Is SWTOR Part of New "Legends"? Or New Canon?

Hey Trooper -

Thanks!

I saw your comment about the Shae and Sacking of Coruscant stuff. I looked it up on wookiepedia though and cannot find the reference you mention. Do you have more details?

And forgive me, there's like 20 pages of stuff in that thread. Would you mind bulleting out your facts? I'm researching this stuff pretty heavily, and the 2 things I found from you seemed relevant to my interests. I want to make sure I'm not missing some.

Again, and please do let me know what episode of TCW Vizla mentions Shae. I cannot find it.

Eric

I assume this is what is being referred to:

This lightsaber was stolen from your Jedi Temple by my ancestors during the fall of the Old Republic.

--Pre Vizsla, The Mandalore Plot.

Yeah, Vizla is threatening Kenobi with a Darksaber, That scene. Its been a while sice I watched TCW, so youll have to forgive me.

Also, some will dispute "Fall of the Old Republic", but I think it fits. The Old Republic was no longer THE Galactic Power. It had to contend with the Sith and their Empire.

I agree, nor do we know how this story will end, it could end with the Republic fractured and broken.

Pre Vizla was my main argument. On another note however, (not touching on the SW universe itself) I saw Lucasarts and Disney say something like "Anything going forward is canon". SWTOR is going to have PLENTY of new story updates, so I hope this means Lucasarts & Disney will count it as in the "Going Forward" category.

You quoted an editorial on the whole thing. Very little of that is factual or from anyone senior at Lucasfilm or Bioware.
I didnt say it was from Lucasarts,it was a term that came up a lot in the runup to this.(EU story treatment thing)

Did you guys seriously think that Disney would not do everything in its power to milk the new licence it paid 4,5 billion for the contract for? ,only thing that may set a damper is any options or caveats Lucas wrote into the contract, wich cannot have been that much.

Having worked on Wall street ,I am instantly suspicious of big conglomerates like Disney when they say they care about a story licence as opposed to making profit of it,cause make no mistake..when it all comes down to it..Disney want to make money from Star Wars in a BIG way, first by rushing the first movie to Christmas release 2015.

No star wars movie have been rushed before like that, all previous installments were seeking to break new ground, not only in SW but in how movies were made, wich even the sometimes reviled prequels did this,

'and those btw did take an insane amount of time to develop and make with no rush, this new one is seemingly thrown together, written, shot and released in a year or so...point is it doesnt bode well for the future of the licence not being money first story second

Probably someone already brought this up, but since I haven't seen on this topic, here it goes.

A Lucasfilm representative confirmed to GameSpot that future game releases will also be canonical. This includes DICE's Battlefront and Visceral's new Star Wars game being written by former Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig and Uncharted actor Todd Stashwick. Both games are being published by Electronic Arts, which signed a multiyear deal to produce Star Wars video games in 2013.

The recent delay of the latest expansion for another EA title, Star Wars: The Old Republic, is unrelated to today's announcement. The Lucasfilm rep told GameSpot, "[A]s far as The Old Republic MMO is concerned, nothing is going to change. [TOR] has always been a part of the Expanded Universe, and that's not going to change."

Now, what I ask myself is: what Expanded Universe means here? As far as I understand, everything that is not part of the movies is still considered part of the EU, the difference now being that they are as canon as those movies. For example, the upcoming novels, they are part of the EU, right? What I'm trying to say is that, if TOR is considered as part of the EU from now on, it's canon, since all new EU is canon.

That's my interpretation, but I'm not sure if that's really what was said, I wanted the opinion of more people, see if more follow my toughts or at least understands what I'm trying to say.

Yeah I kind of don't really use that quote at all for two reasons:

1) We don't know who the rep is.

2) What EU? As of April 25th there isn't an EU. There's Legends (which is the EU) and Canon.

They aren't really using the same verbiage we've been seeing from LFL as of the announcement. So I think it may be baloney. Or an intern or something.

I'll also say:

I think the 2 new FP's we got are a precursor to the next expansion. Not Galactic Strongholds, but the one after that Bruce talked about a bit. Its supposedly a kind of RotHC level expansion in terms of story.

Which makes me scratch my head. I'll be curious to see how both digital expansions credits roll. If they still have that story group credit, even after the April announcement, that will be interesting.

It depends whether the term "EU" is still being used in the future, or whether its now just canon and non-canon.

It could be referring to the EU as in Legends, or the EU as in future non-movie stories.

All LFL personnel rarely use the term EU after April 25th. Its part of their branding going forward. They refer to it as Legends now.

So as I say, I wouldn't pay that article much credence. That quote from them doesn't mirror any of the other facts anywhere else.

My best hunch right now is that SWTOR is not being forgotten, but is also not firmly set in stone yet. My hunch is that the powers that be are still figuring out how to really deal with it.

