  1. I was able to get by with just the comms rewarded by the Class Missions. I didn't have set schedules for when I would upgrade things though. If the missions started getting hard enough that I died to strong or elite mob pulls, then I would go to fleet and upgrade myself and my companion. If I was low on comms, I would focus on Armoring and Hilts/Barrels first, then mods, then enhancements. I never once ran out of comms though. I would usually get around 160-200 comms by the time I needed to upgrade and I was it only cost 50 comms to replace every piece in a full set of gear (100 if I upgraded a companion as well). I never bothered with earpieces, implants, or relics. I just used whatever dropped from trash or was a mission reward from the the 2 or 3 class missions that don't award comms.

I easily made it to Makeb like this and then I stopped upgraded all together and used the GSI bolster. At 55 I did Forged Alliances and got a full set of gear (I think it was 162 or 168) from the gear boxes there. Then I started in on Rishi. At this point my companion was pretty weak, but the Rishi missions rewarded a set of 172 gear pretty quickly without having to upgrade anything, and I was able to use a companion that shared the same primary stat as my character and share some gear with the companion to make things easier. I was comm capped long before I hit 60 and had to get creative at a few points, while still carrying the boxes from FA that each held 99 more comms. Yavin weekly to gear a comp, then Ziost to get a started set for myself, then used comms to fill in gaps and get the right balance of secondary stats.

Ended up still being half way to the cap for basics when I ran out of things to buy.

If anyone does need to upgrade more often than the comms rewards allow, just drop down to planets where you can solo the Heroic 2 and Heroic 4 missions and farm extra credits. You really shouldn't need to do this though unless you are gearing multiple companions as you go.

  2. Ok since it seems like my laptop just can't cut it anymore, what computer should I buy?

    What is your budget?

    Laptop or desktop?

What other games/software do you want to use?

Are you comfortable building your own desktop, or would you prefer one that is already assembled? (Building yourself is off the table though for a laptop.)

If you want a desktop, do you have any peripheral devices already that you don't think you will need to purchase? (Keyboard, mouse, monitor) If you have a keyboard and mouse, are they using PS2 or USB interface to connect? If you have a monitor already, what is it's resolution and refresh rate and which type of interface is it compatible with (VGA, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort)?

The more of these questions you can answer, the better we will be able to assist you.

  3. Fair is everyone having the same opportunities to access the same features. Right now some servers are much better than others ("players are content" - em) despite the fact that they all cost the same $. How is it fair that some people have to throw away their characters or pay exorbitant amounts of money to transfer legacies just to get that same "content"? If there's a name conflict and the criteria gives all concerned the same rules for getting to keep the name, then the event will be fair. I can certainly understand why you don't want to lose your name, it would be sad and you would lose something, but that's got nothing to do with fairness or justice or whatever. You're on one of the upper decks on a slowly sinking ship saying its unfair that you have to give up space in your cabin to someone moving up from a lower deck that's being flooded.

I think my point went over your head by a few hundred feet.

Players don't get to define what is or is not fair is the main point I was making. Though they certainly like to try.

So that leaves a player with 2 choices, argue about it while having a miserable experience in the game, or do something about with the tools that are made available to them and enjoy playing the game.

You can even continue to harp the issue here on the forums, but waiting around for someone else to fix a problem because you don't think it's fair doesn't strike me as a good way to handle this problem if you're miserable on a low population server.

  4. Ask you doctor about this product. It's a technological solution to help people with color blindness, but it's rather expensive and doesn't always work for everyone. Your doctor is far more qualified to help you understand if this is something that is right for you or not.

    http://enchroma.com/

The product is basically a set of glasses that filter a small portion of the color spectrum where two colors overlap. By removing this portion of the spectrum, it allows those with color blindness to more clearly distinguish between the two colors.

  5. Asking for a "fair" solution to this problem is a loaded question.

People on POT5 think it's unfair that Bioware doesn't address the issue. But I wonder if they've consider how unfair it is to the people who have to name change as a result of a merger? How fair is the merger to the ones who paid money to server transfer or spent hours leveling new characters on a different server weeks before a merger is announced? What about the players that prefer low-population servers?

I think it's better to just recognize that there is no "fair" solution to the problem and make use of the existing tools to solve the problem rather than asking Bioware to decide which group has the correct definition of "fair".

  6. get a gt series not ge. the GT have significantly better cooling systems. I bought a ge series and returned it last year for my gt70. I bought a open box model from Amazon and was still able to register it for the full MSI warranty as well.

Thanks for sharing this little bit.

About a day after I first read this thread my better half gave me the go ahead to spend about $1500 on a new laptop for myself. I ended up deciding on the GT70 Dominator.

