A Thousand Papercuts

My one and only papercut I want you to address:

Fix the performance issues: I'm tired of having my FPS go all over the place when doing things. I'll sit at 110 fps and then engage in combat with someone (specifically warzones) and go down to almost 30 fps. This doesn't even cut the fact that when I'm on the fleet it's so laggy I drop to a measly 20 fps. The Hero Engine is suppose to be a great engine for MMOS yet it's very BLAH if you ask me. Do some coding fixes.

Specs: I5 2500k with a nVidia GeForce GTX 660

What happened to this thread? Maybe the new BW community team would like to take some of this feedback higher up :). I miss the weekly QA sessions, even if the details were sparse. At least you got a good tidbit every now and then.

Your ship fills up increasingly with companions that never get used, mostly due to incompatability with the chosen class role. Or sometimes because you think the companion is just that annoying that you rather shove him or her out of the airlock then ever let out of her little padded room.

It would be nice to have missions that are designed to be takcled with two, three and even five companions. Just have missions that have two simultaneous goals so you have to pick a B team of companions for that while you go after the other goal with the others. With the traditional difficulty that would require two 2 man teams. And if increased difficulties are added that require 3 man teams we can have two or five companions out post Makeb.

It is a limit of the phasing technology, but when you approach the dock on Fleet you can 'see' your ship through the green curtain, then as you pass through it it will vanish again until you get closer when it suddenly materialises again.

Can the take off and landing cut scenes play -after- you take off or land, instead of before it? Especially the take off happens as soon as you enter the ship. The landing animation is less out of place, but only happens when you try to leave the ship. It would be nice if optionally you can activate them from the bridge with a take off/land button.

Military ships would dock at a military base, not at commercial spaceports... Even if it is the same area it would be guarded by military personel.

People on bases stand around doing nothing. It would be nicer if they are walking around more so that it gives a bit more impression of actually being busy.

Different styles of entertainers in cantinas than the same (holo) twilek dancers everywhere. (for a republic that outlaws slavery there is a lot of the impression of it going on even on the capitol planet).

A difficulty slider? Almost inevitably you will outlevel planets, at which point you blaze through the remaining missions without a thought. If you are lucky you are not so far ahead that your next planet still challenges you a little. A difficulty slider which increases the effective level of enemies that engage you, and in instances increases their numbers and boss/minion distribution, would make outleveling the planet not quite so tedious.

Off duty clothes. These can be player crafted only and follow the original idea for social clothes (in that they have no stats). Purely for roleplaying purposes.

A personal and a public bio. The public bio is some information that everybody who inspects your character can see. The personal bio is what you want to keep track of about your character (i.e. more extensive information that is not public knowledge). You should be able to attach a personal bio to other people's characters as well. Which of course means that it is like a cookie, something that is stored on your own computer not on the servers.

Disclaimer: I gives no care if a workaround exists. Workarounds are not fixes and are the sign of lazy game maintenance.

-Can my execute moves (like spinning strike) actually start to work at 30% now like listed or do I have to keep waiting for 29%?

-Can I get the other half of my double-bladed lightsaber back?

-Can leaping/running to the enemies on the ramp behind ISS-7 NOT glitch us through the floor and make us quit the game to reset, or is this bug from beta going to be left in the game indefinitely?

-Traveling to fleet used to put us in the Carrick Station 'inner ring' at the end of the loading screen. Now we're all the way back at our ships. Can this change that makes things LESS convenient be reversed?

-Is my companion EVER going to stop leaving me just because I get on my speeder or use rocket boots? It even happens outside of groups.

-Is my companion EVER going to stay away when I dismiss him, or are they always going to be right back on my screen when I get off a speeder (I really don't know how you guys can mess that up in 2 ways), get off a taxi, or change zones?

-Please take the annoying announcement about companions in operations out and only display it if you actually try to summon a companion in an operation.

-When am I going to be able to view my ship tab at any time instead of having to do some stupid mount/dismount/stop talking to vendor thing?