My hunch is that they are probably nervous about calling all of SWTOR canon, considering there's some things that they probably view as not a good introductory piece to the universe. Maybe things like how the Empire looks and acts so similar to the modern day SW Empire. I personally find it pretty cool that maybe Palpatine knew about all of that from scrolls or whatever, and was like "My Empire will bear a great resemblance to the Sith Empire of old." But maybe that doesn't quite add up with their own logic and history for various reasons.

And then simultaneously maybe they do want to be involved with story content going forward on SWTOR.

I figure its probably hard for them to reconcile 1.0-2.0 of the game which the story group wasn't so involved in, while still wanting to be a part of it going forward.

Honestly, I expect more than from RotHC. As the previous had a more tie-in feeling, I hope the next major expansion will begin a new chapter on the War, with a major character returning or being introduced, perhaps a new class?

Given that it was a marking ploy to get people into a game that feels like Star Wars, I doubt they will take issue with that of all things. Most likely its one its merits as attracting new fans into the universe.

Not to abstract or distant from the classic Star Wars image prevalent across continuity.

Yeah, gotta give to them, they've got some pretty big talent working on these games.

I have been incredibly psyched since I heard Amy Hennig was coming onboard for SW games, only played about 20 minutes of the Uncharted series ever (the first came with my PS3) but she was lead writer for most of the Legacy of Kain series, which is flat-out awesome when it comes to characters and writing (pretty sure she's the direct author behind my sig quote).

So you are saying that they are saying its still canon, or that it was never considered canon by them in the first place and they are keeping it that way......

That article has been linked now like 4 times in this thread. The article contradicts itself INSIDE its own article. Its like reading something from the Matrix Architect. It makes my brain hurt. It sounds like the quotes are from an intern or something. For example:

"Lucasfilm confirms all future Star Wars content to be canon, including the games"

""all aspects of Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected.""

""[A]s far as The Old Republic MMO is concerned, nothing is going to change. [TOR] has always been a part of the Expanded Universe, and that's not going to change.""

WHAT DOES THAT ACTUALLY MEAN??!?! IS SWTOR NOT MAKING NEW STORIES GOING FORWARD? !?!?!? IS IT CANON GOING FORWARD?!?!?!?!? YOU SAY "NOTHING IS CHANGING." WHAT?!?!?!? USE YOUR WORDS, JOURNALIST!!!!

what i got from that was as it was always part of the EU then it is part of the same group of EU that has been scrapped, in other words it is non cannon now.

i mean this game makes references to exar kun naga shadow and many other ppl found in the books and comics that are now non cannon (call it legands all u want disney we aint buyin it)

My guess would be that, as the Films always been Canon, that the canon lore at C - level pre dating EP 1 just will have minor tweak were as all things after EP 6 is in most danger of being altered ... Edited by t-darko

No, I think everything EU after RotJ IS gone. Same with most things before Ep. 1, but im optimistic SWTOR is part of the New canon.

Pretty sure, as others have said, #3 quote is questionable.

One of the pillars of my optimism is the first two, hoping Lucasarts means TOR is part of the "Going Forward" category (Yes I know I've said that a million times :) ).

The point is that the new ruling was supposed to not have a gray area, and it kind of does. Unless literally SWTOR content prior to 4/25 is not canon, and after that it is.

A lot of people keep throwing around the "post-ROTJ is only affected" thing, and thats not true. 100% all EU material is now Legends. Whether its before or after ROTJ or anything.

The only thing that makes SWTOR any different, and raises any question are the facts so far we've stated. Specifically the story group's involvement/credit which is found, as well as the fact that it has ongoing story content, and from LFL, "All games, books, etc" will be canon (not c-canon, z-canon, or anything else) and be overseen for continuity issues and approved by the same story group who is credited in GSF (our last digital expansion) from SWTOR.

Now, the only reason that SWTOR would be forfeit is the fine line they do not say, which is "All NEW games, etc," and SWTOR only has new story content every 8-10 weeks. It is not a newly produced game post April 25th.

I am hopeful though. I really hope it does stay canon.

Someone a page back mentioned SWTOR cannot be canon due to the fact it references old Sith lords and events in prior books and games. They have already stated through a senior person this does not matter. I've said it before, but Darth Bane exists as canon, and can be in future stories, even though the Darth Bane books have been clearly stated as Legends. Those Darth Bane books also take place prior to ROTJ and have been called Legends. We have that confirmed. So the pre-ROTJ, post-ROTJ is not an issue at all.

I'm still keeping my eyes peeled for tweets from the heads of licensing or bioware. Those, I feel, are where the real horses mouth is. Pretty much everything else I've read is either contradictory, or just editorial conjecture from like Wired or whatever.
