oh man. Obviously porting directly to your ship is an "easymode button" that trivializes the entire game. ***?

So if SWTOR runs on the Heroengine then.....
GreymaneAlpha replied to karnyboy's topic in General Discussion
Pretty much. The meaningless **** that people complain about continues to baffle me, especially when the most important part of the game--combat--remains so awkward, unresponsive, buggy, and (especially in PvP) slow. -
Well to be fair, there have been a lot of bug fixes. Not enough, obviously, but at some point you just have to admit that "the game was released too early", at least from the point of view of overall game stability and polish. That said, they probably released it at exactly the right time in terms of "appeal to the most people". WoW is at its lowest point in years, effectively, and sneaking SWTOR's launch in during the holidays probably helped initial sales a lot. Plus, they benefit from Diablo 3's delay.

No. It's not simple. Play PvP. Try to figure out which person on your team has the huttball, when 8 people are running around each other in circles 30 yards away, three levels below you, and you can't actually read their names because they have their character's nameplate set as something like "Jedi Master Hugely'long Giganticness'name". Are you telling me that in the entire time you leveled two characters you NEVER noticed how awful the targeting system was? That tab didn't give you the enemy you expected? That trying to click on enemy to Force Lift him was more difficult than it should be?! Did you pay attention at all?!

Start grinding diplomacy and running the Esseles (or whatever empire equivalent is) over and over and over

Oh oh oh here's my favorite samples that I didn't see the OP mention: Extremely high input-to-ability responsiveness: WoW: Shipped with amazing ability responsiveness SWTOR: Still working on it Animation-based ability delay: WoW: Shipped with a notable lack of animation-based ability delay SWTOR: Instants like "force wave" can somehow get interrupted? Macros to reduce ability bloat: WoW: Shipped with macros SWTOR: No. Mouseovers: WoW: In first expansion--revolutionized the genre with mouseovers and focus support SWTOR: No. Targeting by nameplates/healthbars? WoW: Of course? Why is this even a question? SWTOR: Huh? What's that? An intuitive tab-targeting sytem? WoW: So natural, it's never even been tweaked--it was that good to begin with! SWTOR: How about if I gave you a target 40 yards behind you? Is that something you would be interested in? Travel between Worlds / Continents: WoW, Vanilla: Well, you need to pay a mage for that WoW, Modern: Portals everywhere! SWTOR: Quick travel to 'near' spaceport -> Run to shuttle -> orbital station -> elevator -> airlock -> loading screen -> ship -> galaxy map -> planet select -> exit ship -> loading screen -> airlock -> orbital station -> shuttle -> destination!

Who else doesn't want 3rd party UIs or Macros?
GreymaneAlpha replied to Miffy's topic in General Discussion
Exactly this. And to add to this, people seem to be thinking that AddOns automatically will lead to all sorts of things that they think "trivializes" the game: DeadlyBossMods, GearScore, Damage Meters, etc. And that's simply not true, because it depends on what functionality the AddOn API provides. If you can't parse combat log or chat log, you can't have a Damage Meter or Deadly Boss Mods. If you can't inspect players, etc, you can't have GearScore. -
Comprehensive list of issues, with constructive suggestions
GreymaneAlpha replied to Probain's topic in Suggestion Box
....this is among the least comprehensive of a so-called comprehensive list I've seen in a long time. Other issues: -The UI. All of it. -Tab-targeting. It's awful and nonsensical. -Click targeting. It's impossible. -Nameplate/Healthbar targeting. It doesn't exist -Macros. Don't exist. -Add-ons. Badly needed. -Animation-delayed abilities (e.g., Force Wave // Overload). Mind-blowingly stupid. -Combat log. Doesn't exist. -Galactic Trade Network. Awful. -Airlocks and Orbital Stations. They exist. -A shuttle to the PvP area of Ilum. It doesn't exist, but would help Ilum participation greatly. -Looking for Dungeon / Group. Doesn't exist. -Dots preventing captures in Warzones. Why? -Resolve Bar. It's awful, and needs to be diminishing returns, not all-or-nothing. -Tank Companions. They suck at tanking because they have no armor bonuses. -Non-mirrored ability animations (e.g., Project vs Shock, Death from Above vs Mortar Volley). Awful and highly imbalanced. -Free camera option. Doesn't exist, and auto-pivot on movement makes kiting very awkward. -Same-sex romance options. For some reason, people are obsessed with ************ about how this doesn't exist even though there's bigger problems in the game. -Loading times. They're very long. -FPS. It's very low. -The game engine in general. It's very bad. -
Related: why is there no free camera option? Auto-pivoting camera is so stupid, and it makes kiting impossible

An excellent example of the problems with tab-targeting in this game. In WoW, you knew exactly which target tab would give you, because it intuitively targeted things that were directly in front of your character. Honestly, I'm not even sure what the tab-target algorithm in this game is anymore. I used to think that it was "next closest enemy", but the more I pay attention to what I'm tabbing at, the less I think that's true either.

Are you ever going to fix animations on clutch abilities like Force Wave // Overload, which are extremely buggy (the area of effect is centered at where you were when you hit the button, not where you are when it goes off) and can be interrupted (despise being instant)? These abilities are extremely hard to use and unreliable. Worse, they're extremely important in PvP, especially due to the prevalence of HuttBall.