  7. I literally just found out about the reddit rumor like a week, or two ago. So far it's pretty accurate, but 6/15/15 will determine if it's really true or not. I've mentioned it here on the forums maybe 3 or 4 times at best, and that somehow that makes me "hawking these rumors for sometime now"?? Does that rumor somehow make your vjay hurt, or is it the possibility that it could be true that makes you so upset? Not sure where, or why you are coming up with the 4chan stuff, or for what reason, but I can promise you I've never used the site.

Also, I have nothing against cash shops, in fact this game wouldn't be here if it weren't for the cash flow from the cartel market. My issues are with the continuous tightening of its items in order to ring out every last cent from the players. In my opinion that is bad business and will ultimately turn off more people from buying.

I had heard some buzz about the reddit rumor, but that link earlier in this thread was the first I've read it myself.

My take on it was they have some new Star Wars games in the works at the other game studios they named and just gave Bioware a nod as being who makes and updates this game. The wording is pretty neutral though, so they could have been hinting at a whole new Star Wars game being developed at Bioware as well. As much as I would love to see a SWTOR 2 with a better engine, I'm not very hopeful. Even if the game were announced on 6/15/15, it would likely be years before they are ready to start any alpha testing or show any game play footage. We're likely to see all 3 of the new movies before they could even have the first alpha test ready on an MMO.

  8. ^ This is a good example of well intentioned, but rather poor advice...

Why? Because "2 gigs is enough" is only true some of the time...

The amount of video memory you need depends on several things, the game and detail being drawn are one, the resolution you're running at being another.

If you're running 1080p, even on 3 screens, or 1440/1600p on a single screen, sure, 2 gigs is plenty... But what if you're running 1600p on 3 screens? (which I am)

What if you're running 4k, or (gasp) 4k on 3 screens?

    2 gigs won't be enough...

Very rarely are "absolute" answers correct, there is usually an "it depends" in there.

    Just for reference on this...

Grand Theft Auto V can use 100% of the 4 GB of vram my GTX 770 Classy provides. And that isn't even running graphics at max settings. And I'm only rendering 1080p on a single monitor at 120 hz.

It is rare for any game to need more than 2-3 GB though when rendered at 1080p on a single monitor.

If you have a little wiggle room in the budget, I would consider stepping up to this GS-70 Stealth.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152654

It's a step up on the gpu, more memory, includes an SSD and sacrifices nothing to get there other than a small increase on the price. It's a lot more hardware for only $350 more.

If you want better cooling, I would look into the Asus ROG laptops. They perform as well and anything MSI makes with the same or comparable hardware, and usually have improved cooling. The trade-off on this is the keyboard though. MSI's partnership with Steel Series puts their keyboards miles ahead of the competition.

  10. Could someone give me a rundown on the drama that's happening?

Tommy called Billy a doo-doo head, Billy flipped Mary's skirt on the playground, Mary yelled at Bobby, Bobby made fun of the way Larry talks, Larry tried to kiss Susan, Susan has a crush on Mike, Mike stuck his tongue out at Tommy, and there will be no afternoon recess now. Half the kids cried about it, while the other half told them they had it coming. Larry and Tommy disagreed and blamed each other, all of the kids took sides, except Susan and Mike because they're too busy necking in the corner. The argument continued to escalate until the teacher got frustrated and went to get the principal. While the teach was out of the room everything went to pot like on Lord of the Flies and now everyone is chasing Tommy around the class room trying to smash his head open with rock.

Grab some popcorn and put your cell phone on silent.

  11. Awesome. Thank you for the help. Now about Vette. Is it wise to gear up a companion like that?

I wouldn't spend credits or comms gearing any companions unless you really dislike the appearance of the 192 gear you can earn from the weekly mission on Yavin IV.

That said, there is a weekly mission on Yavin IV that can be done in about 1 hour that will get you a full set of 192 gear for the companion of your choice. There is another weekly mission to kill Revan that will get you a 192 weapon for one copanion, and a daily mission on Rishi that will give you a 192 offhand for your companion.

I would recommend making do with the 172 gear you get from the story missions on Rishi to gear any companion that uses the same primary stat that your character uses.

Once you have your favorite companion geared out in 192 gear, they should have around 48-51k health and do enough damage to nearly solo all of the daily missions on Yavin IV with you standing aside and watching. And each week you can do the weekly mission and fully gear another companion.

Save your credits for the augmentations you will need for your character's gear. Save your comms for 186 or better gear for yourself.

  12. A lot of the whining in this thread seems to be ignoring the fact that people actually went so far as to send harassing messages to family members of a Bioware staff member because they disagreed with him.

It may not be fair to go silent with the entire community because of the actions of a very small segment of the community, but do you really expect them to just roll over and wag a finger while politely saying, "Oh you guys!" when this type of thing happens? How would you feel if someone sent your kids a message on Facebook about how they perceive the work you do?