-Why does my inventory disappear when I close a vendor or locker screen when I had it open in the first place? This one is insanely annoying and happens many times a day. Just like the companions thing above - the game shouldn't do what it wants to do, it should simply use last known information, and the fact that I opened up the window myself means it's to stay open until I dismiss it.

-'Someone' bought 'the item'? Really? With all the records you keep and sooper-dooper metrics the developers refer to all the time, you'd think something as simple as who bought what would be easily sent to you.

-Are comparative tooltips from things in your guild bank STILL not showing all the stats and are actually showing false numbers?

The abundance of "instances" in the major city (aka the fleet). It would be a nice feeling, and it is certainly something that i miss from other mmos, to have a sense of oneness when it comes to traversing your home in the game. the fleet as it is is too instanced, it would be nice if in the future, a major player hub can have more walkable space. something that is not, what feels like, a one dimensional city which is what we have right now in the form of the fleet.

...

...

I just thought I'd say really quick, there's probably nothing at all wrong with your moves like Spinning Strike, it has to do with the fact that the displayed health % is not displaying decimal points. Thus, when the target is getting extremely close to reaching 30%, it's actually somewhere around 30.42%, which is not yet to the necessary level, however when it's displayed, the decimal points are just chopped off, so it displays at "30%" on your screen.

Now almost never is a health level going to be *exactly* 30.00%, so when the target's health level reaches at-or-below 30%, it's really somewhere around 29.87%, and again for the display of the % it chops off the decimal point and shows you "29%".

To describe the quirk in very short words, when you see the displayed health suddenly switch to "29%", the target's health level has *just* dipped below the 30.00% level. I'm sure it's working exactly as advertised.

  • add expand / collapse all buttons in the crafting window

  • pricing memory for the GTN or bulk listing for unstackable items
for example, when i'm placing items that have to be placed one-at-a-time, like armorings, i would like to be able to set one price and have a set window of time (at least until i close the GTN window) where all items of the same type will be automatically listed for the price i set.

  • i want an option to go into edit mode for skill points rather than refund all of them
sometimes i only want to change one or two points around

  • The Advanced class bag should look like other containers.
  • The Advanced class bag should be presented in the award screen for the mission.
  • The "Welcome to 50" mail should be triggered by hitting 50 instead of leaving your ship (hangar?) on Fleet at 50.

-You guys fixed the bug of committing skill points dismounting you from speeders, but you didn't fix the rocket boots suffering from the same thing. Why?

-I'm REALLY tired of finding out that the reason why I had no companion affection gain throughout a conversation was because I began the conversation on a speeder. There's no reason for this. Please fix it.

-Why is my skill bar STILL unlocked when I log into a character?

-Why is it so hard for my rocket boost to be a rocket boost for 12 whole seconds?

Almost 70 pages and this thread hasn't been touched in 2+ weeks? I'd love to hear some responses to the above post =)

Bioware... are you there? are you listening, lol?

I too wonder where did BW go? I was referred to this thread after filing numerous bug reports through the ticket system, because some of these issues are just bugs that need to be fixed.

My "papercuts":

* STOP MESSING WITH MY CAMERA! That means don't shake it. I have enough vision problems and coupled with the problems of low FPS, it is really hard to target things. Also, I prefer to have my camera sitting slightly above and behind my head so I can see what is happening around me. Yet every time the UI screen reloads (exit area, ship, speeder, elevator, or conversation) my camera gets snapped back and I have to reposition it where I want it. Sometimes I get thrown into battle immediately following a conversation and my camera is stuck behind an object and I can't see anything. Let me lock it into position. The game knows where my boots are located, and that my weapon stays at the end of my arm, so why can't it remember where I mounted my camera? Also, fix the Smart Camera setting in Preferences. It is supposed to keep my camera facing the same direction as my character. It doesn't. In battle, if I have to turn to fight a mob that is behind me, my camera stays put and I can't see what I am shooting at. This too has been broken and reported many times over the past year.

