Get rid of bolster once for all

  • bolster will be moving up to 238.

I don't get why people, Bioware Designers and players alike, want bolster at all for PvP.

I mean we all know the most important part in M.M.O. is upgrading a character and feeling now that powerful.

  • So how can you feel rewarded with gear giving you only a slight increment for your character?
  • How can you feel rewarded if you can't slaughter totally ungeared characters?

If someone puts a lot of effort into a character, he needs to feel rewarded and powerful.

He deserves the right to gank others players.

That's how you keep players hooked. The carrot being better gear and so being more powerful.

.

So please allow me to ask this question:

  • Why most major successful PvP games are based on skill and not gear?

If I may continue:

  • Why Blizzard is launching a World Wide professional eSport league for OverWatch based on skill, not gear?

I must not get is so I guess we should just get rid of Bolster once for all and certainly not use bolster to set all players on the same level, so skill and players coordination is of the essence. Because I guess players do PvP to keep being abused until they can do the same to others.

Yes, please let the people who nolife this game curb stomp casuals because they have better gear. Thats seems more fair than giving everyone a base stat, no matter their gear, so gear doesn't matter.

Its not the gear difference that moves EXPERIENCED players are ahead of others. Someone with zero skill and 240 gear will suck while an experienced player with 228 gear will own the 240 player easily. The bolster only achieves that the experienced player takes longer to smash the noobs that are unable to use their skills properly. For experienced players it does no real good.

Its actually an insult to players that are slightly below the gear level. Its involuntary hand holding. This isnt necessary at max level. If people didnt learn how to play from 1-69, then one more level wont change much.

Don't kid yourself, gear matters in this Expertise deprived wasteland but It's also classes. Some aren't affected and can compensate really well whereas other classes are an absolute nightmare. The last part of this makes me smile and want to argue for 250 back. Yes, there are players who were an absolute free food target back when they had this but there was such a level playing field that only the actual imbalances stood out such as Mercs, the double stance bug and trinity/class imbalanced teams.

Bads still got stomped but people weren't able to play the new gear map PvP warzone. Bolster doesn't hold your hand or make you somehow a better player- it just is about an equal playing field- if a player under Bolster can outmatch a geared player because they handle the encounter better, they earned that win- a player who gains an advantage because they're in 240 against 228 and under normal equally geared circumstances they'd have lost but their gear allows them to compensate for their mistakes/ weaker skill- then there is a problem. There are bad players at the moment who think they're good because of gear and worse still, people who want to break the trinity based on gear imbalances more so than even bad RNG matchmaking.

Basically it's called gear gap and no one wants that in pvp because pvp should only ever be about skill vs skill. Gear should make zero difference. Lowbies and mids just wouldn't work in pvp.

There are only a few options to that and Bolster is one.

Another is to give everyone a standard pvp set to wear, but that's been tried and it failed.

The other option is to make everyone's gear not matter and everyone seperate class gets its own cookie cutter stats. But that is the least favoured.

Bolster is by far the better of those solutions, but it hasn't been implemented very well in 5.0. The most balanced Bolster has ever been was in 4.0 and it was basically perfect. Bioware completely broke it in 5.0 when they realised the RNG gear grind wasn't affecting pvpers enough 😡

Troll thread?? No way. Bolster never should have existed.

Bolster is the helicopter parent/socialism "fix' to SWTOR. Mommy, I don't have any gear, and I'm not any good, but I still wanna play with the big boys, fix it mommy. Ok dearie I'll just rig the game so everyone is equal, and we'll all be nice comrades.

Get gear, get good, get rid of bolster.

I guess option 3, giving everyone a specific class set is the easiest for BioWare to balance out classes though it removes any template tweaking. As such it would indeed be the less desired solution, player wise.

Option 1, bolster looks very tempting but then if it bolstering all players to the exact same level, I don't see the difference with the above option.

As such it leaves option 2, which as is, is a no go. Now allow players to pick their gear among different pieces or templates then you might have an interesting feature. Again player wise as it will be more challenging for the devs to balance.

Now guess I'm in the minority envisioning SWTOR PvP turning into a hugely successful eSport, - especially Huttball -

As such you might want to set a couple of rules.

  • First it stats with teams composition. Especially on Ranked PvP you might want to restrict how many healer/tank/dps each team can have.
  • Then it goes with gear like either a choice of gear, bolster or a mix between both.
  • Finally it goes with macros. If it ever turns out into an eSport you will not allow macros (even if we know they are less efficient than direct key input for skilled players)
  • And not to be forgotten you certainly want to add a mouse look toggle

You do know the simplest and easiest solution for the Devs to implimet is to Bolster all gear to a higher lvl than the max gear lvl. This is what they did pre 4.0 and still had in place after 5.0 was launched. There was only gear gap from the bottom entry gear to the top gear. This allowed people to min/max their stats the way they preferred to play. ie more alacrity or more crit.

But then they nerfed Bolster down to just above 230 gear, its caused a gear gap problem.

Boosting Bolster back to 250 is the easiest and simplest thing for the Devs to do. Anything else requires time, money, resources and testing.

FYI, Marcos that improve combat performance aren't allowed and pvp in this game will never ever be an esport

In all honesty i wouldn't mind. I dislike pvp because it's nothing but a cc fest where who has the most cc skills wins in the end so i only do it for the daily or weekly box. If i would lose twice as fast without bolster i'd be spending less time in pvp for the same rewards so it sounds more like a blessing to me if anything.

Wow that's about the most selfish attitude I've heard on this topic. Why even bother pvping if you hate it so much. I'm sure your team mates love your winning spirit when you're on the team.

If this is an attempted troll, you need to go back to troll school. But if it's not. Please don't queue for pvp.

Well to be honest CC certainly needs some tweaking.

In some WZ I spend more time staring at my screen unable to do anything than else.

I don't get how the designers think it's fun to take away player's keyboard while watching others gank their character.

It not a troll, why does everyone keep assuming that????

PVP sucks. Its Stun Wars. Its a wretched experience where those who think they know it all, berate those who don't do it their way. So, why do I do it? Because the daily/weekly crate might have a good crafting schematic and made, and some no-one runs NiM mode ops i need unassembled components to upgrade 236 gear to 242 gear. Basically BW has forced me into it, to get the things I want.

If they make the crafting isotopes and schematics available outside group content i sure would, but they don't , at least not in a reliable way. So don't hate the player, hate the game for not providing a solid alternative.

Interesting enough I just /trash every single schematic from the CXP and WZ weekly without even looking at something more than the icon.

Different perspective I guess

Once again if you aren't going to try in pvp... don't queue.. you ruin it for other people

Still.. you could atleast try.. when you don't, it ruins other people's games.. so yeah, I'll hate the player if they don't try and they shouldnt queue if they aren't going to

I never said I wasn't trying. I do try and I'm pretty darn good at it. Generally in the top 2 or 3 in DPS. That doesn't mean I enjoy it. I only do it because it gets me to the end I want. I'd rather have a novicain-less root canal than PvP.
