Ghisallo
There is a creature called the "bat-falcon" in Star Wars however the only time I have ever seen it mentioned is when people ask where the ship got its name. Basically it looks like a story element created for fans who would ask such a question because Lucas simply wasn't thinking about that kind of stuff when he wrote stuff. I mean why is a light saber called a light saber when the blade is not actually a light/laser and the blade is not the curved blade of a saber? Because it sounded cool. tunewalker
My answer is simpler... they arent speaking english, they are speaking galactic basic, what we hear, is the closest translation of "Galactic Basic".
psandak
Just because the word "falcon" imprints an image in our brains does not necessitate that it has the same meaning in a galaxy far far away. Same thing goes for "parsec." Yes the EU explains that one away too, like Ghisallo suggests, but that does not mean that the EU explanation is correct. In any fantasy setting you have to leave reality at the door or you drive yourself insane picking nits

VixenRawR
because last i checked earth animals aren't in star wars so why is his ship named after one? In the end it's just a movie. Not actually history or fact. If we can't understand it then we won't be able to enjoy it. Why do they speak English? Why do they breathe? Why do they do stuff that make us laugh? How come Liam Neeson didn't pull out a lightsaber to deflect bullets while rescuing his daughter in Taken? Just entertainment...don't get to worked up over it. =) Besides the bat-falcon thing someone said explains it so there. =)
Varium
The spire falcon was a bird native to the planet Coruscant. It was at the top of the food chain of animals such as gully rats, grate toads, ferro-worms, and trantor pigeons http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Spire_falcon Yes, there are falcons in old legends content. AlrikFassbauer
because last i checked earth animals aren't in star wars so why is his ship named after one? He won his ship from Lando. And Lando probably had it from someone else, being the gambler that he was. So we'd have to ask the owner who gave the ship its name. In German language, it is called the "racing falcon", by the way. No idea who came up with this, but the ship is actually called so in the movies.
rawtravel
All of Star Wars took place "A long time ago...." So, what if what we know as "English" was somehow derived from Galactic Basic? So, out raptor "falcon" was named so AFTER the 'bat-falcon" I'm just saying.....
ScarletBlaze
The Millennium Falcon, originally known as YT-1300 492727ZED, was a modified YT-1300 light freighter with a storied history stretching back to the decades before the Clone Wars and the rise of the Galactic Empire. Manufactured by the Corellian Engineering Corporation in 60 BBY, the light freighter was first owned by Corell Industries Limited and underwent several name changes before being bought by the smugglers Kal and Dova Brigger in 48 BBY, and the ship eventually ended up as the property of the secretive Republic Group under the name Stellar Envoy by 29 BBY. The Envoy was destroyed in a collision with a bulk freighter above Nar Shaddaa, but it was rebuilt and served various owners under different names before Quip Fargil named it after the bat-falcon, and it eventually fell into the hands of Lando Calrissian after a game of sabacc—but Calrissian himself lost the ship in another game of sabacc to the smuggler Han Solo several years later. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Millennium_Falcon Edited March 24, 2015 by ScarletBlaze

mudtech
because last i checked earth animals aren't in star wars so why is his ship named after one?Ok two things here. 1. Shocker this is a story written by a man (George Lucas) from the planet Earth. He used mostly real Earth words when writing the story, so there are many creatures with names such as falcon, wolf, rats, etc. 2. Han Solo most likely didn't name the Falcon. Remember he wasn't the original owner of the her, he won her from Lando. Presumably she was already named the Millennium Flacon when Lando owned her and possibly before if he wasn't the original owner either. EDIT: Sigh, didn't notice the date of this thread or read past the OP. Edited May 26, 2016 by mudtech
Wolfninjajedi
"Was she already called the Millennium Falcon when you flew her?" Han asked. "Gone to Pieces," Fargil said, then added: "That was her original name." In the moment it took Han to comprehend it, Leia watched his face pale. "Are you saying..." "I renamed her. Fast as a bat-falcon, resilient enough to last a millennium." - Taken from Millennium Falcon There's your reason. /Thread

Han Solo: What's an Aluminum Falcon? Hey Ford built houses on his time between movies. Maybe he was trying to promote his business....
