Hi all!
In the light of the news regarding the upcoming patch/expansion/update shown at E3 2012, scheduled for later this year, something suddenly dawned on me.
The current legacy level and character level are both 50. If the level cap will be raised by 10, we might see the legacy level also raise to a max of 60 also. Players applaud the excellent 3-act-story and leveling experience but soon get bored at level 50 and WANT MORE CONTENT. As well as the standard new operations / warzones / planets / content, soon we will get a new companion. Currently players can send out an extra companion on crew skill missions every 10 levels, roughly speaking. The HK-51 droid will be the new companion and obtaining it requires completing puzzle quests by characters on both Imperial and Republic sides within the one legacy. So this fits nicely with the legacy system and the level system too. A NEW difficulty rating for flashpoints and operations at level 60 would be welcome! Its quite easy to see how this could be the new SWTOR future content model and i hope it will be something like this. A LARGE content update at the end of each year. However, paying $50 PER YEAR is pretty steep compared to WoW's 3-year expansion cycle. I have a solution.
I believe BioWare could blow away its competition yet again with another mould-breaking step in terms of how to sell us an end-of-year update. Simply subtract your legacy level from the maximum legacy level and pay a dollar per legacy level to update your account to play the latest expansion. So for example if your were legacy level 25, then you would pay $25 dollars for the newest update. If you were legacy level 50, you pay nothing more than your subscription.
Not only would this encourage players to stay active on their servers by growing & maintaining a solid community & user base, but also reward them for their continued loyalty into the future. Level 60 players could help out lowbie players and still be rewarded with Legacy XP. Lowbie plays will get through content much faster with higher level players around and their Legacy XP will skyrocket. Remember, unlike WoW, grouping with other players no matter their level, increases everyones XP for completing missions. There are even legacy unlocks coming in 1.3 to further BOOST this. When a player is ready for the new level 51+ content, they could pay upfront or grind more Legacy levels with the help of higher level players, unlike WoW's archaic approach to grouping and XP rewards. Its Win/Win for both high and low level players, and for Bioware keeping subscription levels up.
Not everyone will get to legacy level 50 by the time this update happens at the end of the year. The few players that do will probably want a special reward for their loyalty to the game and I believe it would be fitting to grant them the expansion for free. After all, this is a fresh new game with subscriber numbers that are overshadowed by other games. World of Warcraft are obviously the kingpin of MMO's right now and have been for many years, but even they had a very slow start.
Energising an excellent game such as SWTOR with consistant yearly updates in this manner is exactly what players need. Continuing subscribers is exactly what SWTOR needs. A healthy competition is what the MMO landscape needs.
So if you read all that, would you consider this a fair and equitable solution to improve populations, active subscribers and the future of SWTOR?
