Ever feel guilty?

Infernixx doesn't use logic, don't try and reason with him. He doesn't like me therefore he tries over and over to **** on my threads :) I thought I had him on ignore, I guess I didn't.

Let's stick to the topic at hand.

Just stop smacking yourself in the face and the guilt won't bother you anymore.

Call me cold(I know I'm cold), but I will never ever feel guilty about spending money on trivial things. I only live my life. Only walk my shoes. I can empathize with others and understand their pain, but never will I degrade my life to help someone that isn't involved in my life. I would blow millions of dollars on crap if I had the ability to do so because I'd assume it would bring me enjoyment. I don't spend a second thinking about starving children, war torn countries, ownerless pets etc... I am concerned with myself, my family and my friends and will do everything to keep them happy and safe. I feel if everyone did that we wouldn't have nearly as many troubles around the world.

I only used the CM for a name and race change on one of my characters I made at launch. I still have over 3000 coins from being a sub. I wouldn't feel guilty about buying pixels, as you put it. But it is just something I refuse to spend real money on. I will never pay money for anything in a MMO, besides the monthly sub or initial purchase. I also very rarely buy DLC's for other games. Skyrim and Dragon Age Origins are the only ones that come to mind where I purchased some of the DLC. So if you feel as if your hundreds of dollars are well spent, then no you shouldn't feel guilty. Why would you spend real money on packs when you can buy them for credits off the GTN?

That's because it completely renders his question moot and pointless.

He suffers from guilt because he chooses to blow his real money on pixels as opposed to blowing pixel money on pixel items.

These are fairly stupid arguments. I spend real money on the CM. CM stuff is cheap, and I make enough IRL that it isn't a big deal. I make enough money per hour in real life that it is a waste of time to farm creds to buy something off of the GTN. Farming creds to buy something off of the GTN is more often than not a waste of my time.

My two options to get what I want in the game:

1. Work a single hour IRL to make the cash to buy off of the CM

2. Run dailies for several hours to build up enough creds to buy it off of GTN

It is nothing short of a waste of time to buy most of what I want with credits. Time = money. You are blowing real money on pixels by spending time farming for creds (and let's face it, dailies aren't where we get the enjoyment out of this game) when you could make real money with that same time.

If by what you have posited that time = money, either you are playing at work or you get payed to play this game. Otherwise time does not equal money if you're playing this game at home for a leisure activity. So, how does one who plays this game as a leisure activity get paid at the same time while playing this game? Just curious, cause I think we all would like to get paid to play SWtOR.

4 replies, and 3 of them are trolls/insults... Really good start, so glad I take the time to post a serious topic in general discussion.

Serious topic? You're looking for validation, for people to tell you it's OK to blow $500 on pixels.

Well, as you said, it's your money. If you want to set it on fire, that's your business. Why do you need others to tell you it's OK?

I'm dead serious here. Why would you spend real money on stuff you can pick up for credits?

To be quite honest, I'm rather happy that he does. Someone needs to populate the GTN with the armor sets I want to buy. I'll happily give them credits for the stuff they bought with cash.

To address the main topic: My answer would be "No, you shouldn't feel guilty". It's entertainment. You're allowed to spend as much as you can afford on entertainment. The purpose of life is to have fun, and if we're going to talk about dollar-per-hour-of-enjoyment, video games --even with the cost of hypercrates-- are still some of the cheapest entertainment you can find. Far cheaper than a bar or a movie or a sporting event.

Of course... The OP won't ever read that response, because he tossed me on his Ignore list for having actual knowledge about a previous thread of his. That attitude may have some impact on the lack of serious responses.

Agreed! VERY cheap entertainment!

My Packer tickets were $97 per game this year (2013/14 price).

Took my kids to see Robocop on Saturday, $31.50 for the movie, $29.50 on popcorn and 3 sodas.

SWTOR is pretty cheap.

Yes and it hasn't had a bad review. My bro has seen it and said it was pretty decent as his GF didn't fall asleep.

As to the topic at hand , I don't think spending about $20 a week on a hobby is that bad , so I wouldn't feel guilty. Mind you if it bothers you that much spend about $15 and give $5 to charity instead a week.

Cheers,

BadOrb.

I agree, it was far better than I had expected...and it deviated enough from the original that it kept me wondering what would happen next. Wrapped up a bit too quick, but overall, a solid re-boot.

