  1. Sadly most MMO developers add some sort of system like this. They know they can't provide PvE content as fast as players can chew threw it, so even on PvE servers they leave the option to PvP when you run out of content. So you end up two types of PvP players on a PvE servers. 1) PvE players that have run out of content or just become bored with the content. So they try their hand at PvP for something to do. These players are usually decent people and respectful of others. They are the type of players that won't attack someone 10+ levels lower than them and will not engage someone who is half dead and in the middle of fighting a MOB. 2) Griefers that can't hack it on a PvP server. The griefers love the flagging system and they are the first ones to defend the current way things work. They are borderline sociopaths that thrive on un-fair fights. They don't want a fair fight, they want a hand full of PvE mobs helping, they want to surprise you when you least expect it. Both types of players exist in every game out there but still developers seem to put little or no thought into the impact of griefers. I used to buff people, but I don't anymore. I used to heal random people, but I don't anymore. I've been forced to check each group member when I join a group to ensure they are not set for PvP, if they are I leave the group. I've turned on name plates so I can identify opposing faction members, if I see them I disengage from combat and go do something else to avoid them. And yet still I sometimes get flagged for PvP, which almost always ends the same way. A group of 2 or more opposing faction players slaughtering me while I'm in combat with mobs doing quests. Even after they get their jollies beating up someone who CANNOT win the fight, I have to spend time out of my day waiting to get un-flagged. Because not even death makes it go away. I am a PvE player, I play on a PvE server. I do not want to PvP, ever. I have been killed by opposing players and yet I have NEVER entered a PvP area or flagged myself for PvP in the game. The current system is not totally consensual as advertised. Although their system was very buggy at the start, the Rift system seemed to take care of this. Why can't I just get an option I can toggle for "Never flag me for PvP" and just don't let me heal/damage anyone that is?
  2. Software like this does not do what you think it does. If your system needs more memory, buy some. For a desktop PC take whatever Microsoft says you need and multiple that by 4, for a gaming rig multiply by 8. Windows XP: 1g min, 2g+ gaming. Windows Vista/7: 4g min, 8g gaming. Unlike things such as Video Cards and the new favorite SD Drives RAM is super cheap.
  3. I've worked on two solutions. 1) I play in Windowed Mode, so when I get near him I just click outside of the game so I can't hear him. 2) I ended up turning off ALL voices (set volume to 0) and just tuned on sub titles. I just went back to reading quest dialog. Seems like a waste since they spend so much time and money on voice stuff but seriously, I can't take that droid any more. lol Maybe if I could put him somewhere else in the ship or something. He's the ONLY one that talks every time you get near him and he's in the path between the door and the cockpit so you're forced to approach him.
  4. I don't read the forums much, but I gotta ask. Am I the only person that want's to space C2-N2? He never shuts up. Every time I enter or exit a ship I have to listen too him. Travel sucks bad enough having to instance a half dozen times to go from one planet to another, he makes the process a hundred times worse. Reminds me of the Governor of Taris blabbing every time I pass through the freak'n space port.
  5. Most games do include some sort of system that allows this, and they all cause problems because of it. If you MUST include PvP on a PvE server then it should only be allowed in designated areas. And I don't mean open world areas, I mean instanced areas like war zones. Many will not agree with that, but that's because they started a character on the wrong server type. If you want to PvP then by all means leave the PvE server. If you want to PvP on a PvE server YOU should have to change YOUR play style because you are on the WRONG SERVER.
