SHOOTER.

It will continue to be a rail shooter..

It is a rail shooter..

With that being said that it is a rail shooter and it is not going to change.

I like it...

It is a nice little mini/meta game. Nice time waster.

Kudos to you for being able to stomach galaxies long enough for them to put space combat in.

I steered as far away from star trek as I possibly could.

So, unfortunately, I had no idea what to expect out of space combat.

I find I actually enjoy it. It certainly feels like it's a rough draft of the system they plan to have, but it's pretty fun for now. There are a ton of ways it can be improved and I'm sure they're going to improve it.

If you view it as being nothing more than a little minigame on the side, it's OK. The problem is, it shouldn't be a little minigame on the side. Some of the most epic parts of Star Wars canon are to do with space combat (Death Star attacks, for example), so to treat space combat as simply a minor minigame doesn't do it justice, at all.

Eh there are positives and negatives to allowing you to have complete control over the ship. This is more like an amusement park ride instead of a stroll through the park and I like it. I think a death star attack while on a rail is more thrilling than if you were just sitting out in space shooting down on it while dodging projectiles.

I love Star Fox so I like the Space Combat. The only downside is there's no Peppy Hare to offer advice, just a ship full of Slippy's to piss me right the hell off.

"SHIELDS AT MAX"

NO THEY AREN'T gosh darn YOU

Yeah some of the voice clips don't seem to be working right.

Like saying "Shields are down!" when I didn't have any to start with...

Yeah I like when they say incoming when you're 1 second away from jumping to lightspeed and there's no enemies in sight.

But that issues is prevalent in other areas of the game too. Like when companions com back from a mission and say they did an awesome job but they actually failed or say they let you down but succeeded.

Or how Kira calls you her "master" when, in the storyline, she's just tagging along and she's another Master's padawan? It feels like voice clip spoiler...

Space combat is fun, but the instructions need to be clearer.

For example, I had to look online to find out that you recharge shields only when you stop shooting. Another example, I didn't know for a little while that you could lock onto multiple targets with your missiles.

I think for missiles, it mentions that in-game somewhere. I did not however, know your shields only recharge if you're not firing. I assumed they just didn't start to charge until you weren't hit for a little while.

But with it being a rail shooter doesnt it take away your options?

and yes its like star fox, but this is an MMO you should have choices, and dont you think it would be awesome to have a guild cruiser and get into a space battle vs a couple of dozen PVP fighters? or even Cruiser on Cruiser Battles. or hell just fly around and take in the sights.

Space combat is good for what it is, but bad compared to what it could have been if they'd actually spent three seconds listening to their community.

I guess the threads with the tens-of-thousands of people hating on the rail-shooter within hours after it was announced just wasn't enough to convince Bioware that they should try to do it better. I guess they just didn't have time to fix or change it. I mean, it was only like 18 months ago that the community first informed tham that their space combat sucked.

And no, it's not a mini-game. Mini-games don't level your character or give you mounds of credits.

Agree with above. It's fun for what it is and I'm finding that it adds to the overall feel of the game and of my storyline (IA). I actually care about ships gear which I didn't think I would.

Defiantly not SWG space though...then again I'm never going to have to grind to find parts for the perfect RE project either.

This, pretty much.
