Tanking The Old Republic - Ops

There is an increased reward as you get 6 pieces of loot in 16 man rather than the 2 you get in 8 man. You would expect it to double to 4 but the 6 makes for the added value to 16 man.

 

More importantly the 16man is harder so you get the satisfaction of clearing it :D

I thought we were getting 3 pieces of Rakata from some bosses but I'm just as likely wrong. Weighting the risk/reward I'm not sure if that makes up for it. It would be a different story if there was a new tier of gear available in 16mans.

 

I guess we'll see what happens with the guild.

Ran our first 16-man last night, all my other experience has been 8-man up to now. We just went through on normal, mostly to get everyone together and see what (if any) mechanics changed for the fights.

 

I've updated all my strats to include the basic 16-man changes. Many of them (on normal) weren't any different, a few had only minor changes.

Failed on our 2 hour run through EV last night so we missed our titles.

 

I would recommend staying out of EV for this week, and post on the threads you see talking about the bugs so hopefully they'll get some attention. I've got a writeup here:

Our main jug tank runs a twitch.tv stream for nightmare modes on Tuesday nights. It can be seen at http://www.twitch.tv/zmarg

 

This may seem off topic a bit, but I'm trying to start my own stream of my guild through my viewpoint (powertech tank) and I'm wondering if you could find out how he sets up his stream!!!! Ive been trying to figure it out and im stymied.

First three bosses in Explosive Conflict are done - these of course are subject to change and I tweak the strategies each time they make changes to the bosses. But for now they're solid - for any of you that want to prepare early for the changes.

This is a very nice initiative! I was planning on doing the same for my Operative Medic and my Powertech tank. However, due to recent burst in workrelated activities, I'm not able to write fullpfledged guides on it yet.

 

I have read some of your guides (mostly regarding Flashpoints), and they are indeed very useful. Learned some new tricks, as well as acknowledging that I'm doing it right :-D

 

That is why I want to support you any way you can. As I said, I can't write full guides, but if you want a Powertech point of view, you can send me a private message via this forum with specific situations and I will research and write it down for you. You can then write it up on your blog, if you want or just slightly reference it, that is up to you!

Hello Spoe, and thanks for your generous offer. I will keep you in mind if I get to a point where I need to compare or contrast information from your classes. I have some tanking guides in the "theory" stage that will likely need input from all three types of classes so that might work out well.

In particular the boosting of aoe threat in 1.3 ^^ I did not know that, should make life a bit easier with trash - because as a tank they're without a doubt the biggest pain in the behind :p

Thanks alifaraaz, I'll look at mmo-mechanics, I dont' think I've checked out the community there.

 

Agreed with the threat changes. He was just hinting at what was going to be done, I'm anxious to see real notes saying exactly what they're planning to do. Of course I'm sure everyone is anxious to see real notes and get a real timeline on when stuff is getting implemented.

Do you have any tips for Nightmare Jarg+Sorno? We have no problem with Nightmare Bonethrasher, Hard Jarg+Sorno, and Story Explosive Conflict. Can't get through Nightmare Jarg+Sorno though, people (usually one of the tanks) just explode at random periods, not sure why.

I'm going to guess you're running 16man and it happens when Jarg and Sorno start saying "Your Turn" - "My Turn?" - "Your Turn".

 

Sorno marks someone for Jarg and Jarg rail shots them into next week. This isn't as punishing on 8man, but I've heard 16man nightmare it has 1 shot some people. We never had to be that careful (8 man) since it was punishing, but could be recovered from. On 16man you might need to watch for the marked player and get a bubble or something on them ebfore they get splatted.

 

This is all second hand knowledge, and if you aren't running 16 man look for the same mechanic but just keep everyone topped off at that point. Thats the only thing I can think of that will randomly explode a tank.

No, it's 8-man. And I have no idea if it's the railshot, as with the sound messed up I don't get to hear any of the audio cues in that fight since 1.2. :(

 

The tank on Jarg will get a debuff that causes him to take extra damage from fire. Once that debuff is on the Jarg tank, he should make sure to stay out of the flame whirls that Jarg does.

 

If the Jarg tank gets the Burning debuff while also afflicted with the extra fire damage debuff, then that adds up to a lot of damage too I think. So you need to make sure to be cleansing Burning off of the Jarg tank especially.

 

The Sorno tank needs to interrupt the cast that builds up stacks (Unload I think it's called?), as that will cause the Sorno tank to take way more damage if that isn't controlled.

 

Even if you play properly, the tank damage on this fight is pretty heavy. It's more of a healer test than anything else, but at least make sure your tanks are avoiding damage when possible.

Then like Kihra said I'll look for the fire debuffs and make sure your tank is interrupting Unload on Sorno. Those are the only other two high damage things going on.

 

Is it the tank on Jarg or Sorno that is usually dying?
