Star Wars is all about frugality

Bioware have finally realised we all dont want to look like Power Rangers or roosters or whatever other crap they've designed, but unfortunately they also know they can stick the nice looking basic gear onto the Cartel Market and rip us off that way. Edited by Arecsa

Most Smuggler and some Imperial Agent gear look okay (and "Star Warsy", in a sense). But a lot of the stuff we see and have has been over-exaggerated and taken over the top (if you will) with massive shoulder pads and completely unnecessary gadgets and accessories, that it doesn't look that much like Star Wars any longer. Star Wars' fashion is all about pristine, albeit gorgeous and practical, simple clothes. Speaking of which, I have to confess I really don't see eye to eye with most Sith Inquisitor equipment and gear, especially the newest ones. They look like something out of a fantasy MMO. The same applies to most Sith Warrior gear.

I'm really glad how they planned Republic trooper appearance, though. But again, the level 50 gear is horrible and non-Star Warsy on all classes.

Well, to be play a bit of devil's advocate, frugality is more pertinent to the Star Wars of the 0 BBY period when The Republic is disintegrated into rag-tag underground organizations, and the remaining Jedi wear farmer's robes to conceal their identities. The Empire under Palpatine's rule is a whole different matter than it is under the aegis of the lavish Sith Lords whose notion of power is directed outwards as well as inwards. Palpatine's empire follows the strict codex of Bane's Rule of Two, in which only two Sith followers rule the entire galaxy behind the scenes and power is mostly manifested in public manipulation and political subterfuge. Before Bane the Sith ruled more or less chaotically, every Lord with their own vision, competition for grandiose displays of power were a common thing. Robed figures controlling their "muppets" was almost completely unnecessary. After Bane the Empire follows the authority of a single person. Compare Vitiate to Palpatine, the former only seems Palpatine-like with his concealed identity ruling behind the curtains, yet it is the Dark Council that more or less projects the power of the Sith through in-fighting and outward displays of domination.

In fact, Palpatine practiced a sort of minimalism, the expensive, clumsy, and baroque droid army was disbanded and simply replaced by the available armed body of troopers left after the Clone Wars. His clone army was eventually replaced by normal human beings via good old indoctrination and conscription. He himself was only baroque-ish during his time as Supreme Chancellors, during his "concealment".

I could go on about this forever, but I think it's completely natural to have outlandish armor in the era of the Old Republic. The Republic 3000 BBY has to maintain the image of power and control, just like the Empire, and thus a different style is in effect than what we witness during the original trilogy.

My main gripe is only thus - want to buy bikini without loincloth, and, for Force's sake, less rehashing of existing armours. As I have mentioned elsewhere, I am very intrigued what Bioware will do after they run out of the armour types from character creation screen :(

Most of this stuff would be solved by slightly tweaking legacy armor sets... Get rid of the over sized shoulder pads on Knight's armor, remove the life support pack on Juggernaut's, recolour Inquisitor's pink (wth? who came up with this idea) into black.

Do you even see players running around in those sets? no. WhY? because they're nasty. It's a waste of resources and someone's work. So please, tweak them and make them attractive in order to respect someone's work.

Completely agree.

I stand behind Bioware's original concepts of Jedi Consular attire, and wear them proudly.

This is, after all, the Old Republic era, and not the Galactic Empire era.

I would say more but I don't want to start anything.

Agreed, this game already looks to similar to the movie's era. We even lost the awesome look of the Sith troopers from KotOR and those hammer helmets for the republic grunts.
