Ok well shortly after Mace fails in arresting the chancellor and Anakin becomes vader, Palpatin gives his speech. The guy looks like a monster, sounds like a monster, is wearing a creepy dark cloak, and is suddenly announcing that all jedi are to be killed. Not one member of the senate was thinking, hold on this guy sounds kind of strange: He wants to remove democracy, create an Empire run exclusively by him and kill off our guardian jedi who have protected us for thousands of years? well he says we'll get a death star so im cool with it.

a better question is, instead of trying to arrest Palpatin in his private office at night, why did Mace not confronted the dude in broad daylight or during a public senate meeting? Doing this would expose Palpatin to the general public, saving the Jedi from order 66 going through and preventing the rise of an empire. Way to think this one through master jedi
