Just to elaborate on this you can use /w instead of /whisper or you could also click on the players's name in the chat box to automatically input the /whisper [name] then type your message, this makes it quicker and easier instead of typing some of those strange long names some players have. The small speech bubble to the left of the chat box allows you to open a list of all the different chat channels to talk to different groups of people, from there click on the one you want to use or use / then any of those channels to switch to e.g. /guild, /ops etc.

Yes, via in game mail, just make sure you type the character name correctly. Mail is cross faction to your legacy/account only.
