  1. Add me to the list. Started right after the last update about two weeks ago. Launcher works, hit PLAY and black screen. Background task not there or never got loaded. Saw something about deleting Bit"sosmething or other" from past issues but haven't found that thread again yet.
  2. how about making the update optional on startup instead of mandator. Let the player say whether or not to do the update then or schedule a delay. I realize this has several coordination issues (new and old versions on server? for example) but as was said, many folks around the world could then schedule the update. I have been faced with literally hours worth of delay on update day with downloads etc. While most games have this issue, it is inconvenient. I have actually had to talk to my wife once in a while.
  3. My response as to why is for style. There are PVP servers and option why not level the playing field servers. I play more for the story than the sociopathic/psychopathic killing sprees. Also, the minor challenges of the 'old school' levelling. This auto function is too much follow (or join) the crowd. If I wanted a new side scroll I would get addicted to the latest Ior latest -1) Lara Daft. IMHO.
  4. TJI: I read about the first 1/3 of this thread and the last 1/3. I don't know if auto leveling is here to stay, but I don't like it. To me, it is turning the experience into a 3d side scroller since doing the extra side quests don't really matter. Stick to the main line, level that way and you have the challenge. Side quests that give you the additional points or gear only are wasted when you get to the next (or go back to a previous) planet. The avatars only learn what they are allowed to learn up to a point I may be sour g****** a tad. I now have 2 avatars at level 65 that can't proceed in their story lines. I have a level 64 trooper cut back to level 50 and therefore does not have enough firepower to take on the next boss, who are level 50 as well but Champions, which I am not. I have another avatar, also level 65 (I think, haven't played this one in a while), who has suddenly found themself in what was a solo quest that at about 90% complete is suddenly in a group Heroic +4. I'll nudge over to the sidescroll and avoid this quest for my other avatars. These are not necessarily enough to chase me away, but they do take some of the bloom off the rose. Side scrolling was great 20 years ago but is rather quaint now. Note to EA/BW: The asterisked word above as not an immoral sexual act but fruit used to make wine and jelly. Interesting filter you have there.
  5. This is a question and a Kvetch. With the new game extension to level 65 and changes I created a new avatar to go the whole way from level 1 to level 65. (Jedi Knight.) I actually hit level 65 fairly quickly. I have done several planets with the new 'weaken to be fair' (which makes leveling early a waste, by me) and started the macrobinocular quest solo. Did most of it, including the car hops and Maki'Voro, solo. My kvetch is at the private landing zone I suddenly found my quest was Heroic 4. I am now at Find The Shroud, having zapped the droids and needing to open the door. I am still solo. Is it possible to go any further solo? The kvetch is if you are going to cripple my skills by cutting my level by 2/3s, don't then put me in a quadruple difficulty quest that really does require 4 players ( based on what research I have been able to find) without permission or warning. I enjoy the game, Otherwise I would not have kept my subscription for multiple years.. But this last set of changes may have lowered the bridge instead of raising it.
  6. same thing for me. if there is something else, I can't find it. I am a Jedi counselor in this case.
  7. TJI: A little late in the flow, but how about changing companions. That is, maybe a way to have Vette swap with Kira or something. Okay, Empire vs Republic might be an issue, but within the grand fleet stations or as an event on the common planets?
  8. tji: I have been having lag issues for the last couple of weeks, But it has been inconsistent. I also have indications that the problem is possibly routers ( jumps outside of my 'neighborhood') and my ISP. My ISP has had other, only indirectly related, issues I attribute to a 'hardware' upgrade across it's turf and the impact of weather in recent times (I reread Punxatawny Pete's prediction) on copper, etc. Bottom line, I have had lag issues, but I almost think it is the folks kept home from school on old equipment along the route rather than a Bioware problem. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, but welcome to global warming.
