grueber
step 1 - go to store step 2 - pay more than $500 for new computer step 3 - enjoy Sigh. No. Most computers sold at retail stores come with either integrated graphics or some mediocre video card. The average consumer doesn't even know what a video card is and won't pay extra for it so the stores sell desktops that can play Farmville. grueber
For people who are serious about building their own system for the lowest price the best thing is to build it as components come on sale. Slickdeals is a great site where people posts all sorts of deals including computer components. For cpu + motherboard combo the best place is Microcenter if you have one near you. They sell the combos cheaper than Newegg/Amazon/NCIX even factoring in tax. The catch is the deals are only at the store. For a video card I would recommend a 6850 or up for AMD and a 560Ti or up for Nvidia. I've tried swtor on a SSD; found no significant difference as the loading times seemed bottlenecked on the server side. You can find guides to help you build your system on magazines or websites like Maximum PC.
Neuromann
So I got this as a christmas gift two years ago: • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit• Intel® Core 2 Quad processor Q8300 [2.5GHz, 4MB L2, 1333MHz FSB]• 4GB DDR2-800MHz SDRAM [2 DIMMs]• 640GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive• 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 [DVI, HDMI, VGA]• LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive• Integrated 10/100/1000 (Gigabit) Ethernet• 15-in-1 memory card reader, 2 USB, audio• Integrated 7.1 channel sound The main problem is that it was a gift, obviously it wasn't built. It is *gasp* an HP PC. Now I'm wondering if any of you tech guru's can tell me if there is any way to upgrade this sucker to get better FPS in this game? The main issue I have is certain areas where there is fog/gas and my frames just instantly drop to ~10. Also obviously Ilum is practically unplayable. Is there anything I can do? The vid card is awful. I would upgrade that. 6850 or better AMD or 560Ti or better Nvidia. The processor and memory are fine. If your really interested you can add an aftermarket cpu cooler such as a coolermaster hyper 212+ and overclock it. Most Core2 processors overclock very well. Just make sure your case can fit the above cards. The cooler may not fit. If it's a tower case you should be ok, but horizontal desktop cases are pretty limited. Hmmm, you really think the graphics card would make a big difference if I upgraded it? How much FPS of a difference do you think I'd see? I thought this game was mostly processor speed based? Also, since it's an HP machine I can't overclock it through the BIOS, it is locked...
mrshift
Original post: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=295960. (Closed by admin.) Hi all, I wonder if anyone on the forum is using a Radeon HD 4870, and if it is behaving for them. I am still encountering flickering (small, square) artefacts and freezes (every 10-15 seconds), genuinely making SWTOR unplayable. I've also had two hard reboots, which is why I stopped playing for some time. Drivers are completely up to date, shadows off, bloom off. I guess I'm employing process of elimination, and trying to establish just where the problem is. I'm considering upgrading to a GeForce GTX 560, but I'd need to be confident that: 1. The HD 4870 is giving others graphical/gameplay issues, AND 2. Others using the GTX 560 consistently report no graphical problems. I'd rather not shell out c.£150 and be no better off. Cheers! (Windows 7 Pro x64, 8Gb RAM.) Update: apologies for not posting more detailed specs. And yes, I'm running the latest Catalyst application profiles. To give you a relative idea i5 2.8ghz Asus Motherboard 4gb Corsair dual channel DDR3 250gb Haitachi HDD 700w PSU w/ external or auto fan speed EVGA GTX460 768mb GDDR5 ASUS DVD/RW For those interested, with a new 1080p LG monitor, new keyboard, new mouse, new headphones / mic, this came in at just over 1 grand. The only super great deal I got was my OS, of which I got from my MSDN account, so didn't have to pay for it per-se. Everything except the keyboard, mouse, and headset/mic were one sale at various places around town. Fry's price matched, so all my shopping was done in one place, in and out. This system plays the game at full 1080p, all settings high, 32x forced anti-aliasing, and rarely drops below 40fps with desktop composition. These same parts today could probably be cobbled together for under a grand.
Skullncross
Ive played swtor on a very low spec pc my friend has and on max settings no lag and the graphics card is old a 8800 nvidia and still looks stunning in the graphics ingame and only 4gig memory then again they on 50 megs broadband. but myself I use a quadcore pentium 2.66 cpu,8gigs of ram,64 bit os,and a nvidia 465 gtx graphics card and also on max settings no lag but im also on 50 megs broadband and I do rendering also on my one and can get upto 1080pHD doing it hope that helps maybe. Gerandar
I would add that min spec seems to always mean not very well and at the lowest setting when your talking about MMO's. min specs should be all on low with around 20-25FPS not "your computer can run the exe but thats it!" if building a PC just for SWTOR take the recommended specs and double it. and if your lucky you wont get FPS issues. but dont worry if your PC has an issue with the game bioware will dismiss your claim as its your PC's fault not there games