* FIX THE DRUNKARD'S VOTE CANTINA! Why can't I talk to my companion in this cantina on Coruscant? Is there a reason I need to take them over to the Dealer's Den to talk? This has been broken since I started playing in February 2012 -- over a year ago. How hard can it be to set a program flag to make companion conversation possible? The area is identified as a "Rest Zone" so why isn't companion conversation automatically enabled by this flag?

* FIX THE PERFORMANCE ISSUES! I do not understand why a computer system that is in full compliance with the required system specs cannot perform adequately enough to complete all missions. In space combat, there are certain missions that I cannot complete. Syvris Evacuation is a low-level mission that shows gray on my mission log. At level 50 with Grade 5+ ship upgrades, I should be able to blow right through this mission. But I can't. The FPS is so bad and the video is so choppy that I am unable to target anything and consequently fail the mission. This issue has been reported several times to Tech Support along with detailed diagnostic logs. I have done ALL of the tips and tweaks that can be found all over the internet and the issue persists. I can play WoW with three or four addons and have no problems. The issues are here in SWTOR and it is not my system (it meets all game requirements).

* FIX THE KNOWN ISSUES! The Known Issues list gets longer and longer with every expansion. Many bugs were introduced when new operations and flashpoints were introduced. More were added when Legacy was added. More were added with Free-to-Play and even more with the addition of the Cartel Market. The Patch Notes show us what issues are being addressed and they are mostly Cartel Market issues. When will we see the others getting fixed? Like Gear Preview for companions so we can see what gear looks like on our companions!

* ALLOW US TO VENDOR CARTEL CRAP! I understand the concept of the Cartel packs and the need to fill them with "junk" items and sprinkle in a few rares. What makes no sense is that we cannot sell the junk to a vendor. Each character only gets one ship, therefore they can only have one C2-N2 companion. So after I receive one C2-N2 customization, I should be able to get rid of any extras without dumping them on the GTN. I don't like the Covert Armor Series and think it was a dumb idea. Why can't I sell it to a vendor? And how many Imperial/Republic Banners does one player really need? Yet they are so prevalent the GTN is full of them, dropping the price to a point where it is pointless to sell them there (not that they are such a hot item to sell anyway). Vendors will buy ALL of our junk items, including Bound items -- but not Cartel Crap? Why not? Since we can't preview what gear will look like before we try it on and it becomes bound, we get more bound items that we should be able to sell to a vendor.

* ALLOW US TO USE FURNITURE! I play on Roleplay servers because I enjoy roleplay. It would be nice to be able to sit on furniture. Not just in my ship, but in cantinas as well. On my ship, why can't I sleep on my bed? Even the sleep emote has no animation. I can sit, but I can't lie down? Why can't I use the cargo locker in my cabin? Instead of worrying about adding whole new planets, why not add some detail to the existing worlds? Make furniture useable. Add some random loot drops (security chests) in remote areas for those of us who enjoy exploring those dead-end valleys, caves, or climbing up on all that shelving/debris that is lying around everywhere. Maybe hide a surprise piece of cargo in a shipwreck.

* CHAT EMOTE KEYBINDS. The current emote window is useless in combat. Clicking through all of those menus to get to the /help emote is ridiculous when you can just type /help. That said, it would be extremely useful to be able to keybind those emotes for use in combat, especially warzones. Allowing macros would be even better, so we could keybind or even quickslot "Incoming East" or "Stealth Detected" or something similar.

I really enjoy this game and I think it has SO much potential. But until the bugs on the Known Issues list start getting addressed, I am not going to pay for any expansion packs. I don't need to level beyond 50 to roleplay and I can always start another alt. I think it is time that BioWare started addressing the players' concerns more than focusing on new ways to extract money from us.

To the OP, good job on getting this thread going. We need to start advertising this thread on other forums to get the word out. Tell your guild mates and post it on your guild forums. Talk about it on Facebook and Twitter. It is the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. Let's start squeaking!

