I 2nd what Ford said, I really just don't care about this. Fine he shot first in the original, fine he didn't in the SE, fine whatever...this whole thing is just kinda dumb imo and blown up way too much.

Nope Wolfhinjajedi.....I don't really care either about weither Greedo did or Han did.....what really happened was that the Film Developers got so eager to put the first Star Wars: A New Hope Movie out that they snipped off the scene showing that Greedo was a lousey shot.....just blowing a hole in the wall a few inches above Han's head in the Cantina Scene.......then Han fires and........he does not miss!!!!! POOORRRR GREEDO.....he becomes a slimy spot on the floor; the reason that this is true is because on the Remade versions that such clippings of the Film Editors were still kept many years after since they were tossed in a few large metal cans and low and behold the clippings were found and added to the DVDs and Blue Ray disks.

Hate to burst your bubble......BUT YOUTUBE does it better! On Youtube you can find out whom shot first in the cantina scene if Han or Greedo shot first.......Han Solo did not shoot first, the clippings added to the DVDs and Blue Ray shows that Greedo fired first so there.....once and for all the Debate is finally over.

There's no debate. In 1977 it was clear to me when I watched Star Wars over and over that Han shot first. Period.

Yep. There is no debate in the first place.

George Lucas has this really bad habit of constantly fiddling with his works to fit the tastes of whatever group of people that brings in commercial profit. People wouldn't be so bummed if it was just slight retouches of the screen or addition of special effects, but he actually goes so far as to retcon stuff without thinking about the consequences.

The fact of the matter is, originally, Han wasn't a "good guy." He was an interesting and complex character. He had his heart in the right place, but he is also cynical, untrusting, shrewd, and street-smart because he's a criminal operating in areas where there was hardly any law, like the American wild west. He's also effectively a drug trafficker as well.

So when Han first appeared in the movies, he was a bad-*** before the term "bad-***" was even invented. He's not inherently cruel or evil, and he also hates the Empire, and is prone to be a good person most of the times so long as consequences allowed it... but when in tough spots, he would not hesitate to just "shoot first and be done with it", because that's what he is. A tough, street-wise, and sometimes violent criminal operating in criminal operations.

EP.4 in 1977 wasn't afraid to present Han as what he was, and that's why we loved his character so much. It was cool. But then after the late '80s Lucas is just mesmerized by the commercial empire the series has brought up, and starts viewing Star Wars as more of a kiddy-family-friendly flick.. more toys, more cartoons, more TV shows... so it's gotta be friendlier to the children, so Han can't be a criminal/gangster type character. He's just a bit cranky good guy. so he couldn't have just shot the Rodian in cold blood!

**shakes head**

I can put it in simpler terms. he's the Star Wars version of Josey Whales, billy the kid, or any other outlaw you can think of.

Han shot first. The act was so shocking that it matched Obi Wan slicing up aliens in the earlier scene.

The scene showed that this random smuggler was as dangerous as the Jedi and that we have entered a dark universe.

It helped set the tone for the whole film and made the character infamous, turning to legend as he joined the Rebels and became a good guy.

If Greedo shot first the impact of the scene and the character would have been far less.