  6. If your CPU is over-heating then your have inadequate cooling. Sometimes, even if everything looks like it's working fine under the right conditions a failure will arise. (This response is not entirely directed to the person I quoted, it's mostly a response to this thread) The primary machine I play the game on is a X58 Chipset i7 930 with a GTX 460. It's not over-clocked and certainly not "Top of the line". When I first built this machine it seemed to work perfectly with one exception. When working in 3D Modeling software it would BSOD. I did basic memory tests (Windows Memory Tester/memtest86) for days. Did tests of the drives, on and on. Everything I tried led me to believe the 3D software was at fault. Then I decided to run Prime95 which stresses the CPU and RAM. The test didn't run 60 seconds before it crashed with memory errors. I replace the RAM and everything has run perfect since, including this game. I'm not saying the game client is without error, certainly it isn't. My point is when problems like total system crashes/BSOD happen your first step should be to confirm that your system is working correctly. Just because one game or piece of software runs it doesn't mean all of them will. Some software puts more stress on the system than others. For example TOR is going to stress the system more than WoW because it's designed for newer hardware and it will push it harder. As a long time PC Tech I've run into a number of times when a PC seems to work fine, but once you put put some serious stress on it things go down hill quickly. Again, I'm not saying the client software is flawless, I'm not saying anyone's hardware is "crap" or anything like that. But when anyone experiences problems with computer crashes I would suggest things like; Make sure your cooling is working. Clean out dust, ensure the fans are spinning correctly. Ensure your drivers are current, in the case of video drivers sometimes this isn't the best thing but you can check the forums of the video chipset company to help figure out which version is best. Stress your machine to confirm everything is working, try things like Prime95, run BOINC maybe. Try things like HDTune, stress the HD's out as well. Put it through the paces and make certain it's not your system. Then, by all means contact Bioware and raise heck.
  7. I had this happen during beta and several times on live, it took a while but I did figure out what was causing it and how to fix it. At least for the issue I'm having. I have an MS mouse (not sure it makes a difference), my 5th mouse button is my push-to-talk button for mumble. I've noticed that if I press the 5th button while the cursor is hovered over things like the ability bar at the bottom of the screen the mouse seems to die in TOR. When this happens, if I move my mouse cursor back to the bar and tap the 5th button it starts working again. I checked and button 5 is not assigned to any task by default, this may be what is confusing the game. Not sure if this relates to the problems you all are having, but try it.
  8. I think most people are missing a very key thing here. This is not a standard MMO(RPG) that you are used too seeing. This is a Bioware MMO, Bioware makes story driven games. This is a story driven MMO, not an uber-gear stay up all night on red bull raiding game. The story is #1 here, especially at this point in the game. The majority of time went into making eight primary story lines that can be impacted some by the choices that you make. Powering through quests racing for the end game will get you nowhere in a fresh MMO, especially this one. Grouping IS optional through much of the game I've played so far (level 30 at the moment) but grouping makes the game more fun. I personally have skipped much of the heroic quests when I was going through the story and I go back and do them with guild mates. Sure, I get less XP that way but they are still fun. But the bottom line is, it's a new game. You can't make everyone happy no matter what, and you certainly cannot do it five days after launch. End game content will be expanded. More quests, likely group based, will be added as time goes on. If you aren't enjoying the story of the game, maybe this isn't the game for you. Considering I don't usually even read quests in other games, that's pretty odd for me to say. But I personally have enjoyed TOR so far and look forward to what they will add later down the road.
  9. I'm betting on a "Go back to WoW" or a "Bioware is doing you a favor" post will follow soon as they always seem to around here.. An early launch is usually sorta like beta testing, things are still getting ironed out. In exchange for early access we get queues so hopefully they'll get things worked out by the time the office launch hits. The 20th will bring a lot more people, but _hopefully_ by then they'll have things running more smoothly... If not I'm soooo quitting.. j/k
  10. I ordered late as well (I refused to purchase a game with no release date or subscription price listed) so I like others had to resort to Wal-Mart. As of now the status is Shipped via Fedex, left Albany NY at 3:17 PM and is scheduled for delivery December 21st. So it seems they are getting some orders shipped out actually.
  11. I didn't get to play today, but then I refused to pre-order a game without a release date and a pricing structure, so I waited till October. Which means I may get in by the 15th, I still find today a little disappointing though. I think they could have communicated better and structured the early access launch better. Many people do not agree with that, but hey opinions are like that. My opinion is they could have communicated better, others opinions are they things ran perfectly. To each their own..
  12. I'm thinking about just using a random password generator, sure you end up with a name like "xUHmYf8xaJAT" and everyone will think you're a gold seller, but at least nobody will ever bother you with a bunch of tells.
  13. Funny, looked as though they went home after lunch today. Nothing like knocking off at 2pm for a beer. Seriously though, I thank Bioware for their hard work. I do wish though that their community relations were better and that they should be providing more information to their customers during this time. I didn't expect to play today, but I did expect some information about when I might be able to play, something more than "Most likely before the 19th". Hope tomorrow runs smoother...
