From what I've observed, later companions give more affection, most likely so you can "catch them up". -

I don't mind the ship droids, on the ship. I wish you could take them as a healer companion without being driven methodically insane.

It's pretty common for ships in the Star Wars universe to have active fire control systems, so that's a reasonable assumption.
