  1. The launcher is defunct for me with that two-year-old bug which causes the launcher to freeze at 80% or 96%.

Just a thought, but you might do this:

    • Right-click on the Star Wars: the Old Republic icon on your desktop and select Troubleshoot Compatibility (Windows XP, Service Pack 2 works for me)
    • Right-click on that icon again and select Run as Administrator

Likely, this will allow you to complete the download and subsequently launch the game.

I make this suggestion not knowing if you're trying to update the latest patch or if you're attempting a complete download of the game.

  2. It's remotely possible your router is the issue, but before you go about changing channels, try this:

    • From your Start screen, open PC Settings
    • Click on Network
    • An icon for current network will appear at right, click on that icon
    • Directly under "Find devices and content" a slider will be shown, make sure ON is indicated (if and when you access public networks you should switch this to OFF)

    Good luck

This is only for Windows 8 and 8.1

  3. Try this to disable your touchpad :

    1. Open Device Manager.

    2. Select Mice and other pointing devices.

    3. Right-click Touchpad. In the popup select Disable.

    Hope this helps.

As for OP's problem, I've done a bit of research, finding this is a common problem. Regrettably, I've yet to locate a reliable solution. Most likely an app (or malware) is causing a loss of focus. So, you might investigate to see if one of your startup apps is the culprit. Alternatively, you might do a scan with something like Malwarebytes to see if you've picked up a virus.

I'm sorry I cannot be more help, but I'm just a very technologically challenged former history teacher.

  4. Does anyone take anyone else on these forums seriously? Because, they really shouldn't. We're all ... every one of us ... little yappy dogs.

I speak chiefly of myself, but I sometimes I think the problem lies not with taking others seriously, but with taking ourselves too seriously. Been trying to break that habit for 50 years; regrettably, I'm still struggling with it. ;)

  5. I've actually had the same problem. While I've found a solution that does seem to work it probably isn't what you're expecting. :)

I noticed it seeming to happen when, as I played, I would brush my palm on the corner of the touch pad. What I assumed was happening was windows 8 was attempting to pull up the menu that appears whenever you drag the cursor to the corner of the screen. I'm assuming my palm touching the corner of the pad causes the cursor to move to that corner causing the menu to attempt to pull up causing the desktop to overtake the game.

What I do is take a small dish towel & place it over the space below my keyboard. This prevents me from hitting the touchpad plus provides a cushion for my palms :) Again I'm sure that's not what you were after, but since I've started doing it I never end up at the desktop. Every once in a while I'll forget to put it there & within 15 minutes I'm back at the desktop again. (amazingly always when I'm in a fight)

Had that problem on a laptop once. I disabled the touchpad.

  6. I use Windows 8.1, but have never had this issue. Need more information, such as:

    • By "desktop" do you mean the Start Screen where your apps appear?

    • Does SWTOR quit running altogether, or is it only minimized?

    • Does the PC revert to desktop automatically or after you click on some part of the screen?

  7. Another reason subscription services, most particularly MMOs, have these clauses in their service agreements is because of complete discontinuity amongst the PCs, ISPs, routers (and their attendant issues) security software, and configurations players use. There are simply too many variables and possibilities for data corruption/configuration between server and player to guarantee 100% performance after a patch.

This is not to say that game developers don't make mistakes, as surely they do, but the fact that not all players are suffering the same performance issues might lead us to believe pc configuration, data corruption, registry issues, or more could be a contributing factor. The fact that some reported issues self-correct over time with no intervention from developers provides a clue.

  8. It's akin to claiming that everyone who plays MMO's lives with their mommy, in the latter's basement and goes a whole year without taking a bath.

I think most of us will accede to the fact not all MMO'ers are breast-feeding bottom dwellers, just the ones who britch and cromplain about every little thing. :D

  9. It's just a plan to have everybody buying the gtn terminals and mailboxes on their ships. :p

Have no idea why there's no set perimeter around terminals that causes an auto dismount.

On a side note, I used to play an MMO where there were REALLY big mounts, 2-3 times larger than what we find on SWTOR. It was great sport to park atop an essential NPC or teleport object then go AFK for several hours.

Old and well-traveled as I am, I had absolutely no concept of how largely populated by jerkwads our planet is until I began playing MMOs.

  10. Ashenk is wrong- this game isn't getting shut down anytime soon. They're not gonna turn down hundreds of millions of dollars of cheap revenue, a very large fraction of which comes from a few thousand extreme fanboys blowing their whole paycheck on cartel packs. But actual content updates will continue to become more and more infrequent, and the plague of casual catering will only continue to worsen.

What's this but another worm dangling on the end of a hook?

  11. all this hype about double xp weekend yet it's still one month away.

    biofail fails again.

Oh my, please don't miss an opportunity to judge the glass half empty.

Yep, I agree, one line buried in Patch Notes does constitute 'all this hype.'