You misread what I said. I enjoy newer gear. I enjoy better stats. I enjoy raiding, I enjoy playing the content of the game. To get to the point where I can do that, I have two options. I can either sell CM items or I can mindlessly run dailies. I enjoyed dailies the first one or two times I ran them, but now I find them extremely boring. Running dailies feels like work to me. To get the credits, gear and enhancements I need to play the parts of the game I enjoy, I would much rather spend my time IRL making money to spend on the CM than I would spending mindless hours running dailies. Obviously there is a lot that you simply have to run dailies to get, but I try to do as little as them as possible by supplementing my time with CM purchases.

If I want a new mount that I don't have creds for, my time is spent much more effectively making money IRL, and then turning that into the mount via CM/GTN than it is grinding out dailies to build creds.

You're making the fundamentally erroneous assumption that if you don't run TOR dailies, you can just go out and earn money with that time, automatically. Maybe you can if you're a prostitute.

Or you can craft and sell items / raw materials.

Generally speaking...people feel guilty if they are guilty. Ultimately it's your money to do with as you wish. If you actually do feel guilty then perhaps you need to reassess your priorities. $500 over 6 months seems excessive to me, but I don't know how that fits into your budget (or even if you budget).

Personally, I don't feel guilty over this (or any other MMO) because I have an entertainment budget which does not detract from any other items in my life. If you can 100% say the same, that your buying items from the CM doesn't impact your life or your budget, then you've got nothing to feel guilty about.

And the "but there's hungry people" (or whatever argument) doesn't hold water unless you donated regularly before and now spend that money on the game.

I to have spent a small fortune on CM packs. My job is nothing special but it does allow me some leeway in what I spend on my hobbies. But to your question, no I do not feel guilty. It is still my money and I will spend it anyway I choose. And that does include having a subscription to two different charities. In other words, I spend my money on the things I want and give what I can to those who need. That together means I have nothing to be guilty about.

To me, the CM feels like gambling, without blowing thousands on black jack, winding up drunk, and then eventually thrown out the front door by security. You get a little bit of a thrill when you open up a pack, hoping to get the rare mount worth 4 mil, yet you wind up with some terrible looking armor and a bunch of companion rep vouchers. This then leads you to buy more and more packs, just like how a casino or the lottery works.

Yawn. Another CM = gambling post. Call it "gambling" all you want but CM packs don't fit any legal definition of gambling such as casinos and the lottery. If you win at the blackjack table or you win the lottery, you get tangible money that is accepted at any bank or store in America and can be used to buy things. If you get some item in a CM pack, it has no tangible benefit outside of being logged into this game. It's apples and oranges. CM packs are no different than buying a pack of baseball cards and that's a much more appropriate analogy. You might see an addicted gambler strung out and blowing all of their money in a casino or in line for lottery tickets, but I highly doubt you'll see them at your local Toys-R-Us buying pack after pack of baseball cards until they get that Mike Trout rookie card. By the way, if you are losing thousands of dollars at the blackjack tables, it might be time for you to find a new casino game.

I know it's my money and I'm allowed to use it any way I want, but do you guys ever feel a little guilty about spending a large amount on meaningless pixels? There are families with nothing to eat, living on welfare and food stamps, people on the street, countless kids dying daily in Africa due to malnutrition, etc... Yet here we are spending hundreds of dollars to get a cool new helmet for our digital characters in a game.

Honestly, this has absolutely nothing to do with this game. There are very few things in this life that you NEED to purchase. Most of the things we buy are discretionary spending or, at a minimum, we could certainly get by with a cheaper version of what we buy. Donate money to charity, work in a soup kitchen or downgrade your entire lifestyle if you're feeling guilt about your lifestyle, but I have no idea why you're trying to lay that guilt at the feet of this particular game or its players.

I don't feel guilty. I would only feel guilty if I made a super large purchase. The largest amount of cartel coins I bought was for around $35. I rarely buy cartel coins unless it's for cosmetic changes to my characters or to unlock an item I bought in game. Edited by Knockerz

here is how I see it: its your money, use it how you want it, whatever you spend it on is your business but personally if I could spend that money on something better I would, I just live on my monthly cartel grants never bought a cc ever (use my money for my sub and comic books :rak_03:)

No, not really. I dislike the gambling aspect of the packs, but I would have spent money on things I would have liked to have in my game. But I do not see them on CM (i.e. expanded dialogues/looks of the companions, alternative voicing options, tribute to the old games items etc), so I am fine with not really buying anything and just paying for sub. Sub on its own is really not necessary with the bells and whistles not worth the money, but hey, it's nice.