  9. I am really a newbie at the packs. I was a 'virgin' until I bought a 24x hyper expecting to take most of the 24 to get the armor I wanted. After going through all 24, I found I had about 1/2 the armor I wanted. When I went to look today, not even a replacement hyper available. I now have a bad experience with the hypers. I don't think I am going to put more real world dollars (few as I admit they are) into packs for a while. I understand random, but when you buy a 24x, you should get at least one of each. I hope the revs are reading.
  10. I get intermittent lags on one of my systems, but relatively consistent and smooth performance fro the other. I am not sure what the issue is. In general, my 'normal' internet connection is okay. Both systems are i7 but one is a bastardized W8.x and the other is pure 8.1. It is the pure 8.1 that has the problems. The other odd thing is the cleaner one is on an extended WiFi (which is on another house floor and may be buffered, at least has some internal memory for that reason) but the other is local (same floor, <10' from WiFi modem). Bottom line, some conflagration of box config and ISP. I lean towards ISP because my wife has occasional issues with her I5 W8.1, but I really thing both are involved.
  11. Is the system supposed to be up now? I am at 1pm Eastern US, but every time I try to log in I get an empty server list. I have run the repair tool and it says everything is okay. as did the launcher diagnostic. Any ideas? Last time I got error 4001
  12. TJI-Not on AMD, I am an Intel Stockholder, so don't use them. But, I play on three different 'laptops'. Toshiba Satellite I7, Sony Viaio I7 and Microsoft Surface. Only problem I have is my networking and security software. I have to wait for my scanners to finish when I log in, and have occasional issues with my network connetivitiy on the Surface. I am a retired DBA who used to run his own business (still have the business, but not pushing it). I have not bought a desktop in 5 or more years. My only real problem has been that my older games won't work on W8.1 (In the Sony case, W7/8 as sony doesn't support Windows on my model, but I did try an upgrade. It has the Nvidia driver to use with another game, which shall go nameless, but whose initials are TSW.) If you have $500 to spend on a laptop instead of a video card, you should be okay.
  13. Additional comment: I used to have a Samsung tablet (8x11 screen) that I think worked okay, I installed SWTOR to work off a USB but gave the device to my wife after I had the broken screen repaired. It had worked okay, but I haven't tried it recently.
  14. Minor addition: haven't even turned on my desktops in months. Only once or so sisnce I retired.
  15. I have three laptops these days. A Surface, a Toshiba and a Sony. SWTOR works well on the Toshiba and the Sony. I am not sure if the Surface problem is the memory manager ( I have seen issues in other apps) or my network (extended 2 tier, new stuff for me), it only works on first app after boot. But no issue with the other 2. (One is Nvidia, one Intel on the video driver.) These day, SWTOR should work on a laptop. But beware the network.
  16. I am a subscriber. I receive 500 coins a month. I don't get the security 100 or so because I have a WIndows phone, not android or IOS. If there is something I really want I buy enough coins to flesh out my desires. I just did this for my Trooper. I recently bought a bunch to try the packs, but haven't really decided to use them yet. Point being, if you like the game and you can by a really good armor set every 3 months. If you want more, pay for it. To quote Robert Heinlein, TANSTAAFL (There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch).
  17. I am conflicted by Sir Arthur's (see my entry above) FTL and races of super Uri Gellers/Kresgens (Jedi and Sith both). I am not going to make a firm decision---I don't have too. All I have to do is enjoy. To cite the true philosopher "May the Schwarz be with you."
  18. And a better dragon is the one in the E.E. 'Doc' Smith Lensman series.
  19. Jumping in late but to quote the late Sir Arthur C. Clarke (as near as I can remember) "Any sufficiently advanced science appears as magic to the less knowledgeable." From a mathematician that was one of the developers of radar, the initial proponent of satellites and the author a several books of note, such as the Rama series, Tales From The White Hart and others. If in the future, with 'gadgets', it is science fiction. If in the past without them, it is fantasy. Dragons don't count (Any else read 'The Tool Maker's Koan'?)