These are my particular concerns, and a lot has been left out:

The infuriating /r chat. Not that this wasn't bad enough before but now being a guild leader I've had to apologize for not responding to my members, and basically have them take a number so I can address their chat one at a time. This is ridiculous. Talk about putting a damper on your social life. Why has this not been fixed???

The Cartel. I know how much money it must bring in, but is that being reinvested to make it a better game? I see a day soon where this will be known as “the Cartel Game”, or was “used to be awesome but then that Cartel thing took over, etc, etc”. It smacks of Second Life where how much money you have to spend IRL directly affects how much you can do and enjoy in the game. That's just sad when it comes to Star Wars and it's supposedly underlying message of the lowly rising to become strong based on their innate and practiced abilities. Aren't we better than mere trinkets and commercialism?. The gameplay is now alarmingly commercial and is affecting the enjoyment I had before the Cartel surfaced. IMO, it's gotten out of hand and appears to be rocketing toward being totally out of hand. The first week of the Cartel there was someone in general chat on Dromund Kaas bemoaning that they'd spend $200 dollars in three days on Cartel packs. There was a glitch that told me I was f2p for a week and I couldn't use my crew skills. It took 5 days to get the ticket answered, they were presumably too buy with cartel related questions. I don't log in because I want to feel sad or angry at what's going on behind the scenes, I want to be immersed in the game.

Having to type and retype the price of each and every item I list on the gtn.

Having windows close out other windows, invariably the one I need/want to stay open. When I am trying to reply to an email sender, I have to stop and close the first email window, then open my backpack to click on the gear.

The help/in game ticket system. Often I will attempt to start a new ticket and it will make an update to my old ticket. I have no idea why. Not getting to talk to a GM as a matter of course. It's happened twice and seemed very random, the rest of the time I've gotten a written, often patent response. Often my tickets get simply deleted with no response.

Boring unattractive gear. I admit it I've gotten more than a few laughs over the past year with this in general: "It's gray and not the usual brown? Sell it for 75k, it's RP gear!" This game clearly has a few winning items (slave girl outfit) that although very nicely done seem to want us to be clones. I've had some fun mixing and matching with this or that but when I think back to Wow and my 'robes of insight' and that mace from outlands that trailed little bubbles...I get misty. Granted, wow deliberately went overboard and I'd hate to see that glowing green glaive and massive spiky shoulders running everywhere. But there can believably be more colors, several more designs, more variety of gear and weapons. I've noticed subtle improvements happening so I hope this message has sunk in from previous players.

Looking like a puppet on a string when I jump. It's goofy and not inspiring.

The thing that forces everyone to "Disco" is totally inappropriate and just a tool for griefers to ruin gameplay for others, and it pretty much cancels out all RP in an entire Cantina on a moment's notice. Maybe you could make some items unavailable on RP realms entirely and many many players would be very much happier.

Making more companions available to be romanced, why does Gault always throw my gifts down the garbage chute? Why does Khem Val laugh me off nervously? And I'm female! Must this universe be so close minded?

Do something about the x-rated trolling 'bro-talk' that everyone has to put up with, especially on Dromund Kaas, Hutta, Korriban and the Imperial Fleet. It's pretty much a given that on my realm you'll have to /cleave general if you don't want to listen to jokes about rape, child molestation, animal cruelty, etc. Turning off the language filter helps a little but it's still pretty explicit, especially in the hours right after school lets out.

More zone-wandering monsters, preferably huge. I admit the Fel Reavers and Devilsaurs of WoW always used to make the game much more exciting and interesting when pursuing questlines in otherwise tedious areas.

What's with the short hair? Nothing but short hairdo's is a total drag.

A character hair/complexion/cosmetics/scars option: aka 'barber shop' like in wow. As there it would be appropriate to keep body shape and skin color and other logical things, but there is no reason one should wear cheese danishes their entire lives, and make up supposedly comes off nightly. I know this would be a sizable undertaking but the inability to remove the rashly chosen hairdo and clawmarks from my 50's face has caused me to have to start over from scratch, with far less enthusiasm for my new BH's epic journey.