A very large portion of this community has a very long history of dehumanizing the developers and community managers and treating them poorly, and its all very well documented on these forums. If the devs go silent, I wouldn't blame them in the least because they are often mistreated, and it isn't just a that small fringe group that treats them this way. This time that small fringe group went exceedingly too far, but that does nothing to dismiss the fact that there are a great many more members of this community that treat the devs and CMs in ways that are demeaning and despicable.

  13. I'm not sure that crafting levels the playing field the way people are claiming though. A large guild that crafts and does other things is still going to have a significant advantage over a small guild that crafts and does other things.

The only thing crafting really does to level the playing field is it allows small guilds who craft to compete with large guilds that do not craft. It just keeps small guilds from losing to large guilds who aren't even trying to win planetary conquest. The large guilds that want to win will using crafting as often as the small guilds, but with greater effect because they will have more players to draw upon for farming the mats and crafting the items.

  14. The difference between the 186 and the 192 relics are minimal. Recommend you get a PUG group for TOS HM Malaphar each week and try and get a 198 relic there.

So much this! Even with credits raining from the sky the way they do, the difference between a 192 and 186 relic is not worth the credit cost at all.

  15. NO!!!! This is the WORST AND MOST STUPID suggestion EVER!!! Dont **** The Old Republic with **** like this the same way Disney did with Star Wars. what's next on your stupid suggestion list? Ezra's lightsaber gun?

    Gungan as a playable race.

  16. Creating a new character comes with all of the problems and implications of... creating a new character...

This means that if we have no more character slots open in the server we wish to play in, we'd have to delete one. There's also the fact that most people want to play the story without having to do planet missions they've already played several times before.

Replaying the class story from the beginning isn't free from potentially equally frustrating problems.

Many of the choices you make as you progress through the story make a difference in the game's content throughout the story, such as whether a Sith Inquisitor has a different name and Jaesa can be made dark side or light side. Dialog options can change based upon previous choices.

If all of this is reset, it could have many unintended side-effects. Such as preventing access to content that is dependent upon one of those choices so the game knows how to present the content to you.

A lot of the content beyond level 50 needs to know what your responses to these choices were for mission dialog. There is a very good chance that resetting these values could cause that content to throw errors that would crash the game client. While I'm certain it's not impossible to over-come these issues somehow, the easiest solution I see is to just tell customers to start a new character.

  17. At this point it seems like we won't ever or aren't even near to getting to the point of creating a new class. I think it's in our best interest to start with little things such as this, before taking a big step and add a new class.

I think you misunderstood me. I didn't mean create a new class. I meant create a new character. For example, if I wanted to replay the Sith Warrior story, I would create a new Sith Warrior.

  18. Maybe one drop down menu with all my toys? But still i can use toys from toolbar in one click which is not possible with menus.

And server performance oh my... :( They can add client-side stored toolbars like in WoW.

Or maybe new auto-quickbars for all toys in inventory... But this is too complicated for bioware. :(

I'm sure something could be worked out. I would pursue both suggestions. There seems to be a few others who want more toolbars from what I've seen on other recent threads. I'm just postulating about how it might impact performance and could be wrong. The way UI objects impact performance can be odd at times. And this game's UI is more odd than most. There are a few threads with a lot of activity over the last year that show pretty strong evidence that there can be noticeable differences in the game's framerate and over-all performance based upon the UI being displayed or hidden.

But regardless of whether or not they ever do anything to add more toolbars, the way we interface with recovery items and other "toy" items could use some improvement. At the very least something similar to how mounts and pets are organized would help with inventory management problems. I usually only have 2-3 of these items on me at any given time, because I don't want to loose the inventory slots they would fill. I would use a larger variety of these items if I could do so without sacrificing inventory slots.

There is definitely no harm in supporting both suggestions though! :)

  19. Ah, so from what I get is its not allowed because the American Goverment would like access tot he information should it need it, however in the EU this is against our data protection act? Aren't all of our accounts stored on US servers anyways? It would hardly be convenient for BW to keep all EU players accounts stored out of reach so I presume that all the account info with whatever details BW has of you (payment details, address etc) is currently stored in the US anyways.

Also if what you have said is the case (that its EU laws preventing the US from having EU player data) wouldn't transfers out of the US still be possible as EU would not be giving out any data but instead is taking it in?

From a business view, if the company isn't willing to negotiate the hurdles necessary to allow data to flow from the EU to the US, I would imagine it makes more sense to disallow the flow of data from the US to the EU than to allow it. Imagine the rage many customers would experience if they transferred to an EU server and then later discovered they can never transfer back.

As an American and an IT professional though, I have to tip my hat to the EU for standing up to the US government on these issues and siding on protecting the data and rights of the individual citizens. I wish more voters in the US would consider things like this during election seasons. The way our government uses personal data is borderline to criminal.