  20. i manage 5 computers {3 for me, 2 for my wife}. 4 of the 5 are now 8.1. {2 are slates and 2 are laptops}. i have set swtor on both slates and the i7 laptop. (My wife doesn't play swtor.) the only problems have been in one area where my WiFi signal is 3 out of 5 bars on my current slate (an MS Surface). the other slate (a Samsung APTV) has performance issues, but it is a slow dual atom, not an i5 or i7. As Long as I am not in the WiFi slow spot, I am not having significant problems on any of the 8.1 computers. (the 5th computer is from a vendor that stopped windows support for my model at 7, even though it was top of the line o months earlier. (they do support it for their then lower models.} I still play swtor on it but use it mostly for TSW.) in any case, no major issues with 8.1. the usual windowed/full screen cursor and height/width settings in the client file ( my fault but explains the screen size issue.)
  21. Orange are modifieable from drops and GTC pieces. THeir worthi is how much you can find or spend on mods. Rah.
  22. THanks for the input., minor responses. The reason for multiple builds is to try to find my style--or as I hit what I felt was a wall, I started a new one to change styles. I am still not sure. The skills of the Sith Sorcerer with the morality of a Jedi,, the accuracy of the sniper (at least if they are as oood as the real world) with the attitude of the smuggler. I am more into the immersion/story rather than the socio/psycho-pathic genocide of various species that seems to be the background to many threads. I have maxed out what I could buy, short of repair bills. I have used lower build just to get funds for the Q* ones, and probably should do more sides (pvp, etc), but the last half a dozen or more I have done haven't been worth it equipment wise (not to mention the groups where my healer was yelled at for not adding DPS but trying to heal folks and everyone else did need instead of greed.) What I find is that opposition I could take on yesterday cleans my clock today if I get killed, sign off and come back later. Once or twice, I would say a bad streak on the randomizer, but I am getting too much of a patter on Q.. Couple with the things mentioned before, the 'wall' theory seems to hold. I am willing to concede my tactics may be too real world for an MMO (or single) (I am not a believer in the drugs that seem to be a heavy part of succeeding, too much time working in/with law enforcement), and I am willing to learn/change. I just want to know if it is worth it. But if it is me, I'll adapt. Donna Summers sang 'I will Survive.' I'll sing "I will Subscribe.' At least until I need to change my blood pressure meds. (But the EPA will nail me for noise pollution if I do sing.)
  23. I presume General is the right place for this. I am a casual player, I think. I have been a subscriber for a few months, with a bunch of builds. None of my builds have been able to get very far in Quesh. I am a solo player primarily. I do side quests, etc, but am not in a guild because I typically only play for an hour or so, two with non TOR distractions. My question is for us casual solo's (sorry Napoleon), is 40 about the limit? Given the now high cost of repairs and apparently low hit/damage rates I have been getting in recent weeks do I have to get more groupified to progress? I am not against it, but it is not my style, at least not yet.
  24. How about a variation: Mixed. That is, a version of the game that is both MMO and single player offline. Full game would be MMO, but a stripped down version that is either just the main line with no side quests or just side quests based on the last level played online. If the current game is to go, as the opener hopes not, then the balance of the game can be made available, say to subscribers. My intent here is both because I like the game and want to keep it, as above, but consider, it can also give us players something to do when the servers are not available. What do yousen folksen thing/
  25. 1- whether or not I was any good as a programmer, I am a retired Database Administrator who designed, programmed and built some of the largest databases in their day, including at one time what I was told was the largest unclassified relational database around. I wrote utilities, TSRs and apps from DOS360 to MVS to Unix to Linux to MS-DOS...........I am retired, not fired. As I have said elsewhere, I have programmed in languages others can't spell (can you spell C ?) 2- There has to be a better way than to complety reskill, like have the trainer (every port sees to have one) give subscribers a free option to do so, or to change a couple or something. I am really a casual player in all my MMO's and don't necessarily remember what my choices were. 3- I admit this thread was more a rant/kvetch than anything else. but have you read the other threads? this is mild. And I am staying a subscriber. maybe I am just shaking my cane at you whippersnappers:o, but nothing in Support seemed to coincide with my kvetch, so General it was. May the Schwartz be with you.