Some simple key function to enter the title of an item into the gtn search, yes, like in WoW.

The gtn search still confuses me and my members and I often get questions about how they can find cartel RP gear and other items without typing in the exact title. On my first character I randomly whispered someone nearby and they were nice enough to explain about the GTN, and for the first time in a month I was actually able to put something up for sale.

More cool places to hang out on the Imp side. The fleet is getting pretty gray and depressing after a year. Can you add something like an arboretum or open arcade with plants and lights and stuff to fiddle with? I've noticed a certain claustrophobia settling in.

Fishing? OMG no fishing?

More Holiday events, hopefully geared to different levels where players can earn cool stuff and not just buy off the Cartel?

Dcing out of Black Talon when it does the warp jump at the end of the flashpoint. I've know this is a timeworn well-known glitch for many players. Considering this is the first instanced dungeon many players do ever in their lives you'd think it could be fixed.

Crafting, other than biochem seems to be fairly pointless anymore. This has made the only regular means of making money in game on my server selling Cartel items (which favors wealthy people who can spend a ton of irl money on them over the rest of us who can't. Very very bothersome and unfair) or selling FP drops, and farming dailies. Things like training skills become highly expensive while still too low to make the money to pay for them. I've had all of what I used to reliably depend on selling from my cybertech: robot parts, mods, mounts and mandalorian iron, the previous week, come back the following week with no sales at all, and the trend not reversing. When I look on the gtn suddenly there are 7-10 of the same item listed by one or two ppl for a third of the price, when before there would be only 1-2 listings or none. I assume the influx of masses of f2p ppl leveling their skills all at once would explain why, but so does the fact crafting items just don't cut the mustard compared to alternatives. Suddenly I'm down to 20k and must stop gaming and spend 2-3 hours a day just farming dailies to do simple things like repairs and skill-ups. If basic character development was more affordable and crafting simply still made desirable items of some kind...I used to enjoy crafting and now it's a waste of time.

A decent easy to reference game guide online, like Wowhead for WoW. I've given up on quests more than once because I had no idea how to use the thing, where the guy was, fought my way out of a long temple only to realize I hadn't clicked the thing that came out after I clicked the thing. Argh.

MyRolePlay window/function thing, for SWTOR, like the WoW addon.

The stats of gear not showing up. This often happens when items are sitting in the mail. But then sometimes it doesn't, showing gear with no visible stats at all.

As funny as it is forcing my companion to float away slowly from the balloon over Tatooine, their actions in game look downright creepy most of the time when at rest. They stand on furniture, other players, and looking like some freaked out mannequin with their head doing a weird tilt while they try to give you nightmares. Maybe just not staring at my toon with their arms pointed down like a doll's would be enough. I kind of like forcing them off the balloon and watching them flail in midair as they float away. Keep that.

Deep water and a swim ability as well as underwater vehicles.

Animal mounts.

Keybind that allows you to rapidly scroll between hotkey bars. Seriously I still don't know how I survive with one hotbar and having to use my mouse to click everything else. This was probably my very first help ticket and it took a while to sink in that it just wasn't part of the UI. Totally crazy! In WoW and Rift I could scroll through my bars with my left hand using Alt+1. By using that repeatedly it would automatically bring up the next bar, then the next, etc all the way through 6 bars. All you had to do was remember the stuff you used most on each bar, maybe take a quick glance to be sure which bar you'd brought up, and voila, easy peasy.. That allowed me to use my right hand to click 'button 3, bar 6' without looking t what I was doing.

Now I have to sit and evaluate each new ability as something I can get by without or not, because I will have to drop my gaze, search for my mouse cursor and reach for the button on the right side column. How about having six bars constantly viewable on my screen taking up space and reminding me this UI is anything but forgettable? It's always front and center, taking up a lot of space, looking ugly and to be fumbled with instead of enjoying the game. With the seemingly simple ability to scroll quickly with a hotkey I never had more than two bars at the bottom of my screen in WoW.

