Bronze_Elemental
Just a large enough space rock. Why waste all those resources when all they had to do was fit an engine to an asteroid?
ArawnNox
Because moon-sized space stations with planet-killing guns are more awesome than space-rocks. Edited January 31, 2012 by ArawnNox
Wolfninjajedi
Planetary shield generators, the death star could rip through those asteroids could not. "A planetary shield (or defense grid) was a large scale deflector shield designed to protect an entire planet from bombardment, falling debris, or other hazards. " "Battlestations such as Torpedo Spheres or Death Stars were designed to penetrate planetary shields." SDFX
Seeking realism from your space fantasy is a failed endeavor from the start. The Death Star was a cool story telling device for the movie plot. Later works attempted to paint it as more of a direct extension of the Emperor’s personal power and potential beat stick for keeping the Imperial Navy in line and following his orders rather than just a planet popper. Looking at it entirely in the lines of reason as a waste and nonsensical project, fail to account for how it captured people’s imagination as a plot device in the real world and became a house hold name and multi-billion dollar icon anyway. I wish I could invent that kind of stupid. Edited January 31, 2012 by SDFX

davack
Please, if the orks saw what a battlestation like that could do they would try to build their own. On a different note, the death star wasn't made to only kill a planet. It was more of a terror device, forcing planets into complacency more than anything else. ErikModi
The Death Star was indeed part of the Empire's doctrine of Rule Through Fear. Tarkin says it himself: "Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station." The whole point was to create a Sword of Damocles to hang over the head of the whole galaxy to keep them well-behaved.
Pirate_Ron
Yeah the Death Star was more to inspire terror than to be used frequently. Kinda like the Atomic Bomb. We only had to use it as an example to show we weren't afraid to.
