The Reason why you can't return to your faction is explained in the 2nd Chapter of KOTFE. But basically you failed them and after 5 years they are on fringe of collapse. Return to Republic/Empire would be an Death Wish, the reason for Arcann to wipe them out completely (you wouldn't want to do it for your faction) The other reason is why you can't return too your original faction, the Valkorion is inside you. You are an threat with HIM inside, how can they trust you. For them you are an Valkorion in another body /shell. We can argue that construction of conversation/story in Chapter I(the Talk with Valkorion) is made in the way that no matter what you choose Valkorion dies and it enters in your body. Thus eliminating at least second path of story telling for example you join Valkorion and stop Arcann from killing HIM, but that path is problematic in its own way. Back to explaining why the Story that is Emperor centered/oriented had to lead to KOTFE/KOTET. Vitate understood that current Sith Empire isn't the best what he can create and even when controlling Empire and Republic covertly using Children of Emperor it isn't the best what can he achieve. The Revan tell us (FP Maelstrom Prison), that through him he had glimpse or connection to light side. Is this moment that Vitate understand that he can create more Powerful Force Users Order Ever... thous the Order of Knight of Zakuul. He learn t from the past experience/mistakes and created something far much greater and powerful then Republic or Empire (they are obsolete for him). So you finally meet him in Flesh(or again) in Chapter I KOTFE and he recognize you as the greatest threat or ally, you are currently the most "powerful/influential being" in the galaxy. Thats why the choice Join him or Die. Even when it all ends in death of Valkorion in Chapter I KOTFE, HE uses you. Ultimately through KOTFE/KOTET HE "helps" you to elimnate the "competition" (Arcann, Vaylin, Senya), and "helps" to create "savior" of All Galaxy and all factions. So just in right moment take control of your body and the WHOLE Galaxy is HIS once again. The class stories are leading you, from the birth of the "hero" to final battle with the Greatest Villain in current timeline. One Villain One Way to Stop Him One Story. So from beginning story all stories even if different class ones all of them in the end merge into one "story". We could create once again new unique class factions stories but we must remember that because of "limitations" of game development all those "unique" would have to merge into one. Creating different story paths would eventually mean that in some point we would have divide the game into 2,3,4 or more "different" games or universes( hence the game design "limitations") Creating different path of Story in Game isn't the same as writing an different new books.

OP please look at the whole 1.0 - 5.0 or 6.0 As Story about Emperor.....not you, your character your class... nor the Republic or Empire.... Emperor is the MAIN character and CORE of the story. ( and the I Chapter of KOTFE talk with Valkorion, he just sums up all your 8 story class activities, so whatever you have done before you meet the Emperor of Zakuul was "irrelevant") It is the same as the Star Wars I- VI movies...the main character is.... Darth Sidious/Palpatine.... the core character... the story mover and teller. I know that "WE"(me or you) want to be the main character....but wait once your the main all glorious Supreme Alliance Commander... you don't like to be main character. We are just above average beings(characters one of many) that have role to play in this whole story and we can/could play it watch it from different views