Weather of some kind when you're planetside, and skies that turn. Sunrises and sunsets, shadows that change direction with the angle of the day/night. I know we get a bit of rain sometimes on Dromund Kaas but it's barely noticeable. I do like the way the planets turn when you look at them out a viewport. Why doesn't the sun move in the sky therefore when you're on such a planet? Having it always be midday on every planet is just tiring and blah.

This feature has been in the game since launch; More than that, you can switch to particular quickbars by keybind.

Chat reply. Still broken as ****. You hit reply, it says [whisper to name1] : <msg>, meanwhile name2 sends you a tell, chat frame still says [whisper to name1] : msg but sends it to name2 anyway. Add in support to tab through a list of people who have whispered you, a la WoW's chat system and make it work in a rational, and more importantly, USABLE manner.

Companions always having you fixated with their gaze. It looks very unnatural in a lot of cases, such as when you stand on an elevation and they bend their backs and necks looking like something straight out of the exorcist.

Just have them look straight ahead.

And it's creepy. I feel like Aric is eyeballing me! You know how officers love to be eyeballed!

-Why is it that logging out while on top of an object you can interact with (mailbox, locker, GTN console) causes you to load the character stuck inside of it and only quick travel, fleet pass, or something else like that can get you out?

-Why does typing swtor.com into my address bar only half the time bring me to the English version of the site? Why, when it does not, does clicking on the English tab at the top left NOT fix the problem?

-Why am I not allowed to use my quick travel on certain parts of planets? Re move this restriction and let me use it anywhere.

-Stop taking away my bonus missions just because I've moved on to the next step of the main mission when the original objective (usually killing lots of things) is still entirely obtainable. The Imperial Balmorran mission Crash Course is a perfect example of this.

-When I die and revive, I shouldn't be targeting anyone. This goes for warzones too.

-You shouldn't have to jump to go up the tiny step to exit the Jedi Temple on Tython.

-I should be able to click on an elevator button even if my camera is resting against a phase wall.

-Why don't the mailboxes in the Lower Promenade show up on my minimap?

-Ctrl+Left Click to preview something in my inventory shouldn't also pick up the item.

-Allow me to edit my companion and ship and reverse engineer items while in a taxi, please.

-Please implement an option in the interface editor to the Large Tooltip to have it display on top of other window.

1. Adjustable font for the guild bank and guild roster windows. A GM who goes blind won't be of much use to the members.

2. When I jump off a building, or a rock, or whatever, my companion should follow me! Not run around and take the stairs like a little old lady.

3. When I kill something inside a story area, it should STAY DEAD! And, they should stay dead no matter what, even if I log out, get disconnected, alt-tab away, or die and come back from the med center. It's my story, and having enemies respawn is not realistic! Not to mention infuriating.

4. Please don't have NPCs refer to my clothing. My Jedi isn't wearing brown robes, nor is my BH wearing a "tin can."

An option to keep a translucent or opaque background (rather than only on mouse-over) on the chat window for ease of reading.

When we board our ship, do not have a cut scene to where we head into space. As such, play that only after we select a destination or choose a "Launch" or "Depart" option from within the cockpit.

For the love of all... have someone revisit the text that appears on the chat option wheels and revise them to more appropriately reflect what your character will say. I have had to hit [ESC] so many times because what the chat wheel said and what my character actually says are that different. Remember... emotion is lost in text!

On that same note... Lightside/Darkside choices need a little bit of a revisit and tweaking. Not all of them make sense, and in many cases (what some of us consider as "obvious") alternative choices need to be added. Things are not always restricted completely to "let them go" or "kill them". http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=611722

On UI

To be able to see the damage fonts in huge bosses in operations! Instead of the damage fonts appearing on top of the boss' head, maybe give us an option to switch the overlay to the point of impact or the body. Something that looks like http://i.imgur.com/CN7yTzR.jpg.

As a main DPS, it somewhat improves my gameplay when i see those numerous small numbers appear on the boss. I'm sure other DPS players will appreciate being able to see their damage fonts as well!