    And you're off by a week -- twice !

PS: pretty sure someone else will criticize BW for not hyping it enough

  12. Shadowed hull slides silently

A sharp reel-whine as lines are cast

Flies flick the mirrored surface, beckoning

Skewered crawlers dangle, a promised snack

    An irresistible deception

    My silver-scaled colleagues sally there

    And snap!

The intruding trawler has its catch

  13. Just a thought, one which I'm quite certain will be roundly shouted down, nonetheless ...

Given the expense and time involved in planning, creating, and implementing NPC-initiated class quests, irrespective of the obscenely high cost and time involved in producing cut scenes and accompanying voice acting, I'd propose a series of class stories, triggered by level achievement (or completion of some previous quest) which are received by way of the in-game mail system. Alternately, these 'assignments' can be conveyed to players via their ship-based communicator.

Aside from backend processes, this beckons the least possible development time/expense, therefore it's a win-win for player and developer.

I get that it's not as cool as what's available so far, but it is highly feasible. Moreover, if implemented properly, with an underlying automated mechanic, a very small team can produce class-based quests at reduced intervals.

I'm quite certain an imaginative team of writers can contrive infinite and unique quests, such as an extraplanetary scavenger hunt, lore puzzles, and treasure hunts (obviously, these would be couched more dramatically). Of course, additional quests would include all the ubiquitous killing of N mob(s) and delivering messages/items. Remuneration for completion of these quests would be completed via the mail system.

Please consider the foregoing as having come from an idiot who knows naught about game development.

  14. Likes: The story lines and the diversity of stuff to do. Companions, for the most part,

Dislikes: Endlessly repeating side-quests needed to just level up. How many times do I have to "reset the landing beacons" just to get sufficient XP so I don't get killed by being under-leveled. Boring.

Comment only : not a disagreement

Ironic you should mention "reset the landing beacons." I usually arrive in that area at level-10 and grind on the mobs in that vicinity until I reach level-15, which takes about a day. I end up with a ton of commendations, craft materials (if I'm doing biochem), and I can thereafter literally run through Dromund Kaas, including all the heroics. It's just something I do to kickstart a new alt. A little bit of boring grinding actually speeds me through to level-20, which means I can easily solo the first Nar Shadaa heroic before moving immediately to Balmorra, grind up one level, then run through those quests, and so forth. But I often enjoy grinding, am bored with many of the story lines, so I suck it up and grind a bit then race through quests. On the surface, this may not seem like a quick way to level, but it works for me. :)

  15. What would be fun (for solo artists, like me) would be a squad unlock that would allow me to choose up to three simultaneous companions, available from the current stable. This squad, only selectable within flashpoints and similar instanced activities designed for group play would allow access to a major portion of the game that's unavailable to me now.

Before anyone romps on me about this being an MMO etc etc, I remind that I have physical disabilities. While I have the tenacity and tactical mind to overcome some pretty gruesome stuff, I'm compelled to move through objectives in a slow and methodical way, which is completely unsuitable for 99.99% of typical SWTOR groups.

Therefore, having the ability to call up and control three companions would be HUGE. For cut scene purposes, I'm also willing to accede to the fact that one of these companions in squad is one traditionally bound to my alt.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think this should be a fairly easy implementation; perhaps more so than creating an entirely new companion. Also, it would have the added benefit of providing players a degree of flexibility in grouping, particularly when there is no one else who is willing to do so.

I get that gearing up this many companions just for instances is problematic; therefore, I suggest companions in this squad be auto geared to their level.

With respect to credits or cartel coins, considering the great entrée to gameplay it adds, I'd be willing to pay a hefty fee.

  16. Likes

    • There's a lot of solo content
    • Many different things to do -- more like 'living' in the world than many other MMOs
    • Treek :p the perfect grinding companion

    Dislikes

    • Too many members of the community RP as A-holes
    • Grayed-out quests after you level too high -- often I've only leveled from grinding for materials to make money

  17. I'm quite looking forward to the GS, but I'm doing so with few expectations. I spend little time as possible in fleet because of the minor irritants -- things other players do -- that culminate in disrupting my immersion and concentration when I'm engaging in marketplace speculation and crafting. No gripe here really, it's just me, my old age, and increasing intolerance for immaturity and actions that border on griefing.

Avoiding fleet, I do everything I can on my ship, and I have all the applicable unlocks. But to me the ships are a bit dismal; so, housing with its promise of legacy storage appeals mightily to me. Will I spend heavily on décor, probably not, but I will invest in any and all conveniences that help me avoid the fleet.

Is player housing a game changer for me? Decidedly NOT, it's a cosmetic enhancement at best. Given the choice between additional solo content, playable classes and companions, or new explorable planets, GS comes in way down on my wish list, but I'll be infinitely happy to take whatever I can get.
