Why did Mace Windu & Co. attack Palpatin

How did Mace know? Anakin told him he was a sith.

See? Mace had the word of an emotionally disturbed young man with a history of impulsive violence and an unusually intimate relationship with the Chancellor's primary political rival. He was perfectly justified in arresting the elected leader of the Republic without bothering to waste time with such farcical activities as "collecting corroborating evidence" or "alerting the Senate & military leadership".

I believe when Palpatine gave his speech in the Senate Chamber, he was using his Force Persuade abilities on a few select influential Senators (obviously he couldn't do all of them) to gather support so that the rest of the Senate would fall in line with the cheering/applause/etc. (obviously apart from Bail Organa, Padme Amidala, and Mon Mothma, etc.)

The Senate would not have picked up on his Sith robes - they were of obscure design and the fact that he has his hood up is explained by the fact that the Jedi 'made an attempt on [his] life' - he doesn't want to show the Senate his deformed face.

They were also war-fatigued and scared of the Republic collapsing, despite the war ending -- they were prepared to trade freedom for peace and stability, and as Palpatine had effectively 'won' the war (because by then the Jedi were being wiped out), he was massively popular with the Republic, so they had no problem allowing him to become Emperor -- notice, however, that he doesn't actually say HE will become Emperor, merely that an august leader, chosen for life, will be appointed.

that I'm reading the PLagueis novel now and Plagueis mentions this power to Palpatine..

Sure Amadala and Organa were in the minority.. most politicians were placed there by the Trade federation

in the 'Darth Plagueis' ..easily a 1/3rd of the Senate are 'Palpatine's men'

they actually were there to arrest him, he is the one who attacked first, therefore, self defense

They had no defense. Palpatine killed everyone but Mace Windu within seconds, and only pretended to be vulnerable to Windu to convince Anakin to break with the Jedi. Palpatine was at the height of his powers, a master manipulator, and could see into the future. Do you think he would have risked exposure to the Jedi if he had not been absolutely certain of his ability to butcher them in a direct confrontation? The entire encounter was staged for Anakin's benefit, with the added benefit of building public animosity toward the Jedi.

Mace Windu might as well have wrapped Anakin & the Galactic Republic up in a box with a ribbon and fedexed it to the Sith. It ultimately doesn't matter if you're in the right or in the wrong if you're being played.

Why did Mace Windu try to arrest Palpatine? Ultimately, the right answer is "Because he behaved exactly how Palpatine thought he would."

Well the jedi already knew the darkside surrounded Palpatine, they just didn't know if it was because of him or some other influence and Anakin confirmed this by saying he was a sith lord. So he didn't need any evidence if already they suspected Palpatine in the first place.

Actually no, from about 1000 years prior to the movies, and up to the movies, and during the movies, the Sith had a philosophy from Darth Bane that there can never be more than 2 Sith, a Master and an Apprentice. This is supported in the movies.

Therefore, since Dooku was dead, there would logically be only one Sith left, since they figured out Palpatine was a Sith, it meant he was the Master, that is, Darth Sidious.

That's not actualy true. Sidious + Dooku + Asaj Ventress = 3!

Exactly. Anakin's a perfectly reliable source. He's so totally NOT the sort of Jedi who might conceivably be tricked or confused by the Dark Side (let alone succumb to it). His performance up to that point had been rock solid.

So he didn't need any evidence if already they suspected Palpatine in the first place.

During their careers, most Galactic Senators probably overheard Jedi make comments like this. It probably accounts for why Palpatine's story after the arrest attempt was accepted at face value almost unanimously. Everyone knew the Jedi thought things like "evidence" were less important than their own personal gut feelings.

Sure. But this is a _fun_ troll.

Fair enough. Its not a troll if the trolled person is having fun. Which...in that case...

The troll has a fair point. In my opinion Mace Windu Probably as in fact doing the wrong thing by trying to kill Palpatine one he was defeated. Whether or not it was a trick, Windu should have NOT attempted to kill someone who was essentially surrendered by begging for help. That and I have heard that Windu's style was very close to the dark side as it was, so I dont doubt he was under the dark sides influence even more at that point. Palpatine could very well have been sitting there influencing him to break the Jedi Code.

Pretended to be vulnerable to Windu? Somehow I doubt that, Mace would have ended his life if Anakin hadn't acted like a total idiot and been swayed by the dark side.

It's simple. The Jedi knew there was a 'Darth Sidious' who controlled the entire Separatist movement, thanks to Count Dooku. As soon as Palp confessed to Anikan to be that sith lord, he immediately told the second strongest and in power jedi he could find, Windu. Now knowing someone that powerful is also in control of the Galactic Rep. he couldn't possible wait till the next morning to arrest him, let alone in public to make a scene. He takes a team with him to arrest Palp, he strikes.

That's it.

Not because he wasn't a jedi, but because he was the dark lord they were looking for who was in control of the Separatist, not to mention the treason charges.

Nothing more.

Mace Windu was the Master Of The Order right before the Clone Wars, and himself created numerous lightsaber fighting forms. He would've taken Palp down then if Anakin didn't interfere.

.........This troll got 5 pages of replies? Ok, Anakin told Mace Windu of the plot of the Emperor against the Senate. They went to arrest him for being a criminal, not for being the Dark Lord of the Sith. Palpatine attacks them, Mace whoops the Chancellors rear, Anakin being the wuss he was in the prequals, saves the Chancellor, becomes Darth Vader.

The End :D

Yes. And Count Dooku tried to murder Palpatin (at least the jedi thought so).

So, why would they remove him from his office? Because he has the wrong religion?

and anakin slaughtered younglings because they were the wrong religion. but you think palpatine is a victim.....lol.

Does the OP have no idea what being a Sith stands for?

Ofcourse they needed him arrested. But Mr Sidious decided to go all lightbaery-butcher on mr Windu.

This not just a religion issue. Its what the Sith are responsible for, have done and will keep on doing if left unchecked that validates everything Windu did.

a better question is, instead of trying to arrest Palpatin in his private office at night, why did Mace not confronted the dude in broad daylight or during a public senate meeting?

Doing this would expose Palpatin to the general public, saving the Jedi from order 66 going through and preventing the rise of an empire.

Way to think this one through master jedi

Rewatch the movies.

If the crowd would find out the Jedi order, those that are present to protect them didnt notice earlier a freaking Sith Lord had taken the position Palpatine had, they'd get a lot of problems on their hands. hence taking him away from the prying eyes of the public.

So he was a enemy of republic not because of something he has done but because his religion is evil (or at least the leader of an other religion said so).

That's the very definition of religious persecution.

That's like calling religious persecution when someone is arrested while actively trying to blow up a plane. At this point in the Star Wars galaxy, Sith is not a force user who is not a Jedi, it is a conscious choice that you want to be the embodiment of the Dark Side. Traditionally, a Jedi would fight any Sith he met with the intent of killing the Sith, Mace and the others just wanted to bring him in under suspicion of treason. So really, it's more like a cop witnesses a crime in progress, asks if he could ask some questions, the criminal shoots the cop, and then people cry religious persecution.
