Lightsabers as weapons

Real light sabers, when one is hit against another, would go throgh each other and kill the men that are holding them. As a result, we have two intact light sabers and two dead fighters :D

If light saber is plasma which it would most likely be, then to keep the plasma from escaping yo need a magnetic field. This would result in two lightsaber deflecting each other, but cutting through everything else. The only catch is magnetic field like to for circalar form, not straight lines.

There was an MMO (Conan) where you could have kill/dismemberment moves. Instead of having the sabers do one shot moves it would be more like a lightsaber battle where at the end someone prevails and the other person gets decapped or a saber ran through their gut. It would look smoother and who doesn't love some blood :D

Conan had some pretty sweet fatalities. I was partial to the Bear Shaman ripping your head off with their hands.

It's an artifact of this being a ROLE PLAYING game. Lightsabers cannot be anywhere near as potent as they are in the movies. If they were, they would be one-shot kills whenever the Jedi or Sith connected with most blows.

Fixed. The archaic reliance on hitpoints and other stats creates this kind of situation. If this were an FPS, Lightsabers could work like they should, no problem.

Unfortunately decaps and limb loss wouldnt have any blood to them because sabres cauterize wounds, so you wouldnt see any blood.

Go watch A New Hope and fast foward to the scene where Obi Wan cuts off an alien's arm in the cantina. Yup, that's a bloody severed limb lying there on the floor. Quite a bit of blood too.

It's an artifact of this being an MMO. If this was KotOR III, then we'd be able to have fun with lightsabres.

Until then, I just call them glowsticks, glowbats, or lightbatons.

I believe you are looking for Jedi Academy or Jedi Outcast. There are still a few servers up for those games, if you really want to experience a game play like that.

I have a few small scars from training with a katana for Iai Do, most often you would stab your sef in the posterior as you took the blade behind you to start a cut, occaisionaly you might knick your head or go close to removing an ear. I imagine a lightsaber would be less forgiving than a katana in accidents and a double bladed saber although wielded like a staff would be even more be of a problem should you accidently hit yourself.

True. But then this would be an MMOFPS and not an MMORPG. Since it's an MMORPG, we get (not archaic, just different genre) stat based combat.

edit:

After all, in the Opening SWTOR Republic movie, Satele Shan actually takes one to (not through, mind you, to) her palm and stops it from going any further, with not even a singed hair (of course, why she would have hair on her palm is another matter for lonely speculation). So how powerful can they be if you can just pull a Spice Girls and stop one with a "don't go there" gesture?

My assumption was she was just one of those rare force users gifted with the energy absorption talent or whatever it's called. She absorbed the lightsabers energy upon initial contact, which gave her super strong TK to stop the blade and the power for that super push. Couple characters in the books have similar abilities, though they still generally get wounded. (Supposedly when Vader is blocking Hans shots with his hand on cloud city, he's doing the same thing and actually just absorbing the energy from them.) Can't remember whether or not it showed that Satele wasn't somewhat wounded from it.

heh. edit 2: one of the star wars wikis even lists her as a practictioner of that skill, citing that exact event.
