Assault or Tactics?

Level 53 and inching close to 55, I've been switching between the specs each level, so i have experience with all 3 specs, I'm a veteran MMO player so picking up specs is easy for me, however, I'm currently stumped as to which spec i want to prioritize more.

When it comes to DPS'ing, are their huge differences between the two specs in terms of damage output, or are they both on a moderately equal level, with the DPS differences being minor? I've tried to answer this question myself with google, but everything i find seems out of date, being Dulfy (Using an out of date calculator, which leads me to believe the rotation and effectiveness of each spec could be wrong) and Noxxic, which is known for very rarely being correct in anything it writes.

So if i could get some info from the more up-to-date troopers, that would be grand and appreciated.

For the specs, they both have their benefits. However, if your for Single Target DPS, Burst damage or outright mobility, Assault is definately the spec to go with.

Tactics's strength comes from its AoE damage and its survivability - some fights its actually better to tank them in Tactics than in Shield Specialist

I've got a pretty decent guide for it in my signature right now for both specs, just know they are both going to change drastically in patch 3.0 - which comes out on December 2.

When that happens, I'll be writing the new guides for Dulfy, and you'll find them on her website.

For reference:

Tactics will average 3.4-3.6k dps in a mix of 180 and 186 gear, with ~30% of it being AoE damage, while Assault is going to be above 4k dps average in the same gear, only it has no room for AoE damage in its rotation.

I'll give more info on both specs on Friday (or Saturday for those who live in Australia/New Zealand) when the devs do their live stream and Im actually allowed to talk about the new versions of them (Stupid NDA blocking me helping people understand how the specs will play)

Brilliant and speedy reply, thanks for that, I guess there's not much point in fussing over the specs for now then given that the changes are coming in less than a month, I guess for now I'll stick with tactics for now then for knocking out quests and dailies to speed things up a bit so i can get as much done as possible.

I'll bookmark your current guide and I'll be keeping my eye out for your guide you upload onto Dulfy. Cheers!

Edit: Thanks for mentioning the livestream as well, was unaware of this and will be tuning into watch it.

As the NDA has been lifted on most of VGs/PTs skills, I can now talk about things!

Come 3.0, Tactics will be the burst spec, with Plasmatech (new assault specialist) being the sustained spec. Both options will have a lot of AoE capabilities, where Tactics will get a lot of its AoE from Death From Above + Sticky Grenade, while Plasmatech gets it mainly from Pulse Cannon.

The choice will be "I want mobility + Burst" or "I want Sustained damage capabilities"

Tactics will play similarly to Assault right now, but with a 100% proc rate (which by the way, the stacking RNG was confirmed to be real by the devs :p) on the Ionic Accelerator Proc, making resource management that way easier. You will end up using slightly more resources overall. The addition of Sticky Grenade and Explosive Surge to the Ionic Accelerator proc have greatly benefited the AoE rotation as well. It will also be giving all the burns of old assault specialist to Plasmatech, while retaining Tactics's defensive capabilities and the Gut bleed.

Plasmatech will play very similarly to Tactics right now, but with the free attack no longer being a Stockstrike - instead it will be on either Ion Pulse or Explosive Surge. It will also steal all the burns off Assault Specialist, but only have Adrenaline Fueled from Assault for its defensive buffs in the tree.

Depending on which playstyle you'll want to use come 3.0 (Sustained, through DoTs, or Burst + Mobility), I'd learn either Tactics or Assault right now. Go with Tactics if you want the Sustained + DoTs, and Assault if you want to learn the Burst + Mobility, as they both will be really good with AoE capabilities.

Cheers for the input again dude, i greatly appreciate you coming back here to give me the information, the only thing i'm unsure about is which class is the burst spec and which is the Sustained/Dot based spec, as you've given conflicting information in your post, at the start of your post you said tactics is the burst spec, with plasmatech being the sustained spec, however you then say tactics is sustained, and plasmatech is burst.

Or maybe I'm just being very stupid and reading things wrong.

The last line was saying which spec you should play now depending on what you want in 3.0

That nice burst of AP will be rendered useless against tank + healer in pvp I assume.
