I must admit, Kai Zykken's login reward dyes are pretty crappy. (In fact, the login rewards have been pretty uninspiring - but that's a topic for another thread.)

And what's with him taking off from his vendor spot on the fleet? I might have a theory:

Perhaps he is one of the main characters in the up-coming spring event. I'd be down for that

Possible, but to my knowledge he was removed because of the complaints about his RNG issues. 

There are a very large amount of equipment sets that you can see in your retired achievements section of your achievement panel.  They are the last remnants of how set bonuses worked in game when they were released and that is no longer the system that the SWTOR team wants to use.  If you are like me and were not around when those were able to be aquired in game as part of the looting and currency system, but you wanted to collect the equipment sets listed there, Kai Zykken was the only way to get them.   *With the exception of the Final Breath set which can be purchased on Onderon (so Steve doesn't jump on me)   He also sold the 4 recipes for 4 of the crafted sets from those achievement as well as the tactical recipes from another set of achievements.  You had to give him 1000 tech frags + 500,000 credits per piece of equipment and you would get a random piece of gear from all of those sets based off of your current spec and loot setting.  We were told by the dev team that they were coded so that you would not get any duplicates...and you would always get a Taskmaster Chestguard is you had reached all of the possible pieces on that character.   Any of us who went through that process can tell you that that statement was not accurate.  You had to do some weird things to get some of the set's final pieces to actually drop for you.   It became a less than pleasant experience for some.  I actually enjoyed working on it.

I believe the backlash from the community made them completely rework that entire structure and that included removing Kai and replaceing him with a droid.  On your first interaction with the droid, you will actually get a 1-time cut scene about the fact that Kai has departed and there are some funny references about his "products" if you choose certain dialogue choices.

if i remember right small lore they gave for him being gone is that hes fugitive and wanted by both Empire and Republic, so he had to run away from the fleets, i do like idea of him appearing on the spring event.

The droid replacing him is honestly a little bit more annoying than he was but I love the lore reason that hes such a nuisance that both sides want him either locked up or just flat out dead lol

Every time I was shopping at Hyde and Zeek I could hear him shouting his lines through the wall and it was always annoying.

in 6.x he was most useful for rare drop tacticals
