Space Combat Needs a Serious Difficulty Boost

Even with just the torpedoes (to take down some of the more durable objectives) and the one that lets you switch between offense and defense, the final missions are definitely pretty easy/doable. Surviving them is definitely easy; when you don't have objectives near you, just switch to the super shield generator and your shields will be back to full in less than 20 seconds. "Stance dancing" works extremely well.

I'm more iffed by the fact that the higher level missions seem to be more or less repeats of lower level ones :(

This person gets it.

power converter+do a barrel roll= all of the missions are a joke. especially once you get all of the high level equipment for your ship.

No doubt, the +50% shield regen lets me walk away with minutes to spare.

On the lower lvl ones on my alts they simply don't hit hard enough so I can walk away from those too. Again, barring mission critical objectives or asteroids.

I may be in the minority here, but I enjoy the space combat system. But it is rediculously far too easy. Maybe add hard and nightmare modes of the missions? IDK, but when you can literally go afk with 2 minutes left atleast something is wrong (barring a mission critical objective at the end or asteroid fields)

And yes, multiplayer and many other additions to it would be great, but 1st I think the easiest would be to up the difficulty to where it's atleast a little challenging.

Anyone else agree?

lol 2 min afk yea right tell another 1 while your there im rofl at you let me guess your lvl 16 and your just starting the easy missions!

actually im telling the truth, and have a 50, a 23, and a 19.

Don't be snarky with me if you're bad at something, l2p, it's a better route to take.

They could always add a difficulty slider or options for the space missions. You want more challenge set it higher. Find it too hard set it down. Honestly i find the space missions easy but that's because of all the endless hours of playing Freelancer and them some of the mods that people have made.

As you wish lol. will be up tomorrow.

I must admit I'd like to see a video of someone doing (I think it's) Sullust Interception (the mid-40's one that isn't the minefield anyway) with grade 3 or lower upgrades.

Be an interesting watch.

I agree, as in my OP though I suggest difficulty levels just as the flashpoints and operations, hard and nightmare modes.

In the interest of improving the current space combat game, it would be nice to have:

1. a high score to beat.

2. perhap increase the score/medals/rewards if you do a mission with lower upgrades on your ship (i.e. if you do a L50 mission with Grade 1 or no upgrades at all, rewards could be much higher than doing it with full purples, as the difficulty would be MUCH higher).

Both those things would be nice and couldn't be that hard to impliment within the current system.

I believe there are asteroids in that one so I wouldn't go afk, either way i'll re-purchase the low level upgrades and run it tomorrow.

The problem (as I see it) with difficulty is it leaps up and down, I can remember lvl 12 or what ever first time doing the one you attack the space station, I got ripped to shreds.

Turns out its stupidly easy, but as you go up past lvl 40 they become impossible hard for the average player, few people in my guild do space missions now.

I can do The Impossible Sector, Last mission you get at 50 and worth daily commendation, in my sleep but the two you get just before it are still extremely difficult, one pass can drop a full shield, so no Id be against an increase in difficulty but I would like to see it evened out a little.

I very much agree.

I think the only purps I have are a mission reward and maybe one more. +the lvl 2 ship armor that I haven't felt the need to replace even after it got corrected/nerfed.

Yeah, it's an asteroid field one. It's the only one I've had trouble with when I was hitting it with supposedly the "right" gear level.

Be nice to see what I did wrong. :)

I was SOOOO MASSIVLY disapointed with the final space mission (ascendency barrier). It is roll your face on the keyboard easy.

I think the last time I played it I was trying to multi-task and ran into an asteroid like 7 times - didn't even come close to dieng.

use the mouse to target what you want to shoot

keep your ship constantly moving with w,a,s,d

barrel roll every 3-4 seconds

when the map gives you a rest switch to shield regen mode

YAWN YAWN YAWN

PLZ give EPIC CHALLENGE space mission, I want this so bad

Yea and it's an escort too if I remember correctly. I remember having some difficulty with that, but I must say that almost every space mission with alot of explosions was because I was getting SERIOUS fps drops and slowdown, after a patch a few weeks ago, forget which one, 0 slowdown and everything was cake.

Remember hating when ppl would orbital strike cause of that fps drop lol, again not anymore haha.

When you get to the 46+ missions it gets a LOT harder.

As in you can barely manage it purple mods. Up to 44 missions its pretty simple as long as you have at least modestly upgraded your ship.

Once the opposing ships start having shields the difficulty climbs rapidly. It takes a good burst blasters or 2 missiles to kill one ship.

I still haven't been able to finish several missions even with high level upgrades.

---

Before that its not very hard. Even with level 2 mods you can do almost all the missions before 46.

There are a few important things that make space combat much easier, besides leveling and better gear:

  • Always use the offensive/defensive toggle, 1 for offensive, 2 for defensive. If you haven't bought this ship upgrade yet, BUY IT! It's available at level 25 from the fleet comm. vendor. While defensive, roll back and forth across the screen and do not fire lasers, you'll do minimal damage and they prevent shield regen, missiles are fine though.

  • Learn the map. Learn to recognize when you'll need to avoid an asteroid, where and when the most dangerous enemies will be, when it's best to use cooldown abilities, and when objectives are easiest to complete.

  • Prioritize, primary objective targets first, survival second, then bonus objectives, and last, earning extra xp.

Once you get used to doing the above all maps are doable even somewhat undergeared.

I found some "temporarily difficult" - until I just get the appropriate gear for my level.

It's effectively not an endgame mission, but the starbase assault mission - it seems way too easy, really. You can blow up the primary mission objectives so fast that you have 2 minutes where you have no objective (not even the bonus one)!

I hav enoticed that some missions seem to get new bonus objectives when you reach a higher level. That could be an interesting way to add difficulty, IMO - give us bonus objectives that are difficult to pull off. Something that requires a lot of timing, for example, with a short window of opportunity. (I think the minefield one has that - at least I seem to miss one of the heavy fighters very often).

Of course, i owuld prefer an X-Wing/Tie-Fighter type space combat system about the existing one. But I can accept getting additional missions for now. It's a neat diversion. (Kinda opposite how it was in STO for me. While space combat there is awesome, ground combat was never my thing. I still dislike it even after a major revamp. TOR may have a weak space combat system - but at least it's a neat diversion and something one can do for quick skill points occassionally.)

<snip>(I think the minefield one has that - at least I seem to miss one of the heavy fighters very often).

<snip>

That last heavy fighter you can get at the end, when you are to destroy that minelayer ship or whatever it's called. It'll be flying around there somewhere. It's easy to find cause it's be the one that's not completely easy to kill, and when you put some shots in it it'll be smoking, making it very easy to pick out.

I just want difficulty modes is all. It would be very easy to implement imo cause it would basically be just upping the firepower and shields of the enemy fighters and objectives. The rewards could just be the same, just upped, more credits, legacy exp, and fleet comms.

Again, I enjoy them, but it's just so easy.

No. I think it's fine the way it is. some of us are not twitchy.