stephenalandavie
Hello, I am about to be purchasing a new system specifically for gaming and i have decided to go for a custom built PC. I was wondering if there is any advice anybody could give me? This is the main game i play online. There are so many options for instance Hard Drive Do i go for SSD or HDD? Would i face issues with SSD?, would i install the OS on the SSD or HDD? What is the optimum specification for playing this game? Not just reccommended but the top specification. Any help would be appreciated i am greatly confused.

Shingara
I am thinking of getting a 2GB graphics card is the SLI configuration better? well you wont really notice the difference in games if your sli'd as 1gb is enough on sli. my 560's are only a little bit over 1gb and they run fine, cool and v fast. I can hardly notice the difference between the pc with the 560's and the pc running the 590, i use the bully and 590 for autocad mainly which is what my old machine used tobe used for and thats where you can tell. I see what you mean the pc running the 590 is used in AUTOCAD its bound to be ableto handle swtor with what it has to do with the AUTOCAD. What do you think is the best setup? i am confused with these hard drives aswell these new SSD drives.

What do you think is the best setup? i am confused with these hard drives aswell these new SSD drives. well the problem with ssd's is the fact that the cost a fortune for what the can contain data wise, alot use 1 ssd for main drive then store everything else bar there main programs on the hds. so its what you have to spend that makes the difference, my best mate has 4 revo3's and his machine is the fastest thing i have ever seen, he uses his pc for top end modeling and rendering so requires really fast read and write but good old fasion western digs blacks on sata 3 is good enough if you dont wont to spend a fortune on it. I have a budget of about £800 so i am weighing up my options. I think i am settling on a 2GB Nvidia with 16 Gb DDR3 RAM with a quad core processor. It is just the Hard drive set up i am considering. some say to buy a 1TB HDD for the storage and a 120 GB SSD for the OS and any main programs. Kyarc
Hi all, As my old laptop (Core i5 2430M, 8GB RAM, GeForce GT540M) is having issues with this game (fps on fleet is 30 - 50, but in wz it is 5 - 20), I am looking for replacement. My next machine will have Radeon 6770 or GeForce GT 650 and the question is, which one to take. The power of each card is quite clear on the paper, but I would like to hear some real life experience in swtor using them. I saw laptops with mobility Radeon 5650 running pvp smoothly, and than facing the crap fps with GT540 which should be a bit better. So long story short, I would like to avoid situation when I will buy GT 650 and will have problems while on Radeon 6770 everything would be smooth. Thanks in advance for info. MandFlurry
I have some parts of my New Computer that i'll be building. Right now I have an obsolete Area-51 Alienware, but i'll show you what kind of computer I will be building. Chasis: Master cooler HAF X Blue with 4 to 5 fans illuminated by the fans blue LED light witha side windowGPUs: 2 680s and maybe a 670 or 560ti for folding. All from EVGA.MB: ASUS: P8Z77 Deluxe with Ivy-Bridge i7 LGA 1155 Liquid Cooled.Memory: 16gigs of Corsair 1600-2100+Mouse: SWTOR Razer mouse2 Black Cavlar or 1 Black Cavlar and 1 Blue WD HDDs 1 terabyte and a SSDPSU: 1200 watt for all my programs3.0 ports for 2 GPUs and plenty of USB 2.0 and 3.0Windows 7 Home Premium The other stuff I forgot, but will get the Blue WD for back-up and the SSD/SSDs for this game and other programs. The i3s are for the Lower end of computers, the i5 is for normal gamming and even more good stuf it can do, but the i7s Are for the Enthusiasts, or E-Leet like the i7 2600 and if Ivy-Bridge. From what I heard on the evga Forum, is that the Sandy-Bridge will be discontinued soon, but can't prove it though Intel want ppl to get the new Ivy-Bridge if they're going to get any i7s I should say this computer I will be getting parts by the month, and I know ppl don't need near the stuff and power that I will have when my Computer is probably done in December because the 680s Vanilla aren't getting out. But this is for me and to help me keep sane, and build stuff again. Edited June 5, 2012 by MandFlurry need to put in more reasoning
