Space Battle, why do I suck?

For MMOs, I've played Runescape, WoW, LotRo, DC Universe. Other than DC Universe, I have always gotten several level capped charaters with best gear.

As for Space Combat games, I completed the entire X-Wing and Tie Fighter series. Completed Freelancer 2 and Wing Commander.

So why do I suck in space combat in this game? I have won the first mission by the skin of my teeth. Other than that, I fail, fail, fail. I have my ship decked out with stuff of lvl 25-30 and trying to do lvl 20 missions. I destroy enemy fighters in droves. I get turrets at a good pace as well, but maybe need a little work here.

So, what am I missing?

I don't know, man. If you did indeed equip your ship with all the upgrades you should be easily able to get through the first 8-10 space missions with only losing MAYBE 1/2 health.

Later on though it gets rough even with upgraded equipment... Not sure what you are doing wrong. Are you ramming into stuff? Are you letting your shields regenerate inbetween firing? (If you stop firing, your shields regen... ) But that really doesn't matter on the first few missions.

Constantly move and barrell roll. Other than that make use of your missiles wisely and kill stuff. Pretty easy. I've never failed a space mission from 1-50 and I was usually undergeared in terms of ship upgrades.

You should of played more arcade games obviously

Are you holding the right mouse button and dragging across multiple turrets when using missiles? You don't have to "click click click" each one. You can drag across and select 4 turrets at a time, makes it much easier.

I right click and hold, drag across multiple targets, and yet it seems to select only one of them (blue circle appears on only one).

Are you failing the mission by dying? or not completing objectives? The multiple targets should work, unless you've just used the missiles and they're reloading. Bottom right shows the number of missiles loaded in orange.

I have seen people post this before.

Could it be related to ship class?

I played a trooper in beta and there was one of the asteroid missions that you had escort a ship through. At one point the ship goes from like 80% to 25% instantly.

Then several fighters come at it and I lost the mission.

I can only guess the ship hit an asteroid as a means of making that mission difficulty a little more "interesting"?

Are you haveing issues with all the space missions or just one?

Slow or non-existent reactions perhaps? A friend of mine has the exact same problem, even with the relatively easy missions. I've yet to fail one, so I've no idea why some are finding it so difficult.

Hard to say if thats it. The enemy fighters are going down very quickly. All I can think of is if I must knock out so many turrets and my right click drap never selects more than one (that seems to be the case), then I am at a disadvantage.

Those asteroids can be dodged, but you have to be fast, hence reactions.

You got all the level 1 upgrades from the Spaceship Upgrade guy, right?

Don't continuously fire your blasters. Your shields will re-gen when you're not firing.

On the first mission (escort), use missiles to take out capital ship turrets, while using blasters in spurts to down fighters.

On the second mission (take out stuff on the Space Station). Use your blasters in spurts to take down fighters and some capital ship turrets as you approach your objective. Use missiles on the hanger, turret, antennas, and shield gens. Keep an eye on what you've taken out to prepare for the next pass.

On the third mission (kill 5 hards and the tough ship). Kill the first two hards that appear with missiles. Continue to kill fighters with blasts of blaster fire. Take out capital ship turrets with blaster fire and maybe a couple of missiles (you can afford a couple). Take out another two of the Hards with missiles when they appear. When the tough ship appears, unload with blasters on the fighters around it, then try to get off three or four missiles. Keep firing missiles at it when it comes back into view, while continuing to blast fighters. Take out the last hard with a missile (2 will appear with about 30 secs left).

Good luck.

Cheers.

Its your upgrades and learning how to use them if you are past the first mission. Upgrade vendor is located in Fleet in market section.

If you are not able to complete the first mission with close to full health, then you are likely just bad at the ship combat and need to practice. barrel roll with spacebar and contantly be on the move making it hard to blast you. If you run into objects it wrecks you ship.

There are pieces of equipment that you get as you level up that also are key to later game space missions that give you activated abilities. You should read each skill you receive so you understand how they apply.

I am doing all the space dailies, daily, at lvl 39.

I am not getting even close to 75% health on any of them, and I never use barel roll.

I do stop shooting when I have nothing to shoot at though, in order to let my shields regen, which hardly ever gets depleted. Try not holding down the fire button 100% of the time.

I found the missions to be significantly easier once I got the power conversion module. I believe this is a fleet commendation only upgrade that's available at the vendor on the fleet. Having this module allows you to send all powers to shields or blasters. Since shields don't regenerate while you're firing anyways, there's generally no downside to using it. Quite the contrary, shield regeneration is significantly faster when in shield mode, and blaster damage is at least a little bit higher in blaster mode.

In the mission where you have to defend the republic shuttle (Pakunni Defense?), I had trouble until I got the power module and could leave it in blaster mode the entire time. Similarly, I wasn't able to finish Kovor Ice Field until I had the module and could leave it on shield mode the entire time, only taking out the required targets using missiles.

don't hold down mouse 1, and use power conversion module.
even holding down mouse 1 you won't have much problems. I didn't have any problems that required me to actually recharge my shields until the last set that I just got in my mid 30s.

I was referring to the escort ship. Not mine.

The only way it goes down so fast, is taking damage from enemy turrets/fighters. I don't think scenery does anything, at least I have never observed it hitting asteroids or the like.

you really don't have to be fast...

Faster than the sedate manner in which the rest of the missions can be played.
