They could really only be put on space stations, capital ships or placed immobile on a planet unable to move. However the Mass Driver Cannons, are more versatile able to have several rounds ranging from chemical to plasma rounds and could be placed on walkers such as the AT-TE and AT-AP. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/All_Terrain_Attack_Pod http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/AT-TE Now their range/power might not be too big compared to a turbolaser, but the other qualities of a mass driver cannon make up for it. Mass Drivers can punch through shields, well can go through ray shields not particle shields. But ya I think mostly thats why cruisers have turbolasers, because they don't require ammo just an energy source and they have a longer range. The only flaw of the Mass Drivers is the need for ammo, where Turbolasers just need a good power source. If I had to choose, I would say the Mass Drivers. They go right through shields and seem to have more punch in ship to ship combat. For planetary assaults, Turbolasers are great, but I'll go with Mass Drivers. Well obviously the projectile would have to be smaller and proppeled with less force. But yeah the slugthrower is pretty close to a handheld driver.
