Next it'll be selling in game items for straight up cash which is the utter down fall of every MMO that has done such. This is a complaint and I don't care who thinks I shouldn't qq. You know they sell those outside of security vendors, right? You're telling me you're mad because the super unique skin that anyone else can get requires a security key? I know right, how dare they give you special perks for protecting your account from hackers and scammers, they should reserve that **** for people who per-ordered and buy overpriced PC gadgets. San-Holo Posted January 22, 2012 Share Posted January 22, 2012 (edited) You can get a FREE one for just about every smart phone on the market, "hacked" accounts cost a ton of money to companies so they want to give you an intensive to keep your account safe, according to several companies restoration of a hacked account costs them over 3 months of sub fee's(in a best case scenario), especially when you get your email "hacked" too.. It takes a phone rep, a GM rep, an "account specialist", and in many cases a fully pledged DBA to restore an account, that's several hours of man power which could have been spent doing actual constructive things like helping a player who actually needs and deserves it and maintaining the game and the servers... Honestly if i was running a company i would not ask you, but i would actually force you to get 2 factor authentication on your account. No company should pay because people use the same password(and very simple one) and email for every thing, and then they get "hacked"... I did a consulting gig a year ago for a gaming company, during it we've dumped a DB of a gaming "services"(PL, gold, accounts etc) site, we've compared that DB to the actual user DB of the game and we had 87% match ratio for emails and password from the site to the game... in raw numbers it was a little over 17K - so that's over 750,000 dollars in potential damages. That is the complaint. I wouldn't give a damn if there were a couple rare ones on it and a couple not so rare on regular vendors in game. So instead of a $5 authenticator (which origin wont even sell me BTW) i gotta buy a $600+ phone, amazing logic. until origin decides they actually want to sell their authenticators i call BS on the whole 'it costs them super amounts of money if your account gets hacked' line. And yes, while i havent checked on Xalek, i do know for certain that Ashara is only available via the authenticator vendor. This wouldn't be an issue at all if they had standard customizations like every other companion for every otherclass! Every provider is giving out android phones for free these days, if you want to buy off contract there are android phones under 250US these days too. The security key costs 13 euro's or 4 lousy dollars, 4 dollars you cant buy a happy meal for that these days... In a game that costs a monthly sub to keep playing, it's outright idiotic to make some stuff only available to people who pay extra. It starts with pre-order bonuses, followed by this new abomination called Digital Deluxe Edition, closely followed by Collector's Editions which could do very well with just the physical stuff. Now the next little big thing is the security key. After that, over time there will be the premium shop which will sell stuff like mounts, pets, and in ToR most likely customizations which will look much better than 99% of the stuff you can get ingame. I hate it. It has absolutely no place in a game with a monthly sub. It's just a capitalistic tool to create revenue out of nothing. The much higher security of your account should be perk enough. I get it though, it's the same as how you make a kid take it's bitter medicine, just put it onto a lot of sugar.
