Quarterly Producer Letter for Q2 2024 ×

Its not even 3 cents worth of time people.

$15 per month/ 30 days = $0.50 per day

$0.50 / 24 hours = $0.021 per hour

$0.021 x 1.25 hours of downtime today due to maintenance = $0.026

So while you may be frustrated about downtimes, just remember that it is only a few cents that you are losing.

My RL is so busy that I only get about 5 hours of free time per week so it's about 20 hours per month for me. If one hour of maintenance smacks onto my online hours, it takes away 5% of my monthly playtime.

Bioware doesn't cater to individuals window of play. Good luck finding a company that does this.

Did you just give an estimation on how much my time cost ? And I though it was invaluable !

Bioware doesn't need to. *I'm* the one that makes the determination whether a downtime is too much or not, based on how much it matters to *my* monthly playtime.

Whether Bioware cares or not doesn't matter a monkey's whistle.

The formula is making an assumption that it's possible for someone to hop on the game at any time during those 24 hours but choses not to.

For me, it's more like between 8pm to 12am between Tuesday to Friday (Not at all on Monday) and at most 16 Hours (24 hours - 8 for sleeping) on Saturday and Sunday. So that make 48 hours at most a week if I drop everything to play the game.

That makes 192 hours a month and around USD0.08 an hour.

I demand you change the thread heading!

There is a lot of MMOs that do this, that's for sure.

Also, this proves that the downtime is worth more than most peoples' opinions too!

As an Aussie i say deal with it.... because thats the response we get from a lot of people in the USA when our servers go down at 5pm - 11pm.. And in a 8 day run we lost 5 nights due to patching, and here you people are complaining over an hour.

I'm indifferent to the size of the amount, it could have been 0.0000001 cent and I'd still think of it is principally wrong. I havent read the fineprint but I would assume that they've added 40 or so disclaimers regarding downtime. That doesnt make it right. Just compare it to a home phone service, a service that in many cases have a fixed cost similar to the $15/month BW charges us. Would you be ok with the phone being down sometimes three times per week and atleast two hours every Tuesday? I don't see how it's any different from this just because people deem the need for a phone to be more important than a video game. Same thing could be said about a mistake made by an MD contra a mistake made by a person over at Wal-Mart. The consequences may differ but they're both mistakes.

That said, it's not the end of the world but I cannot understand how people, time and time again, defend these mistakes as if we were to be thankful. It's a paid service and that's the end of that.

I dont personally care, just playing devils advocate here...

If thats the only time that certain people can play then it cost them 50 cents not a couple cents. if that happend a few times a week then it costs them a couple bucks.

That's certainly one way to look at it, but it's like solving a storage-to-volume problem by assuming you are dealing with spherical chickens in zero-g (Thanks, Big Bang Theory!). Not all hours are equal.

So: Here's another way of looking at it. I have a day job. That means I work during the day, and I have to get a certain amount of sleep, and do housework and so on. So, I play in the evenings. Say, 6-10pm. Only not on Tuesdays, because I'm in Australia and the servers are down. But what the hell, let's be uber-generous and say I spend 8 hours on both days of the weekend. I don't, but I could.

So that's (fires up maths brain) a maximum of 32 hours a week when it's possible for me to play. If I don't, you know, socialise, or have a life or a family or relationships. SWTOR is still cracking value for money: about 50c a playable hour in my case, give or take. Bargain! Compared with going to the movies, it's practically free.

What I actually lose when there's night after night of downtime is the chance to:

-level my alts

-participate in FPs

-check the GTN

-play with my guildies.

-do dailies with my level 50 character.

-ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME I ENJOY SO MUCH

And that's what causes the frustration. Acting like people are bent out of shape about the money (some may be; many are not) is missing the point in a rather major way. It's not like there's anything we can do about it, sure. But acting like we are venting frustration because of a small financial loss is pretty dismissive and not terribly insightful.

It could be worse. There could be no maintenance at all, no down time, just a broken game that never improves.

As opposed to maintenance, downtime and a broken game that never improves? Which is what we have now?
